WASHINGTON: The United States said on Tuesday that a gas pipeline project Pakistan was negotiating with Iran could violate US restrictions on major financial deals with Tehran and Washington was already discussing this issue with Islamabad

At a briefing at the State Department, spokesperson Victoria Nuland also said that a bill President Barack Obama signed into law on Saturday would not lead to an automatic suspension of US aid to Pakistan.

At a Dec 27 public rally in Larkana, President Asif Ali Zardari had said that Pakistan would go ahead with the gas pipeline agreement with Iran despite US reservations.

But the law President Obama signed on Saturday forbids dealing with central Iranian banks. Experts say that this restriction could make it difficult for Pakistan to implement the project.

When the question was raised at the State Department briefing, Ms Nuland said it was a cause of concern for the US as well.

“We’ve made absolutely clear over many months now our concern about this deal and we will continue to talk to Pakistan about it. Were it to go forward, how it might be impacted — again, this is the kind of conversation that we have to have with Pakistan and that we’re starting to have now,” she said.

Also, Ms Nuland indirectly confirmed a recent statement by a Pakistani official that Pakistan had not received anything from the coalition support fund since June 2010 and only $400 million from the Kerry-Lugar-Berman bill were received during 2011.

“You do know that some of the money on the military-to-military side, it was difficult to spend because some of those programmes had been suspended and because of the state of the relationship in counter-terrorism cooperation,” she said.

When a reporter reminded her that new congressional restrictions — included in the law President Obama signed during the weekend — could also adversely affect the US-Pakistan relationship, Ms Nuland said: “These are certification requirements in the bill. So obviously, we’re going to have to certify that cooperation is going well in order to release money. So it’s essentially a continuation of some of the issues that we’ve had before.”

Good. Let USA cancel the aid for Pakistan too. Aid only hurts Pakistan.

Besides, why does USA care about the pipeline? It's not hurting them..

"Could violate" even US isn't clear on their position. If Iran did an oil pipeline with Tajikistan the oil pipeline 'does violate sanctions', Iranian pipeline with Pakistan 'could violate'. Glad to see even the US show a little even just a little humbleness in an odd way.

Yes, Pakistan will decide whether its in violation or not. Besides Pakistan is pursuing its energy need.

Agreed, we should go ahead with this pipeline.. We are on a shortage of energy especially when it comes to gas..

The U.S. is also interfering with China and India and thier energy needs.

I wonder why we should care what bill the US passes....should we give a damn, I guess NOT!

I absolutely agree.. we shouldn't care what the U.S. says when it deals with our energy needs.. Im just worried Zardari might actually listen to the U.S. Hence.. the memo gate scandal.

this deal will not go through.....without serious repurcussion on pak economy...remember its US which controls WB and iMF and not china..

Absolutely, as long as the parties are all willing to go through with it.

Deals coming in from Iran and China would make Pakistan richer than what America is realistically capable of giving. America cutting aids would do Pakistan good for the long term. Besides, the money doesn't go to the people, it will just end up in the wrong pockets.

If you proved you cannot be responsible with charity, what make you think you could convince people that you will be responsible with profits?

Assuming that projects like this would generate thousands of jobs alone makes it more convincing than accepting foreign aids.
More specifically, would you rather not have the fishing pole, baits and someone to teach you how to fish? I am guessing you are happy to sit there waiting for the fish to come instead? :azn:

Looky here, just examine the histories of dictatorships, those that received aid (charity) and those that successfully exploited their own natural resources. The latter was no more successful at removing corruption than the former. So by all means, learn how to fish, but do not attempt to deceive the people that you will give them a larger portion of the catch when you proved otherwise.
