By DUBAI (AL ARABIYA)

The Dubai-based MBC group on Thursday signed a deal with Qatar's public media group to produce a television series about the autobiography of the second Caliph of Islam Omar bin al-Khattab, scheduled to be aired during the holy month of Ramadan 2011.

The agreement was signed during a press conference at MBC's Dubai headquarter and was attended by the group Chairman Sheikh Waleed al-Ibrahim and senior officials at the MBC group. The event was attended from the Qatari side Sheikh Fisal bin Jasem Al Thani and Qatar TV chairman Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Kawari.

Sheikh al-Ibrahim said the series will be dubbed into languages mostly spoken by Muslims and subtitled into other languages such as English and French.

The significance of the TV series depicting the life of Caliph Omar lies in the fact that he had played a very important role in the history of Islam and its spread after the death of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

Such a TV drama would become an important reference in the whole Islamic history.

Addressing the participants in the press conference, Sheikh al-Ibrahim said that Caliph Omar represents a very good model that should be followed by all Muslims.

He added that the main purpose of producing such an important dramatic work is to correct the wrong and misunderstood parts of the Islamic history – whether intentionally or unintentionally – at a time when there is controversy going on everywhere about all the Islamic beliefs and concepts.

"We are in dire need, now more than any other time in the past, of imitating such a great character as Caliph Omar and taking it a good model to be followed," he said.

The MBC group chairman said that the drama will be written by TV dramatist Dr Waleed Seif and will be directed by TV director Hatem Ali.

He pointed out that the TV drama will be revised by prominent clerics and professors of Islamic law (sharia) as Dr Yussef al-Qaradawi, Dr Salman al-Ouda, Dr Abdul Wahab al-Tariri, Dr Ali al-Salabi, Dr Saad Matar al-Otaibi and Dr Akram Diaa al-Omary.

Top Saudi cleric slams TV series on Umar set for Ramadan telecast

Saudi Arabia's top Islamic cleric has joined thousands of other scholars and viewers in slamming an historic TV series to be telecast during the fasting month of Ramadan, covering the life of some of ancient Muslim leaders who were companions to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al Shaikh, the Mufti of the Gulf Kingdom, said those behind "Umar Al Farooq" series have committed a "grave mistake and a crime" by spending their money on the production of such TV work.

"Turning the life of Muslim Caliphs and the Prophet's companions into TV and cinema work is wrong and brings insults and criticism to them," the Mufti told thousands of Muslims during Friday's open-air prayers in Riyadh.

"Return to your God and stop wasting your money on wrong things.this is a grave mistake and a crime..all those who are funding, adopting and participating in this work are mistaken and misled," he added.

Al Shaikh said those who want to promote Islam and its leaders, including Umar, could do so by writing books or translating publications on the life of those leaders to other languages. "Umar Al Farooq and his associates are among the best people in history.their sublime life and struggle should not be converted to TV films, which could be defamed by the opponents of Islam."

Thousands of scholars, dignitaries and other people have already used social networks and newspapers to attack the episode "Omar Al Farooq", better known as Umar ibn Al-Khattāb, the most powerful of the four Rashidun Caliphs and one of the most influential Muslim rulers in history.

Omar, who succeeded Abu Bakr Al Siddiq as the second Muslim Caliph before he died in 644, was a Sahabi (companion) of the Prophet.

The series, to be broadcast by the Saudi Middle East Broadcasting Company television is a joint production by MBC and Qatar's TV.

More than 550 actors from most Arab countries take part in the series.

Umar is personified by Syrian actor Samir Ismail while Abu Bakr is acted by Ghassan Massoud, also Syrian, who acted as Saluhddin in the famous film "Kingdom of Heavens" which covers the conflict about Jerusalem.

This high quality production will lead to more chaos than doing anything good and also Islamic ally it is not right to depict any of the great Sahabas

What happened to the serial الطريق الى قندهار The road to Qandahar also financed by Qatar and produced some years back but was taken off-air due to obvious political reasons.

Zarvan, you are starting to irritate us with this BS! Omar and sahaba image is being distorted by some people and Muslims are in dire need to counterattack the misconceptions about them. And nothing better than a great TV show in Ramadan to do the job. People don't read but rather like to watch. Why not to educate and entertian them at the same time for a good cause like this one? Yes, the actors aren't pious but they are the best to do the job since they are professional actors. The most respected, relegious and knowlegable clerics issued fatwas permit carrying on this show. I hope u use your mind before talking next time.

Saw the ad, but will it be Arabic only? Or will there be a dubbed/subbed version too?

indeed it will be dubbed eventually or have subtitled

i will prefer it in Arabic. the context wont be lost. and I can refer to subtitles if I dont understand something.

picture speaks a thousand words

forget what enemies of Islam say. such production should be independent of such things anyway.
in today's time it is important that the dramatisation is as true to the history as possible.

Lol, trying to copy iran.
nothing wrong my dear

Iranian production about Ali ibn Ab Talib's ra time up to the Khawarij has been very nicely picturized. there is much to learn and understand if we let go our sectarian hatred.

I am looking forward to this TV show.
