What's new

Pak-French Nuclear Cooperation [possibly]

Also, you mentioned about China, you donot seem to be aware that China has already constructed Chashma 1 which is up and running, i think Chashma 2 is ready, and will be operational shortly if not already, and recently agreement was concluded for Chashma 3, 4, so you are wrong on that one buddy!

Go ahead construct a million Chashmas. Do you even know what the deal does? The deal enables Nuclear trade. Means assured nuclear supplies to feed your reactors till the world runs out of Uranium. All reactors you are constructing with Chinese blessing use Uranium availible within Pakistan. And so using Nuclear energy as a reliable source cannot happen since supplies are limited. Same was with India.

The article was ment to tell you how critical the NSG were of non proliferation record. There is not even a single mention of the word "Pakistan".

Well, no Goverment will ever give permission to question A Q Khan, forget about it!

There goes the deal.

sorry guys the news from french presidency is somewhat different. they have downplayed it by saying they have offered nuclear safety technology

nwmalik, if you read the thread you will come to know that this was has been discussed already, and it is clear that it is not about the safety procedures at all, as French President office, didnot reply to all media question's, and our FO spokesman, Mr. Qureshi, quoted Mr. Sarkozy as saying "President Sarkozy said, and I quote him, 'What can be done for India can be done for Pakistan as well.' This is a major development.".

Here is something more, if you missed the action: ""France has agreed to transfer civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan They have agreed that Pakistan should be treated like India," Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters after his country's president met Sarkozy."

:)

You seem hell bent on your point, you seem to have some kinda magic ball with which you can see the future, so my friend to add to your happiness, keep on thinking what you think, it will help you cool down your concerns.:cheesy:

Also don't you think million chasma's would be an abolute waste of resources, given the thinking power of Indian's i thought you would have thought about it, before writing, anyway don't you worry, we will not be doing that!

I see that the Indians of this forum have gotten a touch overexcited and are hyperventilating as usual.

No need to start getting excited people, i would wait until official confirmation from both sides because it seems there are conflicting reports.

Man! I wonder if any Pakistani cried when the Indian deal with the US went through, because I see a lot of it now. The J word is used too often, but here, it seems just about perfect, doesn't it my Indian friends?

India's quest to "dominate the region" in another area seems to be going towards a failing end, and what is their reply? "*sniff* There is no way it can happen, the world cannot allow it *sob*".

Let's see what happens next. A "US-India-style" deal between Pakistan and France would be just about the worst thing that could happen to Indian nuclear ambitions. I can't think of any other country that could possibly benefit Pakistan more than France can in this field. Anything we get out of this deal, even if it's just safety lectures, it will definitely be helpful. Let's hope the deal goes through.

France and Pakistan have agreed to co-operate on civilian nuclear power, officials said, with Islamabad calling the move a "significant development".

But there is confusion over the deal reached by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Pakistani counterpart.

Pakistani officials said Mr Sarkozy had undertaken to supply Pakistan with "civilian nuclear technology".

But the Elysee Palace said France had agreed only to co-operate in the field of "nuclear safety".

Mixed messages

Speaking to reporters after talks between Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Mr Sarkozy, Pakistan's foreign minister outlined what he called a "significant development."

"France has agreed to transfer civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan," Shah Mahmood Qureshi told reporters.

Mr Qureshi said the move was in recognition of the growing "energy crisis" in Pakistan, citing the need for nuclear power to guarantee the country's electricity supply.

But later a spokesman for the French presidency was careful to rein in expectations, saying Mr Sarkozy had "confirmed France was ready, within the framework of its international agreements, to co-operate with Pakistan in the field of nuclear safety."

"This is so the Pakistani programme can develop in the best conditions of safety and security," the French spokesman added, according to AFP news agency.

As well as a nuclear power station, Pakistan has nuclear weapons, but increasing turmoil in the country has caused concern among Western powers about its safety.

Nuclear boycott

France is in fact not in a position to begin unilaterally transferring nuclear technology to Pakistan, says correspondent Hugh Schofield in Paris.

That is because Pakistan is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is therefore the object of a boycott from other nuclear powers.

India was in a similar situation, but last year negotiated its way back into the nuclear fold.

Pakistan would like to follow suit, Hugh Schofield adds, but concerns over the stability of the government there means that any suggestion of countries like France transferring new nuclear technology are bound to be highly controversial.

The two leaders also discussed aid for civilians fleeing fighting in Pakistan's north-west.

France pledged 12m euros ($16.3m; £10.7m) in humanitarian aid, a day after Britain promised £12m.

France also reiterated its support for Pakistan's fight against the Taleban and "terrorist groups" in the region.

It was Kazakhstan who offered uranium deal which govt turned down due to budgetary constraints.

* Pakistan did not buy nuclear fuel because of budgetary constraints

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: The government refused last year to sanction the purchase of uranium from Kazakhstan citing budgetary constraints, according to a report published on the International Analyst Network website on Tuesday.

According to the unconfirmed report, negotiators from Afghanistan and Pakistan had reached an agreement on the sale of nuclear fuel from the uranium-rich Kazakhstan to Pakistan “some time around late 2008”.

France offers India style civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan

Karachi News.Net
Saturday 16th May, 2009 (ANI)

Paris, May 16 : France has offered Pakistan civilian nuclear technology similar to what India has obtained.

"France has agreed to transfer civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan. They have agreed that Pakistan should be treated like India," Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told his Pakistan counterpart Asif Ali Zardari that Islamabad should also have a have a wide-ranging deal to buy nuclear equipment like the one obtained by India, The News reported.

Qureshi said France had also agreed to provide 300 million Euros in assistance to Pakistan in addition to 12 million Euros for the thousands of people who have been displaced by the Swat military operation.

An official in the Sarkozy's office said France is concerned about the safety of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and wants Islamabad to fortify security around its nuclear establishments, but he refused to comment on the idea of an India-style nuclear deal.

"We will assure the world that we are an important and a responsible nuclear power and we can handle these matters without threatening or endangering anyone," Qureshi said.

Qureshi added that Islamabad already has a comprehensive security system in place for its nuclear arsenal, and is also willing to give guarantees to the international community.

"Pakistan has no issues with the IAEA. We are willing to give international guarantees. We want the world to feel secure, and Pakistan will give all necessary guarantees," he said.

London, May 15 (PTI) France today offered Pakistan civilian nuclear technology to meet its growing energy requirements, overlooking global concerns over Islamabad's poor non-proliferation record.
"France has agreed to transfer civilian nuclear technology to Pakistan. The two countries have agreed in principle on the move," Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said, after President Asif Ali Zardari held talks his with French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris.

The negotiations regarding the transfer of civil nuclear technology will be held in July this year and a new framework agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is likely to be signed during the visit of the French President to Pakistan in September, Qureshi was quoted as saying by APP news agency.

Pakistan had earlier requested the United States to offer a similar civil nuclear deal it had signed with India. However, Washington rebuffed Islamabad's plea citing its poor nuclear non-proliferation track record.

The US has expressed serious concern over the proliferation activities of Pakistan's disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan, who transferred sensitive technology to countries like North Korea and Iran. PTI
