Pak Parliament Decides Today! Troops Or No Troops For SA

A joint sitting of the two houses of parliament will begin today. The only talking point is a crucial foreign policy decision: should Pakistan join the Saudi-led

military coalition to quell the Houthis rebellion against President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in Yemen?

Major opposition groups, including the PPP and PTI, are quite vocal in their opposition to actively jumping into the Yemen fray. Instead they want Pakistan to play peace broker in the Arabian Peninsula. Other smaller opposition parties share their views.

Cognizant of the opposition’s concerns, the government summoned the joint session of parliament after a flurry of civil-military huddles over the past few days to devise a strategy on the conflict. The Saudis are pushing Pakistan to militarily join the fight against Houthi rebels who took control of large swathes of territory in the war-torn country.

Initially, Pakistan had indicated its willingness to join the Saudi-led military coalition of Gulf States but decided to refer the matter to the parliament since it carries huge implications.

On March 26, the country’s top civil and military leadership dropped a broad hint that Pakistan might join the alliance. In a statement the civil and military leadership concluded that “any threat to Saudi Arabia would evoke a strong response from Pakistan”. But three days later another high-level huddle decided to launch a diplomatic offensive to resolve the crisis politically instead of committing troops for the Yemen mission.

The change of heart is attributed to the fact that the government’s earlier move to join the Saudi alliance had put hundreds of Pakistanis, who were at that time stranded in Yemen, at a greater risk.

Background interviews with officials familiar with the consultations told The Express Tribune that the Foreign Office advised the government to pursue a ‘cautious approach’ instead of becoming a party to the Yemen conflict.

One official, who asked to remain anonymous, disclosed that the foreign ministry was opposed to joining the Saudi-led military alliance. The official, who was part of the regular consultations, said it was premature to conclude if troops would be sent to Yemen. However, he added that troops could be deployed inside Saudi Arabia if its territorial integrity and sovereignty came under threat.

A high-level delegation, comprising Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, PM Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz as well as senior officials of the three armed forces, traveled to Saudi Arabia last week to discuss their ‘wish-list.’ It is believed that Riyadh has sought both material and manpower from Pakistan to counter the threat posed by Houthi rebels.

Riyadh has even indicated that Pakistan is all set to join the military alliance. The image of the Saudi Defence Ministry’s briefing showing Pakistani flag along with flags of other Gulf States has given credence to reports that Islamabad might soon join the alliance.
Troops or no troops for Saudis: parliament decides today - The Express Tribune

As MQM and PTI are opposing it from day one let's see what ruling party decide as they have enough majority in NA to pass any bill.
Sheikh Rashid said the truth today He said if some one think that this parliament will decide weather Troops will go or not are fools. Its Army Chief and Corps Commander who will decide and I agree

Pakistan is definitely walking on the thin tight rope.
Most likely there will be ground troops in KSA but no combat role in Yemen.
I agree but I think Air Force would take part in Yemen

We should not become party to dispute.

The rebels in Yemen are willing to talk. So the attack on them does not deserve backing.

First of all we should determine what Saudis are fighting for? I m not still clear on this. One thing I m quite clear is that this is not a sectarian war. Yemenis have been asking for their rights.

One thing is clear Nawaz never go against Army decision, if Army have to decide then better lock up NA and senate hall, seal it. Let's see what come out.

never seen before, people asking for rights with heavy weapons

Pakistan didn't organize a joint sitting of the parliament (or the GHQ) to debate whether it should be taking Saudi money and cheap oil - which it has been taking for decades now. In essence, they stood by you in your time of need, when you didn't have the money to pay for oil or other imports and your economy was in the dumps. It will be dishonourable to refuse when the Saudis now call upon your help. It will also send a message about Pakistan's reliability as an ally to other donors such as the US and China. I am sure your leaders/generals are intelligent enough to understand that and will make sure that such a situation doesn't arise.

The best solution would have been to not get involved at all in fights between Saudi Arabia and Iran, but that option was forfeited the moment your leadership chose its sides, by accepting money from one of the parties. Pakistan can choose the option to not get involved - but it needs to steel its spine and stand up on its own and not rely on aid from foreign donors any longer. Is there the courage and far-sightedness to do that? I hope there is.

On another note, it is disgusting to see how less regard some Pakistanis on this forum have for their own army. They are placing bids of 20 billion dollars, 40 billion dollars, 72 fighter planes etc - as if the army is some kind of a harlot to sell her favours to the highest bidder and these guys were the pimps. Please show some respect to your men in uniform. They are the reason you can sleep safe at night without fearing terrorists and suicide bombers.

In todays "law of jungle" world, no country can survive on its own especially a country like Pakistan whose economy sucks, is heavily indebted and is already on a hit list of many military powers. The only way to survive in such an environment is to form very strong alliance with countries with similar values and interests. KSA is not only a natural ally of Pakistan, it is one of the most reliable friend of Pakistan and it has proven that time and time again by financially helping us in difficult times, supporting our views in all international forums and using it's influence whenever and wherever necessary.

All these toilet seat politicians on this forum who are fouling the air with their ignorant brain farts are totally clueless, and biased by their religious beliefs.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have always been, are and will always be strong friends and allies. Pakistan must support and help them in their time of need without any hesitation or greed.

If we turn our back on our friends in their difficult times, then there would be no one to stand beside us in our difficult times.

I'm sure the Arabs can deal with a bunch of rebels on their own. Do NOT send troops.

It seems just like USA they also don't want their soldiers blood spilled. They want others to die for them.

What a joke Khuwaja Asif told today in joint session that KSA want air crafts and ships to support their operations, how the hell PAF can do better then Saudi Air Force which have the most advance 4++ jets in the world, while 70% PAF is vintage air force in terms of jets. Same for PN they only have 4 F-22Ps which are fully operational other then those all other ships are not fully operational.
