Operation against Chotu Gang in Rajanpur

Air strikes ordered on Rajanpur gangsters

LAHORE: Security forces carrying out a joint operation in the riverine area of Rajanpur got a final nod on Tuesday for air strikes to hit the gangsters hiding in a 10km-long piece of tract surrounded by water.

Rajanpur Police requested Punjab IG Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera to provide them two military helicopters for the strikes. The forces also offered the gangsters to surrender before the air strikes.

A senior Police official privy to the development told Dawn that law enforcement agencies had halted the ground operation against the hardened criminals for the time being to avoid collateral damage.

“The forces have made last announcements asking women, children and other people to evacuate the island,” he said, adding that hundreds of people, mostly families of the gangsters, had been living in the island bordering Sindh and Balochistan for decades.

Villagers asked to move to safe places

The official said Police, Rangers, Elite Force commandos and Counter-Terrorism Department personnel were taking part in the operation, codenamed Zarb-i-Ahan.

Mushtaq Sukhera, the Punjab Police chief, visited frontline checkposts on Tuesday to review the operational strategy. He was accompanied by Police officers from Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, DPOs and senior officials of Rangers.

“The mortar attack by Rangers has given a visible support to Police against the gangsters,” the IG said.

According to a handout, he said the fight against the ‘evil elements’ of society had entered a final phase and security forces would eliminate them soon.

Pakistan needs SWAT Force. Swat Force should be under Federal Government and should be equipped with Good Transport helicopters which if needed can carry Sniper and Machine Gun guy.
very well said . perfect solution . Rather than always calling in the army , govt should take care if the threat situations itself . Army / Rangers must be called in under extreme situations .

Sir we already have trained manpower on footing of SWAT Force and so was envisaged in NACTA formation. But problem is that most of them except few in KPK are either on protocol/escort duties or guarding the politicians, their families, pets etc rather than performing the duties they were trained for.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif had extended a request to the Pakistan Army to provide helicopters for assistance.
Give political and legal coverage to Rangers and Army on footings of what Sindh Rangers have in Karachi and then see the miracle. How can U expect them to act while U are hesitant to legalize their actions.

Does no one in Pakistan care about collateral damage from indiscriminate use of air power in civilian areas, that too deal with a bunch of dacoits?

Is a simple statement for all civilians to vacate the area enough? What if they are being kept as hostages by these dacoits or are women children of these dacoits, wont they die too?

Yes many nations use airpower in civilian areas to deal with terrorist, but usually those civilian belong to other countries eg US regularly bombs the civilian areas in Iraq , Afghanistan and Pakistan..but thats because to them Iraqi/Afghan pr Pakistani civilian casualties are acceptable as long as they can save American lives.

But hardly any other nation pounds its own civilian areas from air.

Is it always necessary to go after a fly with a bazooka?

Talking about Punjab,Elite Force and CTD are built for SWAT roles.

We have a SWAT force, but unfortunely they are being used to protect VIPS.
while the Elite Force role has been expanded to VIP security, CTD still maintains the counter-terror role.

We need at least 50000 SWAT. All provinces combined.

Are you aware of ground realities in this particular area? What do you think this 'civilian area' look like? Where is it located and who really lives there? What are the weapons with criminals and what are the challenges to LEAs. Wouldn't it be better to understand the situation first?

RAJANPUR: Police personnel on Tuesday sought two gunship helicopters for aerial operation against Chotu gang in Rajanpur.

Operation conducted against Chotu Gang has entered its tenth day while the Rangers and police personnel have made special ships to advance towards Kacha Moro, Kacha Jamal 1 and Kacha Jamal 2.

However, 1,600 personnel belonging to Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Rangers, army and Punjab police have cleared around 70 percent Kacha area while more than 50 check posts have been established.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Bhawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, District Police Officer (DPO) Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur are also participating in the operation to encourage security officials.

Meanwhile, a control room has also been formed in Rahim Yar Khan whereas Inspector General (IG) Punjab is frequently inspecting all the activities.

A helipad was also established in the area.

More than 160 dacoits and miscreants backed by terror outfits and anti-state elements have been copped so far in security operation in Kacha Jamal area.

Earlier, few extremists were caught in possession of Indian weapons. Members of notorious Chotu gang are among the felons fighting the security personnel.

The arrests were made on leaks given by Research and Analysis Wing’s (RAW) spy who was arrested from Balochistan around two weeks ago.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif had extended a request to the Pakistan Army to provide helicopters for assistance. Chotu had managed to cross a police cordon around one of the islands adjacent to Indus River.

The gang killed a policeman while kept not less than eight hostages including three locals and eight police personnel. Police had launched an operation which continued for more than 22 days against them but in vain.

While keeping in view the security and survival of the area people, IG Punjab had ordered security forces to launch an operation against the aforesaid gangs for restoration of peace and tranquility in the region.

Is this news latest, I heard the same type of news 1 year back, and at that time combat helicopter was deployed and if I remmember it was Chotu Gang.

Can anybody explain what is this chotu gang, and what makes them so serious, that the combat hellicopter was needed against them.

Sir, I salute you :-) the job can be done with 5,000 also if properly deployed.
We live in Pakistan not Sweden. We have one of the highest crime ratios and one of the most volatile region. This SWAT force is must with at least 1000 Deployed in every major city and equipped with helicopters to reach far areas. Secondly we need forensic labs in every major city let say in a city with more than 2 million population thirdly. Murder should be investigated by Special Branch and every Police station should have at least 120 Police Man with at least 20 of them trained for Light Commando Role like Army LCB units.
