Oil found in two old gas fields
3D seismic survey points to oil prospects in Titas field too

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Ltd (Bapex) has determined, through a seismic survey, presence of around 150 million barrels of oil in old gas fields of Kailashtila and Haripur in Sylhet.

No less than 40 percent of this small reserve could be commercially produced, said Bapex Managing Director Mortuza Ahmad Faruque.

This implies that around 700 barrels a day could be produced from the two fields under Sylhet Gas Field Company Ltd.

Roughly, seven barrels equal to a tonne.

If the potential was explored, the government could produce around 35,000 tonnes of oil a year from these fields and save a small yet important import cost.

Bangladesh currently imports around 7 million tonnes of oil at a very high rate worth several billion dollars, putting heavy inflationary pressure on the economy.

Besides, the three-dimensional seismic survey conducted last year also pinpointed some new small gas reserves in both these fields that could be tapped into.

A report on this analysis was submitted to Petrobangla Wednesday. The Petrobangla would make it public early next week.

According to the Bapex managing director, the oil of Kailashtila field is light in nature, which is easily extractable, while the Haripur's oil is heavier. Kailashtila's reserve, spread in five to six layers, was almost three times of that in Haripur.

Bapex Managing Director Mortuza Ahmad Faruque notes, “In order to tap into this oil resource, the authorities first need to hire an oil expert as a consultant to guide the government on how to properly produce oil from the two fields.

“Bapex can drill the required wells in both these fields. But we will need a consultant to guide us on how to pump in water or what kind of compression should we use in producing the oil. Besides, we need to know how to tune the process plant to produce oil.

“The Sylhet Gas Field Company now needs to start working on preparing a proposal to tap into these resources.”

Meanwhile, Bapex is analysing results of another three-dimensional seismic survey in Titas, the country's biggest and oldest producing gas field under the Bangladesh Gas Field Company Ltd. The results of this survey would be available by August.

“So far, the signs of Titas' [new prospects] are very good. There are indications of oil and (new) gas,” Faruque pointed out.

Bapex was set to drill its biggest prospect of gas in “Sunetra” field in Sunamganj-Netrakona area in June. Based on studies, the company believes that this field might have two to three trillion cubic feet of gas. The preparation for this drilling took time due to difficulties in mobilising the rig and other heavy equipment through a rough road.

“But now we are all set for the operation,” the managing director said.

Upon completion of the survey's analysis, Bapex said Kailashtila has 1.7 trillion cubic feet of recoverable reserve and the Haripur field 310 billion cubic feet. Bapex found a new gas zone in Haripur with the possibility of hitting another 223 billion cubic feet of gas.

Oil was first discovered in Haripur field back in the late 80's. The oil was thick and the authorities ran a drilling stamp test to pump out around 500 barrels of oil. But they used the technique applicable for gas production, not for oil production. Later the government considered the field commercially not viable and it was abandoned.

Using indigenous gas by-product “condensate”, the Sylhet Gas Field Company Ltd was already producing 3,000 tonnes of octane, petrol, diesel and kerosene a day by setting up a Fractionation Plant in Rashidpur. This translates into an annual production of more than one lakh tonnes of petroleum products, which covers most part of the local octane demands.

Below is the Daily Star link. The recoverable quantity of oil is more than 60 million barrels. Its present market value is more than $6 billion. The new gas finds are about 3.2 trillion cft in almost the same area. Its market value is more than $1.5 billion. So, BAPEX has discovered oil and gas worth about $7.5 billion.

Since these finds are ONSHORE, therefore, by law, BD will not export any of these finds. All of these will be used for domestic consumption by the industries, power plants and household kitchens.

I think we should look for more bigger source and that is bay of Bengal..

With a limited resource at its disposal as well as lack of experience and technology, it may not be possible for BAPEX like BD companies to go after big killings in our BoB. Govt has allocated two of the blocks to ConocoPhillips for exploration. But, drilling was at a standstill because of territorial dispute with the Burmese. Now, Conoco has in its disposal the maximum part of one of the blocks. It has another full block, and it wants govt to allocate six more blocks.

So, Hillary Clinton's BD visit was not at all irrelevant for the USA. Since USA wants its oil companies to drill in the BoB, it does not want to see any Chinese military base in its vicinity. BoB has a lot of gas and methane. Somewhere, I have read that Dick Chenny, the former US Vice-President, said that BD has world's largest oil field that stands at 1 trillion barrels of oil. Chenny was not in power then and he said this when President Clinton came to visit BD.

do u guys think india will intrude? because last time in sylhet oil was found and india forced us not to get the oil and they took it by force.

I think. you are heeding to too much of gossips. How India or any other country can possibly do that? You are giving too much importance to India. These gossips are created out of and then evaporates in the thin air. But, this is the first time I have heard a gossip like this. BD is trying to find oil for the last 60 years, and this is the first time that it has struck oil in good quantity. There are two very insignificant fields in Haripur and somewhere in greater Noakhali.

Bold Part I didn't create gossip. It was from bangladeshi folks.

Anyway the more oil or gas the merrier. By the way, now don't be angry, I wish that bangladesh finds oil and gas after most bangladeshis are educated and conscious about bangladesh's and itz people's interest. and of course when they are civilize.

dude what's ur avator? Lioness pissing on what, pig or what, now that's a nasty habbit pissing on food...

BD imports about $7 billion worth of oil every year. So, the oil we have found is just enough to cover only one year's consumption. It means, if we spread it in 20 years the quantity is only 5% of a year's consumption. Not very significant, really. However, the point is these two small reserves prove that BD has oil that must be found out. BD's history of geological formation in the past indicates a huge presence of oil and gas in this country including BoB.

However, we have found only natural gas so far. Point to be noted, the oil fields that we have discovered this time lie deep below the gas fields. So, oil drilling companies must go down deep to, say, 2 to 4 km from the ground to find out oil.

.
isn't oil always found deep beneath gas?....i read it somewhere, i maybe wrong.

If this accounts for only a years consumption then I wonder if
the retrieving factors are economically feasible. They should not
pull off this treasure right now but only in times of dire needs,
when there are greater troubles at stake.

No, no. Whatever oil and gas resources we have must be dug out. It will contribute to the national economy nad enlarge the base of aconomic activities. $6 biilion is the basic market value of this oil. When it is refined and distributed more values will be added to it, at least, 5 times its basic value. All these values will be added to the national economy. It means many more people will be employed with the input of this small oil.

All the economies of the world expand in this way, little by little and year after year. This is how Japan and all the european countries developed themselves. Bapex, PetroBangla and others need revenues to survive and get new funds to drill new fields.

Many of the economic activities are inter-related. Once the basic activity of producing oil stops, all other related economic activities also will stop. Although at the end the country will be saving only $300 million per year by importing less quantity of oil, but, much more wealth will be accumulated in the country if this money is funneled to the economy via the private sector.
