After the 15th amendment to the constitution all religions are supposed to get equal status in the eyes of the state, but yesterday the first sitting of the parliament, since the amendment, started with recitation from only the holy Quran.

Eminent jurist Shahdeen Malik told The Daily Star yesterday, "As other religions have been given the same status and rights, recitation only from the holy Quran undermines and negates the new constitutional provision."

He said the parliament, which brought the new changes to the constitution, should not act in violation of this provision.

The 15th amendment came into effect on Sunday with President Zillur Rahman signing the bill into a law.

A number of senior officials of the parliament secretariat said after the latest amendment to the constitution, followers of other religions may demand that recitations be done from their holy books as well, at the beginning of the parliament's sittings.

Speaker Abdul Hamid said the constitution was amended just a few days ago. "It will take some time to take preparations to begin recitations from other holy books. We will have to appoint some people who will recite from the Geeta and Tripitok," said Hamid, who presided over the sitting at the beginning of yesterday's proceedings.

The speaker said the current session might be prorogued this week after having two more sittings. "So, recitations from other holy books may begin from next session," he added.

errr, comparisons regarding religion
is a really nasty thing to discuss
let alone in terms of politics.

They are playing a dangerous game
when all a citizen wants is to live in a decent place.

Nevertheless a valid point if raised by the 'other' religious groups. Some minor costs likie this are needed for transformation into a true secular country.

. . .
How would they fear Islam , when most of the scholars and thinkers reside in Bangladesh :P

They study the faith in depth and are respectable thinkers in Islamic world and that has to be respected

I think for the recitation of Quran its great why not their country ?

reciting so many different books to begin a national.assembly proceeding will be ime consuming....they better abolish all recitstions and let members recite whatever religious cermon they want to recite on their own
may be a 5 or 10 minute recitation break before starting parliament nusiness will do....all can do what they want.

Is the complete Koran recited?

I think excerpts are.

why can't they begin the parliament's sittings with their National Enthum

yes some verses are recited. but as suggested that excerpts from all religious books should be recited.that will take too long....and will lose the religious significance.just a showcase event from which nobody will benifit.

Excerpts of other religions does not take time.

It is done in India and there has been no problems so far.

To my mind, while it is good that one is reminded of God, when one starts the Session, what is important is that these people remember God and work for their Nation and their people and not for themselves, as is the usual case!

In fact, there is a huge civil society movement in India basically to remove corruption in the govt and high places to include the bureaucrats, politicians and the Judiciary.

Bengalis fear Islam and mosques. In the name of secularism they have destroyed Islam. They do not follow Islam properly neither they look like Muslims. This is their problem.

I'm sorry, but could you please explain to us how exactly you have come to this conclusion of yours? I've seen and read over many of your trolling posts before but this time you have crossed the line.

Actually Bangladesh is no more Islamic country. It is now officially a secular country and I believe secular state approach neutral path when comes to religion. So therefore Bangladeshi parliament is not obligated to encourage or discourage Islam. It should follow neutral path and abolish this Islamic practice from parliament.

It is now clear to Bangladeshi Muslims that Awami league doesn't believe in Allah since they removed "Absolute trust in Allah" from constitution.

Falcon,

You raise an intriguing question.

How does a person look a Muslim?
