Pak-China $20 Billion New Investment MOU's signed during Imran Khan's visit

It would seem, during the last three years of the incompetent PTI Government, the Chinese have downgraded their financial relations to promises and goodwill only.

Whatever happened to the 15 MOUs that were signed during PM Imran Khan's inaugural visit to China in November 2018?

The fanboys made so much noise about it but nothing has materialised. Instead, incompetent PM Imran Khan has been trying to keep Chinese still interested in the CPEC even since.
And in Milton Nawaz Friedman's tenure, China moved $100 bn worth of industry into Pakistan, right.

Well duh. If you don't remember, let me remind you.

In 2015, President Xi Jinping landed in Pakistan and launched CPEC worth $46 billion with PM Nawaz Sharif.

In 2017, China decided to enhance the CPEC investment to $62 billion under PM Nawaz Sharif's leadership. It had planned to further increase it to $150 billion by 2030.

However, after August 2018, the whole project has significantly slowed down to the point that General Asim Saleem Bajwa was forced to resign in August 2021 as the head of CPEC Authority.

Despite such colossal incompetence by and under PM Imran Khan's leadership, he is still preaching all is well.

If silicon wafer fabrication starts in Pakistan, then there is no stopping on rest of industries to move into pakistan, like phone manufacturing, 5G tech, and high tech communication systems, routers, switches and many many more tech like PLCs.
With all due respect, the irony of this sub continent is that for rapid growth, nations like Pakistan with its strategic position and Indian with its Demand are natural economic partners.

The problem with fabrication is that it not only needs significant water reserves but a sustainable ecosystem to push forward growth and development. A difficult ask in a region with increasing predicted water scarcity.

A regional ecosystem is infinitely more economical than an export based international one. With how capital intensive this industry is, even if a industry with maximum possible efficiency were to be developed you would inevitably face issues with market cap.

With low HDI prevelant in the regional markets GoP could easily export such products, the number of people willing/able to buy such products would be limited, not to mention you would be competing with Chinese firms for market share. Individual businesses do not concern themselves beyond the economic realities, and dispite GoC phasing out lower end manufacturing, if a legacy business found it profitable it would compete regardless of relations.

The core technology that you need to actually produce chips, wafer-steppers / lithography equipment — is designed/produced by ASML, a spin-off of Philips, based ...

Taiwan leads the wayn China is catching up fast.

United States has the tech but not that big in manufacturing for exports, still leads in Technology it seems. With Intel and many more big tech. firms.

Pakistan doing such thing looks far fetched, but read that initially the China is setting up a training and research center in Pakistan, manufacturing will come later talking about Semicondutor or Silicon Chip industry.

Re-location of industries into Pakistan will be important. First phase was building energy plants and roads infrastructures now phase 2 will be industralization on special economic zones which have been designed only in current PTI govt. Energy plants were completely loans where as outsourcing industries are pure investments. This may create thousands of jobs as well.

Being investments and not loans would only mean that Pakistan side has less obligation to make it profitable. In another word, Pakistan prefers more benefits with less work, just like everyone else. :)

Its more complicated then that. CPEC phase 1 consisted of loans and guarantees for power plants with ridiculous returns of 18% and that to in $. Other loans were for roads. Pakistan will not see any return from these projects unless phase 2 aka investment by Chinese in SEZ's that will earn Pakistan foreign exchange or save it by import substitution.

This was always the plan but phase-2 is more difficult then giving loans with guarantees.

The capability is not in question, the economic feasibility to do so is.

Can Pakistan potentially produce cutting edge chips? Good for insulating against external pressure shocks? Definitely.

Would they be scalable, and economically efficient with the prevalent geopolitical reality? Debatable.

Stop obfuscating, you know very well I said relocation of industry. What you've listed is $62 bn worth of loans to build CPEC related infrastructure and on top of that these had nothing do so with Nawaz Sweeter than honey and taller than Himalayas Friedman, it was in the works since Musharraf's time.

This guy is a next-level choroo (youtube channel owner), beware. Never put any stock in MOUs which mostly do not materialize in Pakistan. I have not seen a detailed breakdown of SIGNED deals in the current visit from any official source.

What do you mean by choroo?...

I have watched his channel... He is always putting a positive spin on everything as if Pakistan has become the next Switzerland it something... Which is really annoying...

The first thing we need to do is document our GDP in both nominal and PPP terms. Our real economy is much larger than what we see on paper. For example our underground economy is actually larger than our current GDP. I bet many people did not know that.

Seems to me just to ensure tax collection.
