Sri Lanka has received the stock of 40,000 metric tons of fertilizer from Pakistan, and the fertilizer shortage prevailed in the country will end from today, the co-cabinet spokesman, Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
The Minister said that steps have been taken to transport the stock of fertilizer from the Colombo harbor to the relevant areas within the night using 200 special trucks.
Responding to a media query on the fertilizer shortage at the cabinet briefing on Wednesday, Minister Jayasekara said the fertilizer shortage resulted from the Pakistan government’s decision to suspend the fertilizer exports. However, following a discussion between President Maithripala Sirisena nod the Pakistan Prime Minister, the Pakistan government has agreed to send the shipment of fertilizer.—INP

Urgent Fertilizer Supply

President Sirisena expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the Government of Pakistan, for the timely provision of fertilizer to Sri Lanka to curb the shortage, as had been requested by him.
In the wake of a sudden shortage of fertilizer in Sri Lanka, President Sirisena last week announced that Pakistan had agreed to send 41,000 metric tons of fertilizer immediately. The President had contacted Pakistani Prime Minister Abbasi, following concerns raised about the scarcity of fertilizer in the country and had requested assistance to find an immediate solution to the crisis.

The Government of Pakistan informed him that it would take steps to export more than 75,000 metric tons of fertilizer to Sri Lanka in the future.

Traditionally, Pakistan's fertilizer production capacity has been over 6 million tons per year, a little over the national demand.

__________

I hope they don't create shortage in Pakistan and Gov should increase the production by making new plants now that we Irani gas coming to Pakistan we can make new plants for more fertilizers.

It will create shortage in Pakistan. We may need to import for our own use. Natural gas is used to manufacture fertilizer. If I am not wrong around 25% of total gas usage is by fertilizer industry. As we are already facing shortages in winter, the share to fertilizer plants is cut.
Thats how sugar, fertilizer and other mafias worked in Pakistan. They get subsidized natural gas, sell fertilizer on very expensive rates to farmers, export at will, create shortage within country, increase price, import, make more money.
Worthless policy makers and our government, who cant even implement their own decisions. Everything is working on ad-hoc basis, no wonder why we are in current state of affairs of economy.

instead of creating power jobs and focusing on exports traditionally we have done opposite

e.g not providing gas to fertilizer and importing fertilzers
banning export of chicken and mear
banning export of cotton and than banning export of sugar and than re opening export with subsidy

these measures have led to an adhoc economy this is all happening due to populish behavior and pure corruption have resulted us to go to IMF and getting stufff corrected urgently

our econmy is mostly adhoc and reactive, another example is instead of letting rupee natural lose value as all currencies in sub continent have included indian currency we kept it high and than dropped it suddenly on IMF pressure resulting in crash of economy

bottom line, we screw up things and IMF comes and get it corrected and leaves and cycle continues, due to urgent corrections people suffer

Agri Tech plant has shut down due to lack of natural gas...and govt is offering LNG at twice the rate of previous natural gas rates..

At present they can export fertilizer because Pakistan has excess of fertilizers in stock. with Irani gas coming into country they will have more availability of Gas and they can produce more so they should built more plants.
