Chief of the Air Staff to Address Pacific Air Chiefs Symposium At Hawai

Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, Chief of the Air Staff is on an official visit to USA from 26-28 Sep 17 to attend Pacific Air Chiefs Symposium at Hawai. The visit is intended to further strengthen the existing defence cooperation between the Air Forces of the participating countries in the Pacific region. In addition to the hosts, there would be Air Chiefs from 18 countries including Australia and Japan attending the Symposium.


During his stay at Joint Base Pearl Harbour – Hickam, Hawai, the CAS would be addressing Air Chiefs from various Air Forces attending the Symposium. In his talk he will delve on the Indian Air Force’s perspective on the challenges to Regional Security. The Symposium is aimed at strengthening relationships, enabling engagement in productive exchanges and promote understanding of joint issues and challenges. Discussions would also take place on air perspective in the maritime domain along with issues like counter-insurgency.


The visit of the Indian Air Force Chief would provide further impetus towards increasing defence cooperation between the Pacific region
Air Forces and pave the way for greater interaction and cooperation in future.

Closing Ceremony Exercise Yudh Abhyas – 2017

Joint Indo US exercise, Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2017 concluded on 27 September 2017 at Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM), Washington, USA.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas is an annual bilateral exercise designed to strengthen the US and Indian Army partnership. The training was focused on specialised drills and procedures involved in counter insurgency, counter terrorist operations in an urban environment. The initial days of field training comprised of platoon level training on basic manoeuvres, which then progressed towards company level operations. Helicopter based mobilisation of teams for quick response was also practised.

The two Armies have gained from each other’s expertise and experience in conduct of platoon and company level operations. In addition the Indian contingent got a first-hand experience of operating with the ‘Stryker’ Infantry Combat Vehicle and the US Army gained an insight on the training of an infantry unit in a mountainous terrain.


A closing ceremony, to commemorate the proceedings of two weeks, showcased the flourishing partnership between the two nations. The impressive closing ceremony was witnessed by the officials of both the Armies including five Indian Army Veterans.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2017 achieved all joint training objectives and this shall further reinforce defence cooperation between the two Nations.

Curtain raiser: INDO-US joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018

As part of the ongoing Indo-US defence cooperation, a joint military training Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 is scheduled to be conducted in the foothills of Himalayas at Chaubattia in Uttarakhand from 16 September to 29 September 2018. This will be the 14th edition of the joint military exercise hosted alternately by both countries.


The joint exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 will simulate a scenario where both nations will work together in counter insurgency and counter terrorism environment in mountainous terrain under United Nation charter. The two week exercise will witness participation of about 350 personnel of the US Army and similar strength of the Indian Army. The exercise curriculum is progressively planned where the participants are initially made to get familiar with each other’s organizational structure, weapons, equipment, confidence training and tactical drills. Subsequently, the training advances to joint tactical exercises wherein the battle drills of both the armies are coherently unleashed. The training will culminate with a final validation exercise in which troops of both countries will jointly carry out an operation against terrorists in a fictitious but realistic setting.


Over the years the two countries have decided to progressively increase the scope and content of this joint exercise. Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 will witness a Division Headquarter based Command Post Exercise, an Infantry Battalion carrying out Field Training Exercise and discussions on issues of mutual interest by experts of both countries.

Both armies have vast experience in active counter insurgency & counter terrorism operations and sharing each other’s tactics & drills in such diverse environment is of immense value. The exercise is a great step for the armies of the two democratic countries to train together and gain together from each other’s rich operational experiences. The latest exercise will help further build interoperability between the forces of both the nations.

Opening Ceremony: Indo-US Joint Military Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018

Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 a joint military exercise of Indian and US armies, commenced this morning at Chaubattia, Uttarakhand with a short yet impressive opening ceremony that saw the unfurling of the national flags of both countries to the strains of "Jana Gana Mana” and “The Star Spangled Banner". Indian and US soldiers stood side by side, and gave a ceremonial salute to the two senior most officers of the US and Indian side reviewing the ceremony.

The US contingent was represented by 1st Infantry Battalion, 23 Infantry Regiment, US Army while Indian side is represented by an Infantry Battalion. General Officer Commanding, 6 Mountain Division welcomed the US soldiers and in his inaugural remarks highlighted the common shared beliefs of democracy, freedom, equality and justice that are precious to both nations.

Battalion strength army personnel from USA and an equal number of Indian soldiers are taking part in the two week long event that will see them hone their tactical and technical skills in countering insurgency and terrorism in a UN peace keeping scenario involving a combined deployment at a brigade level. State of the art equipment for surveillance and tracking, specialist weapons for close quarter battle with militants, explosive and improvised explosive device detectors, as well as the latest communication equipment are being fielded by both sides. Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of well developed tactical drills for neutralisation of likely threats that may be encountered in UN peace keeping operations during division level command post exercise. The experts from both sides will also hold discussions to share each others’ experience in varied topics for mutual benefit.

Closing Ceremony: Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018

Exercise Yudh Abhyas, a joint Indo-US Military exercise which witnessed participation of an Infantry Battalion of Indian Army and the 1st Battalion 23 Infantry Regiment of US Army concluded at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand on 29 Sep 2018.

The exercise was the 14th in the Yudh Abhyas series, which started in 2004 under US Army Pacific Partnership Programme. Exercise Yudh Abhyas strengthens and broadens interoperability and cooperation between the Indian and US armies. It is the fourth Indian US Army exercise at Chaubattia and complements number of other exchanges and exercise between the forces. Over the years the two countries have decided to progressively increase the scope and content of the combined exercise and Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 has witnessed a Division Headquarter based command post exercise and one Infantry Battalion each carrying out field training exercise under a joint Brigade Headquarters and discussions on issues of mutual interest by experts of both countries. The exercise provided an ideal platform for the personnel of the two countries to share their experiences on counter terrorist operations, especially in mountainous terrain.

The commanders and staff officers of both sides were exercised to work in close coordination to receive and collate intelligence and to issue suitable operational orders to the combined field training components, who executed these orders on ground in simulated realistic situation.

The training culminated in a 48 hours consolidation and validation exercise in which troops carried out a daring rescue and destroy mission in the general area of Pilkholi near Chaubattia. The final exercise was reviewed by senior officers from both sides.

Besides training, both the contingents also participated in a number of extracurricular activities including friendly football and basketball matches and a cultural programme during the 'Barakhana' on the final day. A magnificent parade and the customary exchange of mementoes marked the successful completion of Indo-US combined Army Exercise.

The combined exercise was undoubtedly, an unprecedented success. Besides promoting understanding and interoperability between the two armies, it further helped in strengthening ties between India and US.

Curtain Raiser: Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2019

As part of the ongoing Indo-US defence cooperation, a joint military training, Exercise Yudh Abhyas - 2019 is being conducted at Joint Base Lewis Mc Chord, Washington, USA from 05-18 September 2019. Exercise Yudh Abhyas is one of the largest joint running military training and defence corporation endeavors between Indian Armed Forces and United States of America Armed Forces. This will be the 15th edition of the joint exercise hosted alternately between the two countries.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas will provide an opportunity to the Armed forces of both countries to train in an integrated manner at Battalion level with joint planning at Brigade level. Multiple scenarios will be rehearsed during the joint exercise with a view to understand each other's organisational structure and battle procedures which would result in a higher degree of jointmanship that would further facilitate interoperability between the Armed forces of both Countries to meet any unforeseen contingency across the Globe. The exercise is also an ideal platform to learn from each other's expertise and experiences of planning and execution of operations.

Both Armies will jointly train, plan and execute a series of well developed operations for neutralization of threats of varied nature. ln the end a joint exercise will be undertaken by both countries in an operational setting under an United Nations Mandate. Experts from both sides will hold expert Academic and Military Discussions to share each other's experiences on varied topics for mutual benefit.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas - 2019, a joint military exercise between Indian and US armies, commenced this morning at Joint Base Lewis MC Chord, Washington, USA with a brief yet impressive opening ceremony that saw the unfurling of the national flags of both countries to the strains of The Star Spangled Banner and Jana Gana Mana. The US contingent was represented by a company of 5-20 Infantry Battalion of the US Army while the Indian side was representing The Assam Regiment. Major General Xavier Brunsen, US Army welcomed the Indian soldiers, and in his inaugural remarks highlighted the common shared beliefs of democracy, freedom, equality and justice that are precious to both nations.

Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of well-developed tactical drills for neutralization of likely threats that may be encountered in UN peace keeping operations. Experts from both sides will also hold detailed discussions to share their experience on varied topics for mutual benefit.
