Speaking purely in terms of geo-politics, there is absolutely no reason why Bangladesh or Pakistan should be hostile nations to one another. The countries do not pose a threat to each others sovereignty. Both as Muslim majority nations stand in opposition to the rise of Hindu nationalism in India. This threat will amplify especially for Bangladesh in the coming years as New Delhi will seek to push millions of Assamese and Bengali Muslims within its borders towards Bangladesh.
Further new avenues of cooperation are emerging as Bangladesh seems to be realizing the gravity of the situation with regards to how ill-prepared its defence forces are taking into consideration the threats it faces from its neighbors as well as stamping its naval authority over its EEZ. New avenues of military cooperation will therefore emerge between our countries.
The thing which has held our relations back are of course the events of the 47-71 period. However as the generation that lived through those years dies, the emotional element will start disappearing and a new generation that is not held back by emotional baggage to the same extent can look towards establishing a win-win relationship.
