Odisha boy carries dead mother on bicycle after villagers refuse to help because of caste

I know there is a history of war between tamils and sri lankans but my comment was genreally about south indians. they seem to be the most likeable indians. maybe becuase they feel discriminated for being dark etc compared to the rest of india.

Most Indian Tamils will disagree on that and looking at Tamil Nadu politics its impossible to say they are persecuted.

If they are discriminated for their skin its something they created. Tamil movies themselves have very few dark skinned Tamils. If anything skin colour based discrimination is worse in Tamil movies than Hindi movies

Sad and very sorry state of humanity.
Death is final destination, if the neighborhood cannot respect a death and support the grieved, then neighborhood and society at large had failed the being human and being social.

We as a country still need to do a lot to clear the myths, divisions and raise the education and health services across the country, specially the remote and underprivileged areas.

I also blame the reporter and media, who where there to cover the story but did nothing to support the boy in grieved state to perform final rites. For them its just been a story to get eyes of readers.

Wait for correct news to come in. Many such news such as Dalit killed for keeping mostech or keeping horse etc have been proved utterly wrong.

As young Saroj pushed the cycle carrying his mother's body down a crumbling lane, there was little to distract him from his thoughts but the sound of his own feet scraping against the loose gravel.

Covered from head to toe, Janki Sinhania's corpse was laid out across the seat on she might once have ridden pillion, and kept in balance by a stiff makeshift bunk.

When it was time to conduct her last rites, not even one of her neighbours in Karpabahal, a village in Odisha, wanted to help Saroj carry her body to the cremation ground.

Their reason: she belonged to a lower caste.

So Saroj, 17, carried her body on the bicycle for four to five kilometres.

He is said to have buried his mother in a forest.

Janki Sinhania, who was 45, died when she went to fetch water and fell on the ground.

Her husband -- a man from Sundergarh district whom she married ten years ago -- is also dead. She stayed in her paternal village with her son and daughter after his death.

During Janki Sinhania's final journey, Saroj stood and answered questions in an unpaved village street, his head covered in a dirty towel.

When he was asked whom the body belonged to, he spoke in a quiet voice.

"My mother."

Shame on you for denying the caste based problems in India. Your views are exactly what is wrong with India today.

If you have some humanity, you will see how sad this is. A 17y/o dealing with so much tragedy.

I remember when my pet died at the age of 13 or 14 I was crying so much while burying it, now imagine this guy he lost his mother, what would be his feelings.

Please think beyond nationality or ethnicities on such tragic issues.

Tamils are some of the nicest and most educated indians i have ever come across. Never had any ill feelings from them or vice versa compared to the rest of indians.

maybe because they are proscuited community in india thats why they come accross like that.

Tamils like Kashmiris are a prosecuted lot, the reason is racial i.e Aryan vs Dravidian (while in KAshmir its religious). Tamil Dravidians are culturally and racially different to rest of so called Aryan Indians

The conflict between Tamils and Sinhala in Sri lanka (as in India), is also racial. Aryan Sinhalas vs pagan Dravidian Tamils , who according to Sinhala Buddhist text, need to be driven out of their pure Buddhist land - Sri Lanka

The first is that they belong to the "Aryan Sinhala race" (as distinct from the Tamil Dravidians) and that Sri Lanka is their homeland; the second is that they are defenders of the Buddhist faith, the mission of protecting Buddhism having been entrusted to them by Buddha himself; and the third is that Sri Lanka is the home for the Sinhala language. This self-perception has created a virulent form of Sinhala-Buddhist supremacism.

"India's Hindu fascists look to the Ramayana to justify their supremacy, Sri Lanka's Sinhalese chauvinists look to the Mahavamsa", Ramayana story is believed to have roots in the exploits of a culture hero who carried the Aryan civilization south, conquering the Dravidian peoples who were represented in the epic as "demons".

Lawrence J Swier, in his book Sri Lanka: War-Torn Island, had this to say about the damage done by Anagarika Dharmapala (Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinist who was an ex Christian named Don David Carolis ) :

'Perhaps more than any other person, Dharmapala was responsible for popularizing the faulty impression that Tamils and Sinhalese had been deadly enemies in Sri Lanka for nearly 2000 years. He often quoted Mahavamsa as if it were a completely factual account, and his favourite passages were those that made the Tamils sound like pagan invaders who were running the island. Much of his preaching and writing was racist. Dharmapala insisted that the Sinhalese were racially pure Aryans – by which he meant that they had racial ties with the North Indians, Iranians and Europeans, He contrasted the Sinhalese racial line with that of the Dravidian Tamils, which he claimed was inferior.'

Sinhala Buddhists and Indian Hindus abide by the same fascist Aryan ideology of hate and supremacy

Tamils are invaders to Sri Lanka.

They have no homeland in Sri Lanka.

The sooner they go back to their homeland of Tamil Nadu, the better.

Tamil Hindu supremacism has no equal - giving the world suicide bombers and child soldiers, as well as the bra bomb and pregnant suicide bombers.

Butchered, massacred and ethnically cleansed the Tamil speaking Muslims simply because they were Muslim.

As an atheist, all I can find to think is,"May God help my nation. No one else can."

Yes, and no.

This ethical dilemma has confronted journalists for centuries now, not just decades: how ethical is it to report, and to abstain from intervention?

Wait for correct news to come in. Many such news such as Dalit killed for keeping mostech or keeping horse etc have been proved utterly wrong.

Unfortunately, many - too many - have been proved utterly right.

Your attitude needs correction.

I believe any decent person would have helped.

They could've asked him questions as journalists WHILE helping him out as HUMANS.

Whenever this debate comes up, the incident of a child in Africa crawling to a help center comes to mind.

This was a famous story that became a hot topic for this intervention or no intervention debate...and I'm of the opinion that journalists SHOULD help if they can. Being a journalist doesn't mean u seize to be a human. At least if I was in that situation...I don't think I would be able to keep myself from helping.

Personally, I agree with you. However, every journalist has to make up his or her mind on this individually, as human beings, and whatever anyone else not present may say, they have to take their own decisions on this on the spot.

I really do agree with you...it bugs me a lot about journalists/news crews sometimes. You have to use common sense and decency...but definitely report on the story too for sure. It is a balance. It should not always be extreme choice of intervention only when lives at stake etc...I think intervention is justified far before it.

Honestly I posted the earlier post in this thread to take my mind off of the original story. It is really quite saddening and no words can really do it justice.

Joe i agree with you totally that any decent person would have helped. It shows there were no decent people there. Shame. Hope the boy leave the area.
