Dont be foolish to think this forum is really talking about democracy. Its a sheep skin on wolf summit trying to continue the legacy of US imperialism. If Indonesia really attends, it show Indonesia is in cahoot with US imperialism.

You think its something proud to be invited by this bogus summit? US want those attendee to continue wager their tail for US order. Those countries not invited are real righteous countries who control their own destiny rather than follow US order blindly.

Indonesian people support democracy, this event is inline with our interest. More democracy forum Indonesian government participate, more democracy idea exposure come to our people, media, and leaders. This will make the root of democracy value strengthen to our people.

If you dont like democracy, it is your own problem and it means you are quite content with the way your country is being lead. We have different value in this matter and as Muslim I see democracy has similar concept with what our God stated in Quran. All of first 4 Caliph were also elected through people consultation, even the first one, Abu Bakr includes heat debate and votings.

Quran, As-Syura verse 42

"Those who hearken to their Lord, and establish regular Prayer; who (conduct) their affairs by mutual consultation among themselves; who spend out of what We bestow on them for Sustenance" [are praised] [3]

No, it only has to do with the scripted answer that has been banged into his head since he was a young school child...where if something in the world does not conform to the CCP's viewpoint it is an inherent evil and a conspiracy against China and its people.

Indonesian 1998 democratic movement is lead by Amien Rais, Muhammadiyah Chairmant, second biggest Islamic organization in Indonesia. He then become the Chairmant of MPR, the highest Consultative assembly in Indonesia (higher than parliament during that time) where the assembly made many constitutional changes to make Indonesia become more democratic, the changes that can be seen like the limitation of President term into 2 times and Direct Presidential Election. Other reforms made in parliament that resulted in bringing Armed Force into professional force (stay away from Politics etc)

Muhammadiyah (Arabic: محمدية‎, followers of Muhammad); also known as the Muhammadiyah Society (Indonesian: Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah) is a major Islamic non-governmental organization in Indonesia.[2] The organization was founded in 1912 by Ahmad Dahlan in the city of Yogyakarta as a reformist socioreligious movement, advocating ijtihad - individual interpretation of Qur'an and Sunnah, as opposed to Taqlid - conformity to the traditional interpretations propounded by the ulama.[3] It played an important role in the expansion of Salafism in Indonesia.[4] Since its establishment, Muhammadiyah has adopted a reformist platform mixing religious and secular education,[5] primarily as a way to promote the upward mobility of Muslims toward a 'modern' community and to purify Indonesian Islam of local syncretic practices.[5] It continues to support local culture and promote religious tolerance in Indonesia, while a few of its higher education institutions are attended mostly by non-Muslims, especially in East Nusa Tenggara and Papua provinces. The group also runs a large chain of charity hospitals,[2] and operated 128 universities as of the late 1990s.[6]

In Parliament reform, another Islamist leader, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, respected lawyer, become very important

Amien Rais? But I didn't see Amien Rais in the movement back in 1998. The main figure who was considered as significant to oppose Soeharto was Megawati, not Amien Rais. She was the first who spark the Anti-Soeharto movement in those years. I remember that the opinion of Anti-Soeharto had appeared even in 1996, when I entered University. When we came into a debate forum, our professor warned us to not said Any Subversion speech. And the first political figure who appeared to have trouble with Soeharto was Megawati, when she become the head of PDI party. She became so popular that Soeharto caused some trouble with her party. To an extend that PDIP was born. And I still remember, most militant figures in the movement was mostly came from PDIP. Because that party was the symbol of the opposition after all.

People like Adnan Buyung Nasution, WS Rendra, etc was only appeared when the struggle become the worst. Shortly before Harmoko asked Soeharto to step down in DPR. While Amien Rais; I remember him only when he led "Poros Tengah" to prevent Megawati from becoming the next president after Habibie step down. He was known as the one who crowned Gus Dur as the next president.

So No. It is not Amien Rais that we should call "Bapak Reformasi". It should be Megawati that we should call"Ibu Reformasi". Because she's the one who start it all.

At least, that is what I remembered from that day as a University Student. What about you? How old are you in 1998? What do you remember about that day?

She was the first who spark the Anti-Soeharto movement in those days; and PDI has even got trouble with Soeharto in 1997. Shortly before many college Students went to the road. To an extend that Megawati founded PDIP. The most militant figures who involved in that movement mostly from PDIP.

LOL. The movement started in UGM university where Amien Rais become a lecture there. Huge demonstration in UGM that later spread to other campuses. Saying you dont see Amien Rais during 1998 movement is such a lie, I dont expect respected Indonesian member like you saying thing like this.

Megawati did try to challenge Soeharto but failed since she doesnt have any connection to student organization in university. PDI-P is already silent during the 1990's after Soeharto made action. PDI-P is secular nationalist party.

If you see student organization in UI, ITB, and other state owned universities, they are in majority lead by Islamist group.

BEM UI during 1998 is Rama Pratama that later join Islamist Party, PKS

Chairman of BEM (Student Executive Body), University of Indonesia, Rama Pratama

For non Indonesian members information, University of Indonesia is one of the oldest state university in Indonesia and the biggest one. Many leaders coming from this university and during the event BEM UI Chairman become the leader of BEM Seluruh Indonesia ( whole Indonesia ). There is nationalist secular students movement as well (FORKOT/Forum Kota) but they are minority and not in leadership position of the movement.

University of Indonesia

The one that later start occupying Parliament Building is IPB and wellknown with its Islamist university students who dominate BEM (Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa). Of course Parliament was also pro democratic movement during that time since they open the Parliament building gate for university students. Army, particularly Kostrad which guards the parliament building also allow university students to occupy the building. This shows Indonesian elite leaders (parliament and Military) support student movement. Later we know that many important cabinet members resign and this lead to Soeharto resign as well.

Amien Rais is acknowledge by international journalist ( fair judgement ) as the leader of movement

During the reformation (1998)

I was junior university student at that time and have close relationship with student activist leaders in my campus. I am among the first university students who do the demonstration ( despite junior student) in my campus, my campus is also quite early joining the movement, practically whole my older brothers were also in Parliament building during the peak of movement. The movement grows gradually, many university students were not joining in early movement.

I know exactly what happened during that period, even I know Trisakti university is one of the university who started the demonstration very very late. When all of the other campuses have been actively demonstrating, Trisakti university student demonstration is one of the very late ones in Jakarta. But Trisakti university become famous since their first massive demonstration in front of their university building become chaos as around 4 university students were shot death and it leads to Riot in Jakarta in Mei 1998.

The movement started from Jogya, in University of Gajah Mada (state owned), where Amien Rais is Professor there. Amien Rais is Chairman of second biggest Islamic organization at that time, Muhammadiyah, and this give what he said during that time has weigh and influence. Muhammadiyah never become opposition group during Soeharto regime until Amien Rais become the Chairman. UGM university student demonstration inside their campus is quite shocking, I remember it is Tempo magazine who covered the event in UGM campus Jogya, Central Java. This really wake up many student activist in BEM (Student Executive Body) across universities in Indonesia. State owned universities student activist (BEM) then take the lead, and Rama Pratama from University of Indonesia become leader ( collective leader )

Basically the movement is not like in Iran or Philippine where Khameini and Corazon Aquino are very central character during Revolution in Iran and Philippine. Indonesian intellectuals, activist, press, even leaders who were in government supported the movement.

ICMI which is basically Islamist group made during Soeharto regime and lead by Habibie is also important factor as many Golkar members and Islamist activist were there, including Amien Rais. Golkar during that time was lead by HMI Alumni leaders like Akbar Tanjung. HMI is Islamic Student Body who was very important to topple Soekarno during 1965-1966.

GOLKAR is the dominant party during Soeharto regime and always get around 70-80 % vote ( we know it is a result of not fair election). I will explain more later about Indonesia 1997-1998 Reformation Movement.

No, it only has to do with the scripted answer that has been banged into his head since he was a young school child...where if something in the world does not conform to the CCP's viewpoint it is an inherent evil and a conspiracy against China and its people.

I dont know what is in the mind of Chinese people, but as I said if they feel satisfied with their country then I cannot make any comment about it. China has made amazing development economically, then I can understand if they feel content about their country. Tiananment square event happened during the period where China was still a poor country.

For Indonesian case, the group of people who wanted democracy during Soeharto regime is actually middle class and intellectuals who dont have any financial problem. This is why the demonstration were done by university students and being backed by university professors and intellectuals, not by farmers, fishermen, or labor union.

The transition between Authoritarian into Democratic state should be done peacefully and I dont recommend something like happening in Syria and Libya to happen. If the leadership doesnt want to let go their power and would rather to kill their people instead, then I recommend the people to be patience.

The transition process in Indonesia is also not coming just within 1-2 years between 1997-1998. Soeharto has made liberalization already and allow open discussion to happen in public media like TV where during that time TV stations were owned by his son and daughter, also one owned by Golkar leader.

The democratic process during Soeharto regime was also happening in Campuses where there is executive body like BEM where the President will be elected directly through debates and votings and also there will be Legislative body as well. Debate and democratic process happened at that time to introduce university students the actual democratic process.

Actually, during the movement, there was no restriction happening on our TV channel, many demonstrations were covered by TV which are owned by Soeharto son (RCTI/SCTV) and daughter (TPI) and Golkar leader (Aburizal Bakrie (ANTV).

SCTV for instant invited former Soeharto minister who told Soeharto needs to be replaced. The journalist who did the interview is Ira Kusno.

Ira Kusno is now having her own Public Relation company and usually is invited to be moderator during Presidential Debate

Well I didn't see him, at all. I studied in Ubaya, Surabaya back then. What I seen from the news mostly Megawati. People talk about her more than anyone (including my university dosen (Professor in English)); like she's the icon of new leadership back then. I didn't heard Amien Rais until later (Poros Tengah). What I remember until now is the struggle between PDI and PDI-P in 1996, then an Anti-China riot in Ujung Pandang (Makassar) in 1997, later Anti China riot in Jakarta and Solo in 1998.

Why the riot? Well, I'm sure you understand, that when there is an event that can endanger your (and your family) life, such University Student movement become meaningless. You'll more focus on the riot than anything else. Maybe that's why Megawati become more famous than Amien Rais and others in the eyes of common people. Because she was the first one. The name like Amien Rais became meaningless when there was a bigger figure than him. Like Megawati and of course, University student movement itself.

I am not a big fan of democracy itself.. I think it is outdated system currently and we need to find a new system and I mean the whole world.. Where the next 200-300 years that new system will be functional because Democracy has to many flaws and nearing expiry date.

It is outdated... In my prediction democracy as a whole will disappear by 2050s and will become a thing of the past

Soeharto and his big family. He is still respected until his death.
