PAF chief vows continued support to Army in eliminating SWA terrorists

ISLAMABAD, Oct 22 (APP): Pakistan Air Force will continue its support to Pakistan Army to eliminate terrorists in South Waziristan Agency, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman said Thursday.

Addressing the airmen during a visit to a PAF operational base actively engaged in Operation Rah e Nijat, Air Chief Marshal Qamar said, “PAF is proud of its airmen involved in discharging their duties in Operation Rah e Nejat.”

He appreciated the high state of morale and motivation of all personnel and showed his satisfaction on the results achieved by them in the operations.

He said PAF is providing photographs and imageries of the area of operations and striking the targets identified by the Army.

The Chief of Air Staff reiterated that PAF will continue to plan the operations carefully to avoid collateral damage.

He stayed with the Airmen for sometime and saw them prepare the aircraft for the missions. He also saw video clips of the attacks on the militants and appreciated their accuracy.

PA and PAF are getting immense experience in conducting joint operations. Very valuable lessons being learned along the course of this campaign. One thing for sure, "Jointness" is being taken to newer levels.

On the issue of casualties, one should be mindful that PsyOps have a part to play here in the numbers being published. When we say 200 or 400 or 1000, it can mean half or even 30%. Enemy KIA is not the measure of success here. Even killing 1000 of the 10-12000 of these folks will not make that much of an impact.

What we need to see happening is the Army denying these people space to move around, and opportunities to harbour terrorists and host them with training camps and allow their planners to sit at ease in the tribal areas.

In the near future, many more innocents will die at the hands of these calculating militants and their extremists supporters in Punjab. The assassination of Brig Moinuddin in ISB is an indication that these elements will try to hit out at softer targets as that is what the TTP leadership had asked their supporters to do when they were being kicked around in Swat (if you all recall TTP Spokesman La-Muslim Khan's intercepted phone conversation with one of his crackpot supports, he had specifically asked these bastards to go and attack the families of the officers and soliders).

The key is to keep the pressure on these thugs. All their propaganda talk of defeating the Army in FATA will go by the wayside if the government and the people are persistent about sorting these blokes out for once and for all and allow the Army to keep the pressure on even in the face of further TTP mayhem in Pakistani cities.

The TTP attacks are a double-edged sword here. While in the short term these attacks can scare the populace, the longer and more they do it, the public opinion will turn against them any more. No sane person in Pakistan is willing to buy the argument that Islam's cause is being served by these idiots destroying Pakistan and killing people all over.

High-level meeting stresses enhanced cooperation among LEAs

ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani decided to enhance cooperation among law enforcement agencies and improve operational capability of police, CID and special branch.

Senior military leadership and heads of law enforcement agencies participated in the meeting at PM Secretariat.

Chief ministers of Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP, advisor to Chief Minister Punjab, federal ministers besides Army Chief, DG ISI, head of FC, IGs police and provincial chief secretaries were present.

The meeting took stock of the security measures being adopted across the country, the wave of terrorism and the ongoing operation against terrorists.

The participants reiterated their resolve to root out terrorism by employing all the available resources, sources told Geo News.

It was decided during meeting that the Army will provide training to the police commandoes and equip them with modern weapons.

Decision was also made to release Rs2.5 billion for the relief and support of the displaced persons of Waziristan.

The military representatives gave detailed briefing on Waziristan operation while the Interior Ministry briefed the participants on the overall law and order situation.

If we sent in 65,000 soldiers, then this operation would go much better. I don't see how this couldn't work, although the economy will suffer due to the money involved in moving and maintaining that many soldiers. (Plus, we wouldn't have to make deals with local rival tribes since we would have the manpower to literally check every cave and house.)

(Plus, we wouldn't have to make deals with local rival tribes since we would have the manpower to literally check every cave and house.)

Firstly, the Indian forces which were deployed to the border after Mumbai attacks have not yet been taken back to the peace time areas of deployments. So PA has to maintain a credible force at its border too in case India feels for going to some adventurism.

Secondly, PA has already deployed around 2 divisions in the Swat area of operations, some formations in Bajaur & Mohmand Agency, some in the darra adam khel area too. So they can't spare more, otherwise they would have definitely done that. As the swat operations & other agency operations die down, additional troops will be relived & more fresh formations would be send to SWA in case needed.

‘Govt not considering increasing defence budget’

* Finance secy says $800m to be received under US aid package in this fiscal year

ISLAMABAD: No increase is being considered in the defence budget at this time in view of Operation Rah-e-Nijat, Finance Secretary Salman Siddique said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament House, he said expenditures incurred in the military operation in South Waziristan were being met from the budget already allocated. He said the government had recently released Rs 2.5 billion to meet the needs of the internally displaced persons (IDPs), adding that the government had spent Rs 11.5 billion on the IDPs since June.

Receiving aid: The finance secretary hinted that Islamabad would be receiving aid under the Kerry-Lugar legislation in instalments starting from March 2010, saying the country would receive some $800 million in the current fiscal year.

Salman said passing the Banking Companies Amendment Bill, 2009, was a pre-condition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), adding that once the bill was passed by parliament, $1.2 billion would be ensured at the next Pak-IMF review meeting scheduled in Dubai early next month.

He said the sole reason for the delay in the release of $530 million from the US Coalition Support Fund was an accounting method change, adding the amount was expected to be released by November.

The finance secretary said there was no dispute among provinces on the issue of vertical resource distribution, adding the issue would be discussed at the next National Finance Commission meeting to be held in Peshawar from October 20 to 30.

Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned his organization that failure to effectively tackle the Taliban in Afghanistan would have dire consequences for Pakistan and the region.

‘No more troops to Afghanistan now’ In a candid assessment of the Afghan situation, the Nato secretary general has asked the allies to ‘do more today’ if they want to ‘do less tomorrow.’ Speaking at a security conference in Bratislava on Thursday, Anders Fogh Rasmussen appeared aware of the growing resentment in Europe and America against the war in Afghanistan when he said the coalition forces needed ‘other international actors’ to help with the country’s reconstruction and development. The speech at the Slovak capital dwelt on the situation in Afghanistan, emphasised the need for training the Afghan National Army and warned of consequences for Pakistan and the region if the allies failed to win and the country fell to the Taliban.

The Nato chief’s views need to be examined from Pakistan’s point of view at a time when a military operation is going on in South Waziristan. For years, authorities across the Durand Line have urged Islamabad to ‘do more’ without bothering to examine their own record. The terrorists cross the border freely, but for some reason it is left only to Pakistan to seal the border. More important, the drug trade is a major source of arms purchases for the Taliban but the Karzai regime has failed to root it out.

Pakistan’s hands are already full, and it cannot be expected to remove what US Defence Secretary Robert Gates calls ‘the modern epicentre’ of jihad on the ‘Afpak’ border if the other side is unable or unwilling to carry out its part of the joint responsibility. More worrisome, Mr Rasmussen places too much hope on training and equipping the new Afghan National Army. While this is necessary to curtail the Taliban presence, the corrupt Karzai regime has shown itself to be incapable of rebuilding Afghanistan and carrying the people along. Electoral fraud and the run-off vote expected next month have added to the uncertainty. In view of the political crisis, the need for decisive military action accompanied by development efforts has become crucial. The Taliban are not on the run and an abandonment of Afghanistan will put pressure on Pakistan, causing, as Mr Rasmussen says, ‘instability throughout Central Asia.’

700,000 soldiers doesn’t mean that u can use all at once……..after all they are human being and have some requirements like rest etc.……to maintain a required strength, one should have to reserve a reasonable strength for the purpose of reinforcement, casualty replacement etc. And secondly, PA has to decide how much strength needed out there…….if 28,000-30,000 are enough for the job than no need to work up the troops unnecessarily.

Fierce fighting in Pakistan offensive, toll passes 160

Islamabad (ANTARA News/AFP) - Pakistan`s military said Friday that the death toll in a major military assault on the Taliban rose to more than 160 on the seventh day of intense fighting in the war-torn country`s tribal belt.

Thirteen militants, including six Uzbeks, have died since the last death toll, bringing the overall number of insurgents killed to 142, a statement said.

In addition, two soldiers have been killed in the offensive around South Waziristan, where authorities say scores of Al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked attacks have been masterminded, bringing the overall number of dead soldiers to 20.

ISLAMABAD: Another six militants have been killed in clashes with security forces in South Waziristan’s Kotkai.

According to officials, the military pounded militant hideouts with heavy artillery and air strikes in South Waziristan.

As a result three hideouts were also destroyed in Kotkai, which is the hometown of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

On Friday, the military claimed killing at least 13 militants, including Uzbeks, and arrested six suspected insurgents.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) says security forces have fully secured an important feature of Shisham-wam. According to the army, the militants in South Waziristan are on the run and are firing rockets from different locations on the advancing forces. — DawnNews

1. PA resources are being stretched, and a division is a lot more than 7000 troops.
2. The only feasible option is to move forces from the Indian border.
3. If we include Baluchistan, VIP protection, Foreign facilities and missions protection, infrastructure protection, augmentation for ASF/FC/ANF; you are talking about eight (8) divisions.
