P75I Submarine Program delayed again for 9 months

Amid the falling number of conventional diesel electric submarines in its fleet, Indian Navy is facing another delay in the much awaited Project 75I SSK project for 6 more submarines.

This project has been given an extention of another 09 months this time. This is the 3rd extension given to this tender. The 1st extended the response deadline to April 2022. The 2nd extension was for 6 months. And the 3rd extension for another nine months has been given just a couple of days back.

The new deadline to submit their responses is August 2023. 5 foreign OEMs were approached for Technology Transfer, but 3 have already backed out including France, Russia and Sweden.

Only Germany and South Korea remain in the competition. But Germany is hinting its reservations on ToT and other Indian demands and can also pull out, leaving the competition a single bidder event.

MoD and IN had given several relaxations to ease the concerns of the OEMs. But the demand of a proven in service AIP system is turning out to be a sore point. France has a working next generation AIP technology, more advanced than DRDO AIP, but France has an all Nuclear Powered submarine fleet, meaning it doesn’t have an operational AIP.

The Indian Navy is left with just 15 SSKs today while Pakistan has 8 new SSKs under construction and Bangaladesh is looking to acquire more Chinese SSKs. Chinese SSNs are also becoming more regular in IOR.


This is bad considering preparations will start for 2024 elections by August 2023. This means nothing will be signed. Most probably when the new government is formed, then a new tender will need to be issued.

And why does a superpower need foreign ToT from a non-superpower like South Korea to build subs?

It would be a legit question....

BTW - Korean Sub Tech is just re-hashed warmed over German sub tech.... AFAIK.

So Germany's participation was redundant anyways. Plus their involvement was going to be expensive in any case, especially compared to Korean involvement.

News is south Korean subs will be developing these SK subs are based on U 214 subs

Germany is carrying out a major reevaluation of its foreign policy. The govt has intimated it is going to downgrade its relationship with China and is now seeking suitable countries it can deepen relationships with to counter China.
It is falling in line with the Western conclusion that China's autocracy is a systemic threat to all democracies.
It was believed by the West that if China was opened up to world trade then democracy would eventually follow.
What in fact has happened is that China has used the trade and technology to deepen the autocratic and expansionist rule.
Britain is revaluating as is Germany and the rest of Europe and rightly or wrongly want India on its side of the expanding and clearly defining divide.

Was nothing learnt from the Arihant?
Technically there should be enough knowledge base available to simply say - F it! and get the design parameters for the Lada - speak to the SK guys to provide electronics and just make that the P75I.
Otherwise it is the Tejas all over again

It is based on Russian double hull design with a sealed nuclear reactor section. Except for the latest French nuclear submarines that have a hatch above the reactor for quicker refuelling, no other country with nuclear submarines have such a system.
To refuel, the hull will have to be cut open and welded back. It is not possible for sea water to enter the submarine, and certainly not via a non-existent hatch
