We have 1.1 million INSAS in service, it will take time to select new one.

INSAS did a good job for last 20 years, now its time to replace them.
are you kidding me insas is regarded as one of the most worst modern service rifle next to British SA80

. .
Excellent

Couple of observation.

1) Quality and finish looks great, the matt finish is way better than the metallic finish

2) The Metal Magazine is a great change from the Plastic ones, still nitpicking - suggest to have a clear window along the magazine to view the no. of rounds... yes?

3) How easy is it to mechanically change the rifle to be left handed?

4) Since, the person mentions the INSAS, it best guess to say that this is a heavy upgrade of the INSAS correct?, would existing UBGLs can be used?

5) Big Q, time frame for tests, mods asked to be completed and inductions?

Are there more vids?? he did mentioned that he will show the ammo

Not really a design issue but a manufacturing issue. OFB was run be incompetence. The design of the rifle is actually brilliant. It was the manufacturing that was poor. As battle field assault rifle, it did everything required. The rifle did very well considering other rifles. But we only know of its failure because India is for the most part transparent, and needs to get audit reports to Parliament to justify money spent. No news is probably worse. When something gets shoved under the carpet you can be there were a lot of problems.

Damn Im surprised and impressed.... I used to call the other version of Insas crap! They should definitely figure out a way to make this happen

Bro, your border guards are not even using INSAS. They are using AKs.

I believe the 'matte finish' is the result of a phosphate coating. This process is called Parkerizing and is done to improve the metal's resistance to corrosion and help the components survive usual wear & tear of field use better.

2) The Metal Magazine is a great change from the Plastic ones, still nitpicking - suggest to have a clear window along the magazine to view the no. of rounds... yes?

The 20-round box mag is directly taken from an FN FAL (1A SLR) it seems. This makes it pretty heavy even when not counting the 308 round (which itself is heavy). I'd suggest we switch to a plastic polymer magazine by the time the gun makes it to service.

I personally don't like fully transparent magazines...they are too reflective IMO. I'd be happy with an opaque mag with a small transparent slit-window to know when your ammo is about to run out. Like the Magpul PMAG -

3) How easy is it to mechanically change the rifle to be left handed?

Varies from rifle to rifle. An AR15-based design (like the MCIWS) would have been relatively easy to change. Relatively. The two main biggest issues that I can think of on this OFB rifle are the fire selector/safety and the charging handle. The magazine-release is already pretty ambidextrous.

I've read reviews of left-handed FN FAL gun owners (this gun has a lot in common with that) and they seem pretty happy given a bit of getting used to. I don't think even the ejected casings should be much of a problem given the fact the rifle is of a good length.

4) Since, the person mentions the INSAS, it best guess to say that this is a heavy upgrade of the INSAS correct?, would existing UBGLs can be used?

It's basically a 7.62 INSAS with a bit of SLR DNA thrown in.

Existing indigenous 40mm UBGL requires the lower handguard of the INSAS to be removed in order to seat the launcher in (similar to how an M203 is fitted on an M4/M16), so I don't see any reason why it can't be used on the new rifle.

5) Big Q, time frame for tests, mods asked to be completed and inductions?

Don't ask about timeframes and inductions. It is bad karma to do so.

Dunno about IA requesting any mods but as I've noted - the rifle in the vid has a new buttstock compared to what it previously had. So I guess that's something IA requested.

Are there more vids?? he did mentioned that he will show the ammo

None yet. There was the older video of IA officer firing it in a range - check that out in case you didn't already.

The ammo is the usual 7.62x51mm Nato round (.308 winchester)...nothing new to see there, you can find hundreds of videos & info about it on the net.

This project is dead.

Army's new requirement calls for 7.62x51 rifles - which is why OFB developed this new rifle.

ARDE is still working on it. Only way it can fit into IA's requirement is the CQB carbine tender. It'll need to be reduced in length.

I have little faith in this gun winning that tender...I'd be happy if it does though. But I'm content to settle for a Galil ACE-21/23 or an M4CQB.
