PAF chief to attend F-16 ceremony in Texas

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman will leave for the United States in a few days to attend the Pakistan F-16 Peace Drive I inauguration ceremony and a luncheon at the Lockheed Martin aeronautics company, the manufacturers of the state-of-the-art aircraft.

“The aircraft inauguration ceremony will be held on the company premises at Fort Worth in Texas at 10 am and will be followed by a celebration luncheon at 11:30 am on October 13,” a source told The News from the US.

According to the source, who wished anonymity, the contract for the supply of 18 new F-16C/D Block 52 aircraft was signed between the Pakistan and US governments on September 30, 2006 after a long series of negotiations.

He said the first batch of the aircraft would be delivered to Pakistan next year while the contract also includes an option for another 18 more aircraft. “In the deal, the delivery of the 26 remaining Peace Gate III/IV aircraft and the upgrade of those aircraft and the remaining F-16A/B fleet were also agreed,” the source said.

During his US visit, the PAF chief would also put his signatures on one of the aircraft manufactured for Pakistan, the source said. The Pakistani air chief would also hold meetings with senior USAF and other military officers during his stay in the United States, he added.

“With the delivery of the 18 new F-16s, Pakistan’s airpower will increase manifold. It will enable Pakistan deal effectively with the situation whenever a need arises for the use of airpower in the ongoing war on terror,” the source commented.

source of this news?

The PAF pilots on training to USA will start flying F-16s next month and they will be back in May 2010

if we really foing to have them by the end of 2010
then we should invest the money already allocated for j-10
on further buyings of another optional 18 f-16s

I don't think PAF is will order more F-16's anytime soon.Firstly if PAF wanted i would have given the order of 36 planes right away

In my opinion the following could be the reasons:

1) F-16's come with lot of strings attached.18 new F-16's cannot be stationed with our older F-16's.US officials can at anytime inspect the F-16's for any possible changes made by PAF.

2)Relations with US are always tricky. So may be PAF wanted to wait and see how things go with the initial order.
Secondly by the time final F-16 will be delieved MRCA plane would have been finalized. That shall give PAF a good idea about its future needs. If the american planes in the MRCA competition are not selected US may be willing to offer even better F-16's and associated technologies to Pakistan just for the sake of busineess, but this seems highly unlikely as F-18SH is likely to be selected as MRCA .Also things will be more clear about possible capabilities of FC-20 by 2011.If in 2011 PAF thinks that FC-20 is not going to meet the requiements of PAF,PAF may go for some other planes. An option in that case could be to order 18-36 more f-16's and may be go for some rafale's(but this would need alot $$$).

please correct me if i am wrong.

Sorry for asking a question a bit unrelated to current discussion, but i always wanted to know if the F-16s in Pakistan use PW engines or GE engines ?

Also any news of what engines PW/GE will be on the new Block50/52 F16s ?

Which one is better ?

blk 15's use PW
blk 52+ will uses GE

Found these figures:
Thrust-to-weight ratio: PW(7.8),GE(6.36)

Old News but information related Pakistan Missiles.

Pakistan is procuring 500 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles and 200 Sidewinder missiles from American defence and aerospace systems supplier Raytheon, the company said on Friday.

Pakistan has formally signed a letter of offer and acceptance with Raytheon to get 500 AIM-120 AMRAAM and 200 AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. This will be the first procurement agreement between the two.

'The combined $284 million procurement augments Pakistan's established inventory and will provide the bulk of the air-to-air fire power of the Pakistan Air Force,' the company said in a statement in Washington.

'This is the largest single purchase of AMRAAM missiles in the history of the AMRAAM international programme,' said Brock McCaman, vice-president of Raytheon Missile Systems' Air-to-Air product line.

The delivery of the missiles is expected to start in 2008 and go through until 2011.

Last June, the Pentagon announced a major package for Islamabad under the Foreign Military Sales Programme that included 60 F-16 Mid-Life Update Modification Kits and Falcon Star Structural Service Life Enhancement Kits, $151 million for modifications to 14 F100-PW-220E engines for F-16s and a USD 650 million sale of AMRAAMs, AIM-9s and 500 Joint Direct Attack Munitions.

From a military and operational point of view, it is being pointed out that the AMRAAM missiles will allow a pilot to target an enemy aircraft that are beyond their visual range in day or night, and in all weather.

The AMRAAM has an autonomous guidance capability, which allows the pilot to maneuver immediately after missile launch. This system is now in use in 32 countries, according to Raytheon.
The AIM-9M Sidewinder missile is an infrared-guided, short-range air-to-air missile and in use in more than 20 countries around the world.
