NEW DELHI: Opposition members in Rajya Sabha on Thursday sought a ban on a purported ayurveda product by yoga guru Ramdev's Divya Pharmacy that promises a male child.

Calling the product illegal and unconstitutional, the opposition members sought stringent action against the manufacturers.

When the House met for the day,KC Tyagi of JD(U) showed a packet called 'Putrajeevak Beej', which he claimed to have bought from Divya Pharmacy that promised the delivery of a male child.

He also displayed a copy of the purchase receipt dated April 14 and said sale of such products by "the brand ambassador of Haryana" was illegal and unconstitutional.

Without naming the yoga guru, he asked "if the government of India under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi approves of this."

Amid protests from treasury benches, Jaya Bachchan (SP) took the packet and gave it to health minister JP Nadda.

Several opposition members joined in condemning sale of such products and demanded action.

Deputy chairman PJ Kurien said s*x selection by a medicine or even pre-natal s*x determination was against the law and the Constitution, but the Chair cannot do anything about it.

With opposition members pressing for stringent action, Nadda said the issue is related to the department of aayush. "The Government will look into it and proper action will be taken."

Nadda said the issue was very serious and he has just been given a packet of the product.

"Government is very serious on s*x-ratio," he said, adding that the Prime Minister was personally monitoring the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' campaign.

This did not satisfy the members with Tyagi pulling out more packets, which inquisitive members took turns to look at.

What you may be experiencing is a placebo effect. Could you please post scientific test results of his medicines?

Yeah I am losing weight because of placebo affect. Also controlling my sugar levels. This is brilliant analysis by you.

A couple of years ago my doctor, an MD, prescribed for me an ayurvedic medicine called Rumalaya Forte for intense sacral nerve pain. I was fearing I would be bed ridden for the rest of my life. This tablet was godsend. No side effects and I stopped taking the medicines after a few months because the pain was gone.

When I read about pain killer addictions and the side effects that many many unfortunate people undergo, I can only thank Ayurveda exists.

Also if everyone healing from Ayurveda or Homeopathy are going to be dismissed as placebo effect, I do not see why cure with allopathy also is not a placebo effect.

Do not speak without any experience. I take Ramdev's medicines and it works for me.

Good for you but entirely worthless as an argument because claimed individual experiences online are hardly evidence.

On topic - this is less a case of gender selection, more a case of fraud. The claim is untenable.

Ayurveda is a recognized field of medicine by Govt of India and you are no body to seek evidence. Its criteria for efficacy may be different than that used by double blind study trials conducted by West but that is satisfactory for millions who use his medicines.

On the subject, there is no fraud because the natural herb goes by the botanical name Putranjiva Roxburghii and here it is not gender determination which is a factor but referring to child bearing qualities of this herb.

You are nobody to dismiss people's experience as hardly evidence. No one is seeking to convince you or shoving his medicines down your throat and there are millions who are convinced and swear by his medicines. Also Ayurveda is a recognized medical system by the govt of India and there is diddly squat you can do about it.

The botanical name of the herb in the medicine itself is Putranjiva Roxburghii, so I do not see what fraud he is commiting.

Are you saying you are losing weight and controlling sugar by maintaining the same lifestyle and food habits as before starting to take the medicine?

Yup. Apart from giving up my coffee which used to be 1 cup a day, I have made no other changes. Sporadically, I go for walks which I used to before too.

this ramdev fellow a few years ago was trying to convince india that his ayurvedic preparation can cure cancer.

"Government is very serious on s*x-ratio," he said, adding that the Prime Minister was personally monitoring the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' campaign.

yes, yes... the government is serious on increasing the already unnaturally high male ratio of india... there must be 900+ million males in india, the highest count for any society in history.

did modi ask his followers to abandon every religious ritual that calls for celebration of the male or makes the gods to get prasann and beam down a male child??

did modi ask his followers to abandon the stupid festivals of "bhai dooj" and "raksha bandhan" that essentially forward "honor killing" and misogyny??

For a moment, I actually thought you spoke sense.

Then I read this.

There is marriage custom in Pakistan and Afghanistan called Watta Satta literally give-take, it is a form of bride exchange where groom of a family will take a bride of another family and they must also offer bride to the groom of other family. Watta satta could involves the simultaneous marriage of a brother-sister pair from two households. So in India, if most families has sons but no daughters then there will be no marriage. These parents assume that they will get bride from another family and they don't need a daughter. This may cause homosexuality, prostitution, kidnapping and trafficking of girls, etc
