Oz Defence Minister welcomes Karzais tough new approach towards Pakistan
Sydney, Oct 6(ANI): Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith has welcomed a tough new approach by Afghan President Hamid Karzai towards Pakistan and the Taliban, according to a news report.
Karzai had recently accused Pakistan of double-dealing and supporting Taliban terrorism in his country, and declared that his government would now seek a peace dialogue directly with Islamabad rather than with the Taliban.
Karzais comments came on the eve of a visit to India, and were seen as a sign of his frustration and determination to increase pressure on the Pakistan Government.
With the signing of a strategic pact between Karzai and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the focus has shifted to what role India can play in Afghanistan in the days to come.
The Afghan presidents new approach was angrily described by officials in Islamabad as an unfair attempt to blame Pakistan and its secret services for problems within Afghanistan.
Smith, however, said he did not believe that Karzais new approach was a bid to blame Pakistan for the ongoing violence in Afghanistan.
That is not how I read what he said, The Australian quoted the Australian Defence Minister, as saying.
After a brief visit to Australian military bases in Afghanistan, Smith said in London that he could understand the new Afghan approach after a Taliban fighter masquerading as a peace negotiator used a hidden bomb to kill Karzais most senior peace negotiator, Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Theres no point in beating around the bush: the attack which took the life of former president Rabbani was a very serious blow and a setback to the very early stages of political reconciliation or rapprochement, Smith said.
(It is) no surprise that President Karzai would say that hes now going to pursue a conversation with Pakistan rather than a conversation with the Taliban in the face of the assassination of former president Rabbani, he added.
Smith said he welcomes Karzais indication that he wants to have a conversation with Pakistan.
There cant be a successful resolution in Afghanistan without having a political settlement as well as a military or a combat or a security settlement and that settlement has got to be supported by countries in the region, including Pakistan, he stated. (ANI)
