Pak to counter India by inducting 500 BVR missiles

In a knee jerk reaction to India's induction of the Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) into its air defence arsenal, Pakistan has now decided to go ahead with the acquisition of inducting 500 American Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles from the United States till it gets its own AWACS. Pakistan's airforce chief today (May 28) said that Islamabad is looking to acquire the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range missiles.

These missiles known as the Slammer missiles have the capability to shoot down any target in the sky without any guidance from the ground. Pakistan air chief also said that Islamabad would acquire more F-16s from the US in a bid to negate India's air superiority with the induction of the AWACS. What would worry India the most is that these AIM-120 Slammer missiles can be launched from either Pakistani F-16s or from Humvees stationed on the ground.

The United States of America sold 500 AIM-120C5 missiles to Pakistan under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The US Air Force awarded the procurement contract valued at $269 million to Raytheon on November 17, 2006.

Pakistan has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance to procure 500 AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 200 AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missiles from Raytheon. According to a Jan. 15 Raytheon press release, this is the first AMRAAM missile procurement between Raytheon and Pakistan.

“The combined $284 million procurement augments Pakistan’s established inventory and will provide the bulk of the air-to-air fire power of the Pakistan Air Force,” said the release. “This is the largest single purchase of AMRAAM missiles in the history of the AMRAAM international program,” said Brock McCaman, vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems’ Air-to-Air product line.

Delivery is expected to start in 2008 and continue until 2011.

In June, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced a wide range of Pakistani sales under the Foreign Military Sales program, including $1.3 billion for 60 F-16 Mid-Life Update Modification Kits and Falcon Star Structural Service Life Enhancement Kits; $151 million for modifications to 14 F100-PW-220E engines for F-16s; and a $650 million sale of AMRAAMs, AIM-9s and 500 Joint Direct Attack Munitions.

What an ***..What does BVR missiles have to do with AWACS?Also AWACS were recieved few days ago not in 2006 and this order was placed well before 2008 (in 2005 along with Block52)

Just read care fully. It is mentioned in future weapons. PAF is not using AIM-120. It has PL-12 also known as SD-1 chinese made BVR missile only.
