It's not that easy in this day and age. If anything happens to IK, the current leadership can forget about going into retirement in peace because a significant majority in the country will not be in a forgiving mood.
The Army can certainly influence jailing him on various charges akin to NS et-al in the past, but there is a difference in PTI base vs. PML and also the times we live in today. What could never be said, investigated, dug up is being done now and it is next to impossible for this to get buried.
My sincere hope is that a little wisdom finds its way into the minds of the establishment. I have no hope for peace and reconciliation from PDM because their entire leadership is in the fight for its survival (both political and literal). If they lose this one, there is no return for them and that is why they will cajole, instigate, threaten, blackmail whomsoever they need to survive. The establishment just needs a veneer of political cover so bed fellows of convenience is what we have here.
While I was never a member of PTI or any other political party, my sympathies are with the former and although cliched, the following adage comes to mind for the PTI:
"What doesn't kill you, will only make you stronger".
So tough times ahead, but if the core of the party can weather the storm, they can rise up again. Whatever the establishment is doing will come back to haunt Pakistan unfortunately and of it nothing is more alarming than the disunity in the country.
