Hello all, this thread is partly the result of being inspired by student / climate-activist Greta Thunberg's recent speech and partly by my own concern about the human-created pollution that is destroying the ecology of this planet which at least for the next 15 years will be our main home even if some people move to Mars.

I live in India which houses the most polluted city in the world, Delhi. And I know that India, China and USA are among the most polluting societies in the world.

What I want to present here and start discussion among PDF members is the solutions on how to preserve our ecology and remove the very real global pollution which cannot be rejected even by those who don't believe in Climate Change.

I request PDF moderators / administrators ( @waz , @Dubious and others ) to make this thread sticky because this topic goes beyond things like nationalism, civil wars, regime-change and inter-country wars / rivalries.

My first presented solution is for a gradual global ban on all privately-owned cars and two-wheelers which must be replaced with mass public transport vehicles like buses and for certain occasions like car-taxis. Plus, workplaces and educational institutions must provide bus facility to their employees and students. Not only this, the fuel that will power these vehicles will also have to be ecologically good, whether it be battery-stored or on-the-fly electric generation like the QUANT car. Again, even if ecologically-good fuel systems are used to fuel privately-owned vehicles, the pollution created by mass-production of these vehicles will defeat the very purpose of ecologically-good vehicles. So, Elon Musk is incorrect in pitching privately-owned Tesla cars as replacement to privately-owned petroleum cars.

My second presented solution is for agriculture. Not only is the 60's agricultural generation method harmful to ecology, it is also the cause of diseases like cancer. In the Indian state of Punjab, many farmers suffer from cancers because of the chemical pesticides and insecticides they use on their farms. And then, the traditional system of having agricultural lands in rural areas and consumers mainly in urban areas is also incorrect. What is more scientific is creation of Urban Farms and especially maximum five-storey Vertical Farms. These two solutions, when enabled for every urban neighborhood-level allow food production at literally the door-step. Combine these with Socialist-style Collective Farming and converting rural areas into urban areas ( say, combine the populations of ten villages into one new urban-cultured township ), it all enables ecologically-good food production. And there is the added advantage of converting, especially in South Asia, regressive-cultured villages into a more evolved city life.

My next presented solution is for mobile communication and data consumption ( cell phones, laptops and tablets ). It has become a modern semi-tragedy that so many people are consumed by their silly hunger for owning the latest cell phone and manufacturers providing the consumers with only enough advanced cell phone ( with a small screen ) that will make the consumer bored with the new device in some months and then create a desire to newly buy yet another small-screened cell phone. Instead, what phone manufacturers companies should develop is a mobile device with a rollable screen, like this device shown in the film, Red Planet. The film was released in year 2000. Such a device can be stored on a person in a specially sewn pant / skirt pocket on the leg.

My next presented solution is a simple one. Abolish the world's militaries. Security for people can be provided by police forces. Let the world be governed by simple Direct Democracy Socialism because only True Socialism is the ideology that is truly harmonious with ecology.

Okay, these are what I can write for now. I will write more when I can. I ask the members to please contribute to this important topic.

I also start not to use plastic bag starting this year. I think the use of plastic has become so excessive.

I dont agree with your idea to eliminate military though, I believe that idea is not realistic.

A subject close to my heart and one every sane person should be thinking about.

I think there are different levels at which we can control climate change, ranging from personal choices, to things states can do, to things that need to be done globally.

I think change needs to be made without harming the poor and the working/middle class. I think we all need to accept the way we live our lives will change dramatically.

A few suggestions;

- All nations should try to make the vast majority of their energy (90%) from renewable sources.

- All homes should be properly insulated (focus on new builds) to ensure they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

- We should minimise commuting through e-working. Also where commuting is required we should focus on replacing personal owned cars with very cheap public transport, powered by energy from renewable sources.

get rid of plastics first
and plant more trees
reminds me of an event where my neighbor forcefully got my 60+ year old trees cut in my house, because they were putting up a mess from fallen leaves in his lawn

Climate change is natural. Before 13000 years, there was ice age. If there was no climate change, won't the world still be in ice age? Does this mean it is man made?

Secondly, CO2 level was 0.03% of atmosphere in 1950 and is 0.04% now. Hiw can temperature rise by 1 degree Celsius for just 0.01% increase of CO2? Does this mean that if earth atmosphere had CO2 levels of 0.5%, world temperature would have been higher by ober 45 degree Celsius than what it is now? Isn't that retarded?

About the retarded Girl Greta, just look at how rehearsed her emotions are. These people couldn't even hire a better actor to represent their cause. She appears like a retard who tries to dramatise things cheaply-

these problems we are facing are fruits of capitalism and interest based economy full of greed and injustice which is the system given by west to this world

You might want to read a little on this.

She is generally new to public speaking on the world stage, so her attitude may seem dramatic. But her intention cannot be doubted.

And then, saving the ecology is not just about rising temperatures. Read this article from 2016 when the respectable Bangalore city ( India ) institute, IISc, said that Bangalore will become unlivable in five years. Bangalore once was called Garden City, and now is Garbage City.

Also, part of urban development in India ( and also China ) seems to be what one Indian standup comic said is the Indian solution for traffic problems. Build a flyover. What an unscientific solution that is !!

Well 5 story vertical farms are nice for the herbicide/pesticide reduction but for many countries which live in a snowbelt the energy costs may be prohibitive. For countries near the equator they almost have free food (but probably tons of pests). The US imports a lot of food from South America during the winter months simply because they have excess capacity. This is one reason food is so cheap here.

- We should minimise commuting through e-working.

Yes, that is a good idea.

Secondly, the very idea of "Work" must be redefined. For example, citizens of a certain neighborhood can contribute, in a week, to duties in the Vertical Farm or in the local police station. The education system must provide for a well-rounded education that should teach all aspects of human existence.

Also where commuting is required we should focus on replacing personal owned cars with very cheap public transport, powered by energy from renewable sources.

Your solution reminds me of what the Singaporean Minister for Environment and Water Resources said of Elon Musk about Musk's Tesla car pitch :
Singapore as a message for Elon Musk: Taking mass transit is a better climate-change solution than tooling around in one of his Tesla electric vehicles.

The city state, which has said its efforts to cope with climate change are as crucial as military defence, has prioritised greater use of its trains and buses, Masagos Zulkifli, minister for environment and water resources, said in an interview on Wednesday.
“What Elon Musk wants to produce is a lifestyle,” Zulkifli said when asked about the entrepreneur’s comments.

“We are not interested in a lifestyle. We are interested in proper solutions that will address climate problems.”

So, is there nil food crop production in certain parts of USA in winter ??

@jamahir

That is very good.

I think the use of plastic has become so excessive.

Agreed.

That reminds me of a thread in the Bangladeshis section which was about development in that country of a jute-based alternative to plastic bags. Perhaps @Bilal9 can point to that thread.

I dont agree with your idea to eliminate military though, I believe that idea is not realistic.

It certainly seems unrealistic now but that is the way to go in the near-future.

The US has invested heavily in engineering vegetables and fruits with long shelf lives and technology to freeze foods or dry them out for later reuse. What we can’t do ourselves we’ll import. During certain times of the year a large percentage of the US has a temperature unsuitable for growing some vegetables.

Even when there is a foot of snow outside for months on end you can buy fresh vegetables in the supermarket grown 3000 miles away.

Well, one of the side-effects of doing research on Vertical Farming in cold regions is application in food production on Mars in the near-future. Temperatures on Mars can be +20 Celsius to -153 Celsius at the poles.

So I don't think food production in Vertical Farms in snow areas in USA is impossible. I would say it is just that the economics of such a venture have not allowed people to experiment.
