Last year, there was the perfect display of inequality in our society. On the day Hardee's was inaugurated in Lahore, there were people standing in line for an hour to spend Rs. 700 on a single meal and then there were people standing in line for hours to save Rs. 10 on buying sugar from Utility Stores. I saw people standing in both lines on the same day and realized the increasing duality of our society.

NEW DELHI: India today expressed "concern" over China's plans to have a rail link with Pakistan through the Karakoram ranges, but said it was doing its own preparations to counter such a move.

"It is definitely a matter of concern. But we are taking our counter measures and we are doing our own preparation," Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju told reporters here.

He was responding to a question on the Chinese plans to build the rail link to Pakistan and reach the Arabian Sea via Gilgit-Baltistan region in Pak-occupied Kashmir.

Raju said both China and Pakistan had made it "very apparent" that they were "working closely together and cooperating closely" on defence and strategic issues.

China has already built a rail line up to the Indian borders along the Tibetan plateau and now the plan is to have the rail link to Pakistan and reach the Arabian Sea.

Media reports had suggested that a Memorandum of Understanding for the rail link will be signed between Beijing and Islamabad soon.

Beijing: Kashgar — an important transit point on the ancient Silk Route and a gateway between China and Pakistan — has earned a special distinction during the ongoing visit of Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari. It has been declared a special economic zone, which is the magic formula that has catapulted several Chinese towns like Shenzhen into world class trading centers.

The move suggests that Chinese leaders are seriously considering plans to connect Pakistan with rail that would run through the difficult terrain near the Karakoram highway, which connects Khunjerab Pass with various Chinese towns including Kashgar. Indian strategic experts see the proposed railway plan as a serious military infrastructure close to the Indian border, sources said.​

Zardari on Wednesday told a group of officials from the China Northern Railways Corporation (CNR) that Pakistan was keen to build several new new lines for access to the Central Asia, West Asia and Chinese markets. He requested CNR to form a consortium with Pakistan Railways for to give shape to the plans.

The announcement makes Kashgar, in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, the sixth special economic zone in China. This will mean preferential policy support for development of new industries in the city. This will mean a growing market for Pakistani exports.

Kashgar is also known as a hotbed of Uighur separatists indulging in occasional incidents of violence to press for their demand for an independent East Turkmenistan nation. China has been seeking both intelligence and military support from Pakistan to keep the Uighur militants in check and cut off their links with pro-Taliban forces across its borders.

At present, the Chinese military is engaged in a joint anti-terrorism exercise with Pakistan forces between July 1 and 11 on the bordering province of Ningxia.The decision to make Kashgar a special economic zone shows that China will rely more heavily on Pakistani military support to keep Islamic militants outside its border while offering Pakistan with a ready market to sell its goods.

They are helping us excel in economic areas together with strengthening our defence capabilities unlike American hipocratic policies, which is not ready to open its markets for our products!!!

Obviously we are offering Chinese benefits too in shape of support in anti terrorism and link to Indian ocean for their trade etc etc.

By making it a special economic zone, how does the link between PA is made & that Pakistan will sell its goods ??

Rather the Chinese decision to make this SEZ means, they are not looking at a military solution, rather an economic one, as SEZ will bring investment in this area, from Chinese, Pakistanis as well as international investors due to its proximity to Pakistan and the way out to the ports through which export can be done more cheaply, and with rail link in place, it will be a further boost.

Thus is it more of an economic solution to the problems faced on the Chinese side rather then a military solution which complicates things further rather then solving it, and linking PA to it is absurd.

With SEZ it will have special benefits for investors, industries will be set up, infrastructure developed, people will get jobs, economic prosperity for the people, Chinese good will image will be developed and people will tend to forgo the militancy or any of such ideas.
