Sir, I know a lot of details but I don't want to go into details except it was acquired on full tot and it was in fact the first major project of the organisation that started with it and it was has been modified.
Acquiring any with ToT does not mean it is a walk in the park. Many ToT around the world have resulted in failure for example Agosta-90B's case. Producing the product with exacting details and hence improving it in terms of range, functionality and accuracy are not a minor feat for a small team.

Core functionality e.g. link, modes etc were not mod'ed - they remained the same - I am the author of the link work. Nothing much was changed; this remains more or less the same; just call it what you may it is relabelling of a south african product.

Why does south africa have such impressive military research. They dont even have an enemy. Or is from the colonial period?

I will take a photo of our early generation radio comms unit; i will upload it later. This is 70's technology which will beat circles on the PRC's you are using now. This one we discontinued long long time ago and we are already 4 generations ahead on that unit - just go to reutech and check - the manpacks/long range works was my last contrib at my former company before it was merged up into reutech.

South Africa has a very long track record of niche research work from the 60s; the height came after we got our nose bloodied in Angola in late 70's and during sanctions. Full blown work had commenced. We are the ones for mine proof/resistant vehicles which were then the basis for most of the world vehicles e.g. Casspir; RG series, etc etc. G5/G6s, Cheetah, Rooivalk, we can then go into SOWs, EW/ECCM/comms etc etc. Dual requirements which lead to creation of SASOL to convert coal to liquid fuels etc.

And you brought this guy to world attention and a guy on this thread was demanding to bring names and photos of the planners as well. Wow, what an Einstein of you.
I think this is going in wrong direction.
And its really fool on the behalf of PAF to give these pilots those medals. I mean, for appreciation they could have given other things like promotion, but painting the pictures of these guys on war arena, is simply like to give sopari of these pilots to enemy.

I know for a fact that Raptor is not the only weapon system from SAF that we operate.

Thanks for the details. Any links to a read up or do you mind going into depth on what the SA Angola conflict was? This is very intruiging as u dont hear of African conflicts much especially their military research.

Its ok. Once his name was rolled out in media after 14 Aug medals than there is nothing to hide about it. Getting ultra conservative in keeping secrecy in today's age is impossible. A tribute thread here is well deserved. He earned it. I am sure his relatives are already paying tribute to him on their Facebook pages especially after Aug 14.

unfortunately there is not much written up; most of us are bound by paper on that. May be 20 yrs from now. On off battles with Cubans and very long strech of Namib to go over. It was brutal; but new innovative ideas were borne e.g. HMS, secure radio comms, TR28 - world's first transistorised manpack used by rhodesia, and portugese alike across various theaters. Use of basebleed in G5s to knock out the Cubans at much longer range, Complete decaptiation of the doctrine to use tanks - in 80's and focus on long range wheeled ifvs which were mine proof and move to rooikaat; we borrowed the idea from rhodesia's bush war. entire command structure was decentralised and we had to work as hunter packs very similar - in essense blitzkrieg taken to next levels. Take what is better from the enemy - adopt it and make it better e.g. reverse engineered grad rockets which became valkryie on SAMIL. Just a few of the things i can share as open knowledge.
Probably an entire book can be written.

this is from the 70's; this was our legacy unit minus secure comms which I inherited; one with secure comm was in 1978 and was the world's first. This was alone a full decade ahead of the US equipment. We have a very long history of pioneering work in RF technologies. You can see the newer ones on reutech's site.

Thanks for the writeup. So what makes a former member of the SA military come on a Pakistan army forum lol. U have any experience working with them? And i learnt something new that Cuba had troops in Africa! Did not know they could project power like that.

Cuba at its peak had over 100,000 troops and they had diverted their top line equipment to Angola to support MPLA. They have lost countless soldiers there since the 70s'. if you go to cuba, you will find resting places for thousands of their conscripts.
That was then and now we are very good friends; in fact met a few people who were on the ohter side during my visits to cuba.

during iran-iraq war there were countless attempts to assassinate or lure our top pilot out of country with asylum and money offers, in some cases they succeeded. in one case one of our F-14s defected to iraq and after that US fighters bombed the plane in shelter to prevent it to fall in soviets hands. so my advice is do not publish your pilots information on internet.

The TOT on agosta 90b was not a failure---what the techs and engineers learnt from it cannot be taken back---maybe forgotten if info not used---.

The failure was not getting the next in line newer french submarines---.

The first hand knowledge of the build of a submarine was a massive achievement for for the pak navy---.

We did not pay anything extra for TOT---it came with the package---the only thing that is that you just cannot build your own high tech submarine just like that with one experimentation---. You really don't want to---. It would take a couple of decades of JV's to start on your project---.

For a country like pakistan---JV's are the best option for these mega projects---because they have NO CHANCE of failure---.

If you do not institutionalise the skills and knowledge, it evaporates..people forget, or retire/leave the organisation over time. I hope Navy has done something about it.

I disagree... the right approach would have been for PNS to launch its own project based on Agosta 90B's but with increasingly advanced specs through multiple JVs (where needed) for various subsystems designed according to the requirements of the project.

I totally agree with you on this. This "floating online" is a defeatist ideology. If PAF or ISPR has not released any such info, pics, etc then it is all illegal.

You just cannot build a modern submarine on your own just because you got TOT on the last three---.

Why not? If they can sell you submarine then steel can also be sold whether they give you the recipe (ToT) or not is another issue but selling the rolls of steel is not such a big issue...In fact we can get it from China. But who stopped us from experimenting and making the steel indigenously? If there's a well, there's a way.
