One killed in clash at planned India nuclear plant site
BBC News - One killed in clash at planned India nuclear plant site

One person has died after police in western India clashed with locals protesting against the planned construction of a nuclear power plant.

Police said they were forced to open fire after protesters attacked a police station close to the proposed site in Jaitapur, in the state of Maharashtra.

Construction of the $10bn (£6bn) plant - expected to be the biggest in the world - is due to begin this year.

The proposal has sparked massive protests across the country.

Residents in the area gathered near the proposed site, expressing anger at the plan, which they fear threatens their traditional fishing grounds.
'Vandalised'

Madhukar Gaikwad, an official from the Ratnagiri district, said about 700 to 800 fisherman and villagers surrounded a local police station in the village of Nate and started to vandalise it.

"The mob burnt down the records room, destroyed computers and a TV set and put a police van on fire.

"We tried to disperse them by using tear-gas and cane-charge. We used plastic bullets as well, but nothing worked. Finally, we used live ammunition in which one person was injured who died on his way to the hospital," he said.

More than 50 people were injured, including police officers.

Protests have been mounting over the proposed 9,900 megawatt, six-reactor facility, which is being built with technical help from the French energy giant Areva.

Environmental experts say that Konkan, the region in which Jaitapur lies, is one of the most biodiverse regions on earth - and claim it will be destroyed by the plant.

Last December, the Indian magazine Outlook titled an article about the Jaitapur plant "The rape of Eden".

Others have expressed concern that the facility is being built in a seismically-active area.

A mob opposing a government plan to build a nuclear plant in the western Indian state of Maharashtra ransacked a hospital and set buses on fire Tuesday during a protest strike.

Residents of Jaitapur have been protesting the proposed plant since the government's plans became public four years ago. The opposition has grown since Japan's nuclear crisis, with critics noting that Jaitapur is in a seismic zone.

The general strike was called after police fired to disperse protesters who attacked a police station Monday, killing one person.

The town's streets were mostly deserted as the strike took effect. But by midday, groups of people converged on the street, shouting slogans against the government. The mob later ransacked a government-run hospital and set at least three public transport buses on fire, police said.

Construction is to start this year on the first of six units at the proposed $10 billion plant, billed as the biggest in the world. The project by the French nuclear energy company Areva will generate 9,900 megawatts of power when completed. The first unit is expected to start producing power in 2018.

India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said additional safeguards will be taken in light of the troubles at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Fukushima plant's cooling systems were destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami last month, and the Japanese operator has struggled to get the plant back under control.

Ramesh described the events unfolding at Fukushima as a "wake-up call," but said India could not abandon nuclear energy in its quest for clean energy to fuel its rapid economic growth.

The government has countered protesters by asserting that the site is safe and the plant's location on a high cliff would save it from being hit by a tsunami.

Jaitapur is about 260 miles (420 kilometers) south of Mumbai, India's financial hub and the Maharashtra state capital.

Anti-nuclear protesters plan to march Saturday from a nuclear power plant near Mumbai to Jaitapur to oppose the new project.

At present, nuclear energy forms only 3 percent of power available in India. The government has announced plans to increase the share of its nuclear power generation to 13 percent of its energy basket by 2030 to meet the rising demand for electricity.

Power of Democracy !!! Indians have the right to voice their opinion on whether to build or not to build a Nuclear Power Plant but will the Indian Government listen ?

I hope goi dont listen to them there is a massive need of power in our country

first of all the protests are politically motivated. shiv sena is using crises in japan to project bad image of proposed nuclear plant.

i think it wd be wise to review the design and safety features of proposed nuclear power plant and if the experts agree then costruction should begin as soon as possible.

lastly indian govt is already listening wen it said tht safety features of all nuclear power plants will be reviewed. people have right to protest but not at the cost of making it violent.

Nuclear power plant is all about safely using nuclear energy. The people (bogus NGO) protesting have no idea about nuclear power plant safety and this is not even 1st power plant. The protest intensified after Japan nuclear power plant disaster but situation in India is completely different, scientific safety assessment is needed to tackle the potential hazard in case of natural disaster. this kind of ill-informed protester are maligning India's image.

No it was not, It was started by former Supreme Court Judge, P B Sawant. then Shivsena jumped in to perform chance pe dance (behaving like congress, opposition for the sake opposition).

this is not like nuclearplants go boom every day.....yes they are dangerous but a load of things is in place to ensure that something does not happen....and the cause of the japanese incident is not the faultiness of the reactor but instead it was that after the tsunami the powerlines were cut off and the power to the colling agents could not be provided....people are going really ballistic with no warheads inside!!

"don't listen" ? <---- HUH !!!

So India is not a real democracy if she doesn't listen to the majority's voice/Opinion !!!

Curfew imposed in Ratnagiri till 9am tomrrw .
Only 10 patients visited my dad's hospital . Of which 2 were injured in protests .
Shivsena wtf . Most waste political party I have ever seen in my life .
Uddhav Thackeray learn something frm Raj Thackeray .

I have literally gone insane . Full ratnagiri city has been taken over by shivsena goons .
The one who died yesterday , his family members are not accepting the dead body . They are saying they wont accept the body unless CM cancels the project .
Height of BS .

Get a life dude .

There are protests in european nations over Nuclear plants .

And my hometown is ratnagiri , I assure u majority of us support the nuclear plant .

We need power....
We should not cancel the project,But we should choose other place

or anyother state.....why only JAITAPUR????
we dont have any other place in whole south india???

I still dnt understand how could ppl of Jaitapur and Sakhri nate support Shiv sena .
Sakhri nate and nearby villages are fully muslim dominated areas (around 90% ).
Even Ratnagiri city has around 40% muslim population.

MLA , MP and mayor are all from Congress party .
Still they are acting as puppets .

Shivsena brought their shivsainiks frm Mumbai as there was very low local support.

Why ?
What's wrong with Jaitapur ?
The project site is the most ideal site for nuclear plant .
The site is around 100 metres above sea lvl with one side near sea and back side there is creek . So no problem of Tsunami too .

There was no bridge directly connecting Jaitapur to the coastal highway , they had to drive 20 kms to reach it . Now when the project was announced bridge was built connecting directly the highway .
But these dumb ppl wont see the development happening

Issue has been highly politicised by Shiv sena and the NGOs

There is no way the government is taking the project back .
The coastal guard station was set up in Ratnagiri .
Many other defense related projects are planned .
Port , railway station , airport is being upgraded.
NH 17 which was plannd to make 4 lanes since 6-7 yrs but no grants were given . As soon as project was announced just a month later grants were announced for expansion of the highway .
This project has given me lot of hope for the development of Ratnagiri
