Mumbai: Following a much anticipated announcement by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan earlier today, top officials of all three arms of the Indian armed forces held a tri-service press conference today to address recent developments concerning wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman of the Indian Air Force (IAF) who was captured by security forces in Pakistan after his MiG 21 Bison jet was shot down on Pakistani soil. Addressing the National Assembly of Pakistan, PM Imran Khan said that the IAF pilot will be returned to India on Friday.
In an exclusive conversation with Mirror Now, Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Anil Y Tipnis said that incursion of Indian airspace by as many as 24 Pakistan Air Force (PAF) aircraft including F16s can be termed as an attempted attack on military installations. Early detection and response by the IAF foiled the attempt and must be lauded, he added.

(Retd.) Air Chief Marshal IAF, Anil Yashwant Tipnis: We’ve evidence that F16s were operating, but Pakistan denied its use because they don’t want to admit that an aircraft that a generation and half behind the F16, bettered it

The now-retired Air Chief Marshal also said that the difference between the IAF and their Pakistani counterpart can be witnessed by the fact the MiG 21 Bison, flown by wing commander Abhinandan, was much inferior in technology to the F16 he managed to shoot down. The incursion was "Pakistan's knee-jerk reaction" to the strike in Balakot, said Tipnis adding that Pakistan wants a hegemony in South Asia which could be the driving force behind its actions.

Statements made by the retired Air Marshal corroborate claims made during the tri-level press conference where Air Vice Marshal RGK Kapoor said that Indian security forces have recovered the debris of an air-to-air medium-range missile called AMRAAM which is only fitted in F16 aircraft. The evidence of F16s used in the incursion shatter claims made by the Pakistan government concerning the use of F16 aircraft in the incursion into Indian airspace.
