Orions not to be replaced anytime soon: Public Accounts Committee

ISLAMABAD: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly informed on Tuesday that it was not possible to immediately replace the destroyed P3C Orion aircrafts in Pakistan’s naval fleet.

MNA Zahid Hamid presided over the the meeting of the PAC, held at the parliament house in Islamabad today.

Secretary Defence Production Lieutenant General Shahid Iqbal told the committee that no proposal for the purchase of new ‘radar aircraft’ was received adding that it will be difficult to procure new planes considering Pakistan’s fragile relations with the US.

Earlier in May, terrorists had destroyed two P3C Orion planes parked in the PNS Mehran Base in Karachi in one of Pakistan’s deadliest terrorist attacks on a military installation.

Earlier last week the Pakistan Navy moved its main battleships away from Karachi, to another port in Ormara, Balochistan, as security threats continued, sources in the navy said.

The navy had sent its warships away from its main base in Karachi as a “precautionary measure” after a 16-hour siege of its main naval airbase, PNS Mehran. The commando-style gun and rocket-propelled grenade attacks had resulted in the destruction of two P3C Orion airplanes – which were key naval assets.

.
good stuff...buy similar aircrafts from Turkey.

. . .
there was some talk of ''leasing'' 2 of them

but quite frankly, just bite the bullet.....it was some loss, but not total loss to Navy Aviation. They can still make do with the remaining aicrafts until an alternative is evaluated and approved.

.
Sure, Navy will move on but the loss was a huge one. That day at PNS Mehran was a real bad one...

Hope we get our outstanding 14 F-16 AM/BMs though, those are much more essential.

.
What are the other options?, what does China or Turkey have to offer?

.
we are still to receive some remaining in the original deal ....they will cover some gap..

lets really hope we do get the 14 remaining f-16s soon

Obviously how can they? Either they pay for corruption or the well being of the country. In this case its the former. As for the navy.....you cant protect your vital assets in peace time, what can we expect in a war time situation. If i am not wrong the current monitoring capability of the PN has been reduced to 30%. Good going. Taraqi karin ga hum.

There are some gross errors in your post. It is actually more difficult to protect your assets when you are facing an Armed Insurgency as opposed to when you are fighting a full-scale war against an external enemy. These militants had good knowledge of the base, possibly had inside help and were most likely living within 3-5 kilometres of the base(explaining how they could move with weapons). In the event of India attacking however, things will be entirely different. Insurgents use local populace as cover. India won't be able to do that.
I hope I make myself clear.

Gross errors?there maybe, fact is PN lost its vital assets in peace time situation......Yes?.Insurgency problem in Pakistan is not new, we are facing it for quite some time now, yet PN failed to protect its vital assets despite having intelligence of a possibility of a attack. Having inside help is even more disturbing because if terrorists can have inside help, then India can too.
So no matter how you try to color the whole scenario, fact is PN failed to protect its vital assets. Whether India can achieve that or not is debatable but the fact i am stressing on is if it can happen in peace time situation, God knows what will in war time. There is a gross negligence on part of PN and should not be covered up. Hope i have cleared myself.
