New Delhi: Narendra Modi, who became the Indian Prime Minister after securing a huge victory in the 2014 General Election, has huge support in Vietnam.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center has surveyed over 15,000 people in 10 Asian nations how much they trusted the region’s most-high profile leaders - Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and PM Narendra Modi - when it comes to world affairs.

Nine countries were included in the survey – Vietnam, Australia, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Pakistan.

Since Modi was most trusted in Vietnam where 56 percent said they had confidence that the Indian leader would do the right thing regarding world affairs, no prizes for guessing which countrymen showed the least confidence.

Only seven percent Pakistanis have confidence in Modi.

However, Modi had strong backing in Australia and Japan. Here is the percentage of those surveyed and exuded confidence in Modi:

Australia (51 percent), Japan (47%), Philippines (44%), South Korea (39%), Malaysia (34%), China (29%), Indonesia (28%)

“Overall, Modi suffers from a lack of recognition,” the Pew report, however, added. “A quarter or more of respondents in six of the nine countries surveyed [about him] voiced no opinion about him as a leader,” the report said.

As expected, China’s Xi Jinping fared much better in Pakistan. Fifty-nine percent Pakistanis said they were confident the Chinese President would do the right thing on the world stage.

Jinping was least trusted by people of Japan and most trusted by Malaysia.

In case of Japan's Abe, people of Malaysia (73 percent) trust him the most. He is least trusted in South Korea (7 percent).

He commands investor trust but even global leaders of friendly countries are somewhat vary of Narendra Modi. He's not a statesman, often breaches diplomatic protocol and does not adhere to the outline of his FO in dealing leaders and trade delegations.
