Myanmar announces 2015 budget of USD2.5 billion

Myanmar's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has proposed a 2015 defence budget of MMK2.61 trillion (USD2.5 billion), according to reports in the country on 28 January. The figure represents a year-on-year nominal increase of 10% and approximately 3.7% of national GDP.

In presenting the defence budget to parliament, defence minister Lieutenant General Wai Lwin said the expenditure will be directed at supporting operational expenses, procurement, salaries, constructing and maintaining military facilities, and providing education and training to military personnel.

Reports said Lt Gen Wai Lwin also noted a potential further increase to the defence budget if a separate proposal to provide the military with a pay increase is approved by Myanmar's parliament before implementation at the beginning of the financial year in April.

The Ministry of Defence will be spend 33 per cent of its budget on defence purposes, said Defence Minister Lt. General Wai Lwin on January 26 at a parliament session.

The ministry plans to spend over 58 per cent of military expenditures for salaries and other expenses, 33 per cent for defence purposes, over nine per cent to construct military infrastructures, over three per cent for education and healthcare sectors and almost one per cent for elite forces, the minister said.

“The defence budget is Ks 2.6 trillion in total.
But we planned to increase salaries to about Ks 137 billion in total, so we estimate the budget will be Ks 2.75 trillion, which includes the pay rise.
We do not know yet whether the parliament will accept this or not.
The defence purposes will be calculated based on the original proposal, which requires about Ks 2.6 trillion.
The expenses will be spent to produce and buy armoured vehicles, fighter jets, heavy guns and ammunition.
The annual budget for defence purposes have not been changed.
It remains one third of total military expenses.
The budget estimate for the 2014-2015 fiscal year is one billion kyats less than the budget estimate for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
The ministry of defence had Ks 2.613 triillion to spend at the end of March this year.
The proposed budget for this year is Ks 2.612 trillion, so the ministry proposed one billion kyats less than last year’s budget,” Minister Wai Lwin told reporters.

If only Indonesia taking a budget approach like Myanmar we will get around 57 billion US dollar for defense budget

Due to our geopolitical position and local rebel.. If the cease fire agreement which will sign in FEB of this year is successful.. We can reduce unneeded bill on fighting each other.. Just need 1.5 B at that time.. And can use more for infrastructure which is lacked currently.. Plz pray us.. :'(

I don't think so nyi lay. We need to move away from stamping out ethnic rebellions and strengthening our conventional forces. Unfortunately I don't think we can reduce our defence budget. Geo-politics is such that a strong and competent conventional force is a necessity particularly in the turbulent region we are in and especially with those bengalis next door.

bro.. partly agreed.. but we just need to reduced just 800m in a fews years ( just 2 or 3yr) only if we got cease fire with rebels.. within these years , we can use more in development and infrastructure projects in rural area (especially in rebel states ).. so they will also pleased to cease fire with gov and this will be a pressure for other rebels who deny to involve in cease- fire agreement.. we can grab thier belief as well..!! we can also use in reforming economy and building infrastructure to got smooth flow of trade in low cost... it will attract more FDI and helps to boom our economy.. after all , some dreams of our military will become true..
