OPPO X 2021 First Rollable Phone Hands-On: The Future is NOW?

. .
From what I know, it's still in prototype phase, and will likely see a lot of changes before release. I read somewhere that the company is looking at a 2023 release.

I can see a lot of issue that this phone will suffer from. Hopefully, OPPO will address them before thinking of release.

The first big problem is the screen. In order to get the screen to be reliable, they'll need to make the screen soft and flexible, making it very easy to scratch, similar to foldables. The next problem is dirt or dust getting into the gears and motor, which could pretty much cripple the stretch function. Then you also have to worry about how many times you'll be able to use the stretch function, before the parts that make it stretch start to deteriorate.

It's a really cool concept, and I sincerely hope OPPO makes this a reality, as it could revolutionize the idea of smart phones, and pads.

Actually, this prototype is already near final production. You can see it works great with the demo. But the problem is the price. Costing USD1500 and the brand of Oppo, the company hesitate to mass produce it. Look at Huawei Mate X. The sales didnt do very well due to high cost and the hinges issue.

I agree.

I had written the below last October about a similar concept - rollable screen computers ( this pic from the film Red Planet ) :
1. They cannot be used in outdoors environment where there is dust, water, fog, oil in air ( in industrial settings ) etc. These external elements will get into the space from where the screen is being pulled out and enter the circuitry.
What is better than the above computer and this new OPPO cell phone is the upcoming Apple Glasses display and UI system. Description vid here. And about this glasses device I think they should attach the ( screen + UI ) to the phone device with a cable to avoid the constant wireless connection ( WiFi or Bluetooth ? ) buzzing near the head and also the heating through the battery.

So this OPPO roll-out screen phone device will be made obsolete.

Lol... Another pretending to be expert. This rollable is here to stay. Your shxtty glasses will not be mainstream.

The rollable invented by Chinese is not your same shxtty red planet which basically is a map roll Into scroll. It is a rollable and easy to expand smartphone screen.

The Glasses device will in time be adopted by other manufacturers because it is more natural for use ( the glasses was first brought out by Google ).

The device from Red Planet was named "map display" but it could have been used for general purpose usage as well.

Besides, the Red Planet device is a lot more good-looking than the bland OPPO device.

It is a rollable and easy to expand smartphone screen.

But the Apple Glasses will not only allow bigger viewing area and natural context specific info but also free-style input ( for sketching, note taking and idea recording ).
