. . . . .
Last IL-78 Delivered;
the PAF's 10 Squadron has taken delivery of its fourth IL-78 Midas, serial R11-004. it was delivered in February.

.
besides helping in increasing the loiter time of our AIRFORCE fighting squadrons. i doubt the Air Refuler will be needed in times of war. The reason being our countries strategic depth is not much unless ofcourse we are keeping our fighting squadron based in quetta & wish to attack delhi from there.

nonetheless in times of peace it can easily help deter any midadventure from the enemy by providing our fighters to keep a constant airborne vigil. as well as helpp our military in strategic transport along with the C130s & the CN235

IL-78 MRTT 'Midas' by the numbers

purchase date - 2008
delivery completed - 2012
total delivered - 4
options - 2

squadron - no 10 MRTT, part of 35 CATW.

avionics - analogue based with each system having several line replaceable units. they include 2 powerful radars, one ground mapping radar - range 250 miles (400km) - ILS - ADF - Doppler navigation system - AFCS - DME/VOR - GPWS - TCAS etc. a GPS system is being installed to augment the INS.

crew - 5 pilot, co-pilot, flt-engg, radio-op, and navigator.

refuelling capacity - 3 aircraft at a time.
pods - UPAZ - IM , hose and drogue hoses. PAF calls it 'probe & basket'.

empty weight of 100 tons (100,000kg) and carries a tranferable load, whether fuel or cargo of up to 90 tons (90,000kg) - three times as much cargo as a C-130.

MTOW - 190 tons (190,000 kg)

powerplants - 4 Aviadvigatel - D-30 KP, two-shaft, low bypass ratio turbo jets. 118kN each.
speed - Mach 0.8 (528mph) but Mach 0.6 (396mph) is more usual.

auxilary power unit - 4 60 KVA generators, 4 heavy duty batteries capable of running the avionics load for up to 30 minutes.

upgrades required - first, the most expensive, but also the best, would be to install a serial digital data bus incorporated with a new state-of-the-art glass cockpit. it would extend the life of the airframe.

radar warning receiver or self-protection jammer is a serious deficiency. if the aircraft is to be used anywhere near a war zone, this shortcoming will need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

if the modifications to engines (too noisy), avionics and self-protection suite are made it will be a great asset to the PAF.

No money to upgrade these birds.
