OGDC finds oil, gas in Hyderabad

.
''Analyst Mohammad Affan Ismail at brokerage BMA Capital commented that the discovery, which stands at 14.02mmcfd of gas and 125bpd of oil would slightly impact the company’s annualised earnings.''

This is such a small amount.

.
In case more gas is not discovered, Pakistan can phase out gas usage in power generation and move towards coal, hydel, nuclear, wind and solar power. CNG usage for cars can also be gradually phased out and replaced with petrol. Additional demand for fertilizer can also be net through imports. That way local production can meet the demand for a longer time to allow development of shale gas.

One poster has already pointed out earlier that Pakistan’s older reservoirs such as Sui, Mari & Qadirpur are fast depleting. You need to continually add new field just to maintain the production level.

Any new find is good news but we must keep the total energy requirement in perspective. For the record, any gas reservoir of less than 1-TCF is considered small. The new discovery of 300 to 400-bilion cft is a small reservoir. Pakistan is short of 1.8-billion cft per day. 300-billion reservoir; assuming you can take all of it out; is barely sufficient for 6 months.

It expected that gas short fall will reach 8-billion cft per day by 2025. Our total gas reserves are about 31- tcf producing about 4.2 –billion cft per day. We not only need to keep our current production level, but also find new reservoirs to increase the production level to 12-billiob cft per day. You need to find at least 4 gas fields of Sui capacity with in next 10 years to come even close.

We must also start importing LNG immediately and start work on fracking tight/shale gas right away. Else, say good bye to Pakistan’s economic well-being.
one point that concerns me is the departure of foreign companies from our country one example to quote would be of recent departure of bhp hillton - another one is Petronas --- we surely are loosing out on the technological advancement, and expertse these foreign comapanies bring along them --- I had the chance to work UEP - and how they worked and then on the same side i had the honor of working with Eni & Schlumberger, huge difference both in terms of expereince and how they operate ---
so think it is important that we should get in JV with more foreign entities and allow them to explore

I doubt Pakistan have any big reserves of gas/oil left to be discovered.

Only hope left is shale gas/ oil.

Many thanks for your observation. Main reason for this is the law & order problem and target killings by the extremists.

Should Chesapeake Energy of US or EnCana of Calgary; two of the major gas producing companies specializing in Fracking; decide to invest in Pakistan. Who is going to stop idiots of Lej & TTP target killing their employees especially if they are Jewish?

This is the primary reasons why I am dead against extremism. Islam that I believe in does not allow suicide bombing and /or target killing of Shia, Sikh, Hindu, Christian or a Jew simply because of their faith. On the other hand political leaders such as Munawar Hassan consider these scums of the earth’ Shaheed’, an indirect way of admiring their murderous ways.

First & foremost condition for economic progress is peace and good governance. I am not for dictators, but unless one is intellectually dishonest, it is hard to deny that on the economic front, military dictatorship periods have been good for the country. This is not because democracy is bad for Pakistan, but only because Pakistan has not been blessed with honest & far sighted democratically elected leaders.

In fact it has always been a dictatorship in the garb of democracy by the leaders far less competent than the Generals. You can see that first act of both the PPP & PML-N in Punjab was to dissolve local bodies in 2008. Despite Supreme Court order and written in the constitution, neither the Federal not the Provincial gov't are prepared to hold the new local bodies election!.

rightly said sir, i had the first hand experience of this while i was in the field, but i think Law & order is not the main reason, i mean look at Iraq & Kurdistan, and yet many major companies are still operating at full capcity in their....
I am of view that other hurdles to face are bureaucratic, imposed by different Govt departments.
Here is one example, where our Petroleum Minister meets Eni's CEO and asks to boost gas production, but no effort was to assist them in handling Community related issues, issues faced during import of Equipment, mostly stuck at the customs, etc etc....
Currently MOL is the only one operating in Karak, and as far as I know they are the only one operating in KPK, we have not touched the central balochistan, and western sindh, area around kirthar range.....
Govt needs to play the main role, we are an emerging market, and we need these companies to stay, rather then, them needing us.....
