The German U-214 is a big hit with Portugal, Greece and south korea which are all building the U214/U212 subs at their own shipyards under TOT from HDW . The diving depth is 400 meters and they are equipped with the fuel cell AIP. Buying 4 to 6 if these subs would give PN quite a punch. The only problem is ..that HDW is part owned by a US firm and may not be willing to transfer sensitive technology to Pakistan like France might do.

The irony will be that india and Pakistan will both have French and German subs in their arsenal.

Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems Delivers Third Fuel Cell Submarine

HAMBURG, Germany --- Today, the third fuel cell propelled submarine U-33 was delivered to the German Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel.

It is the third out of a series of four Class 212A submarines for the German Navy built by HDW in Kiel and Nordseewerke in Emden.

The new submarine class 212A is characterised by an air-independent propulsion system using the hydrogen fuel cell. The fuel cell plant, which produces electrical energy from oxygen and hydrogen, allows the submarine to cruise under water for weeks without surfacing, whereas submarines powered by the traditional diesel-electric engine have to reload their batteries on surface every two days.

In addition, the fuel cell makes no noise and produces no give-away exhaust heat. Together with the extremely favourable signatures and the boat's detection and weapon systems, the fuel cell plant makes the submarine virtually undetectable.

U-33 was christened at HDW in 2004 on September 13th. The commissioning will take place in June 2006. The first boats – U-31 and U-32 – have been delivered in September 2005 and officially commissioned at the German submarine base in Eckernförde in October 2005.

The delivery of the last boat, U-34, is scheduled for the end of this year.

Germany in talks with Pakistan over sale of three submarines​

Berlin, April 21, IRNA

A German defense consortium is involved in talks with the Pakistani navy over the construction of three conventional submarines, the Berlin-based Neues Deutschland cited Friday a confidential document of the German Finance Ministry.

The German government is ready to vouch for the submarine deal with one billion euros.

The planned project is viewed as controversial among politicians in Berlin since the German constitution bars the sale of military equipment in crisis regions.

News reports said earlier that French and German defense firms are vying to sell Pakistan at least three new submarines, in a contract that could be worth up to 1.5 billion US dollars.

Islamabad is reported interested in acquiring the three new advanced versions of conventional submarines in a bid to increase its naval capabilities to meet any challenges from the rapidly expanding Indian navy, military experts say.

Pakistan and Germany have deepened military and security ties over the past years.

Germany has become the fourth country after the United States, Japan and Russia to begin a strategic dialogue with Pakistan.

There are regular political-military talks with Pakistan army officials on security and military issues which include counter- terrorism and training of Pakistani officers in Germany.

Pakistani officers have received military training and education trained in Germany in recent years as part of military education and training programs.

A 3,100-strong German force is part of the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in neighboring Afghanistan.
