I believe when war started out Japan & US was on an equal standing, but \after Pearl Harbour US cranked up their industrial base and then there was no equality. As Admiral Yamamoto correctly said that 'We have woken up a sleeping giant'.
Imperial Japan does have a superior navy in quality in the beginning, but while they got outmuscled since the quantity of the industrial output does matter at that time.
China's industrial output is far above to that of Imperial Japan, while militarily we are only second after USA, but Imperial Japan is not the second most powerful nation at that time.
While our nuclear arsenal can vaporize any nation on Earth, do you truly think the USA would venture their existence to fight against China?
