What's new

PAK have failed to qualify for the Olympics for the 1st time in their hockey history

What budget? The poor guys didn't have money for residence in Belgium. Shame on Pakistani govt. For this situation. Atleast I am still proud of our team who drew against India in this situation.

Yea since Pakistani players are more talented than Indians. Funds, Pakistan needs funds.

Not surprising at all. The malaise affecting hockey is also eating away at various other sports and non-athletic fields. Every sport in Pakistan has survived on the basis of luck, with talented athletes being spotted over the years and thrown into national teams and the success of those teams often based on the individual brilliance of some team members. That 'process' (lack of a process really) was only going to succeed for a limited time.

With most of the world now focused on a disciplined and scientific approach to team and individual sports, 'raw talent' alone won't cut it. In cricket Pakistan have always been an 'unpredictable team' because they rely on individual talent and brilliance rather than a structured scientific approach. That's why, historically, Pakistan's success has been largely on the back of her bowling attack covering up for team flaws. With the modern scientific approach to analyzing players, I doubt even Wasim & Waqar would be as successful today as they were in their time (though they would still be world class).

Players like Fawad Alam get left out and are rarely given an extended run because they are not seen as having 'talent', while so called 'talented players' are given extended runs despite average performances on the back of one or two flashes of brilliance, and little emphasis placed on consistent domestic performances and improvement in the domestic leagues and sports structure.

Non cricket sports like hockey and football are even worse off because they don't even have the little domestic organization, funding and resources that Pakistani cricket does.

Pakistanis are fond of saying that Pakistan has been blessed with immense natural resources and talent - Without investing in quality education and infrastructure (educational, athletic, transportation, energy etc) these so called 'god given resources' mean nothing. Pakistan's nuclear program is yet another example analogous to our limited success in cricket. Pakistan diverted significant resources towards this program and a combination of luck, geo-politics, perseverance and ingenuity got us to where we are. The world has moved on and the global dynamics that allowed the Pakistani nuclear program to succeed are no longer in play. Without massive investments in our education and university R&D to produce quality output, Pakistan is very unlikely to make any significant advances in science and technology, including the nuclear and missile programs.

There are no quick fixes here - even if reforms are initiated today, barring luck and a few flashes of brilliance, Pakistan needs to be prepared for a decade or two of mediocrity and failure, assuming the necessary reforms stay on track during that time.

What a surprise...

I feel for the players who try and want to succeed. Pakistan's government does not give a damn about sports. The olympic contingent will be even smaller now.

. .
India and Pakistan need to have regular hockey matches to boost revenue
