A clear-cut American support for Israel's security and for establishing a Palestinian state only through bilateral negotiation and not by international coercion. :yahoo:

Obama: UN resolutions won't bring Israel-Palestinian peace

U.S. president addresses UN General Assembly, makes last-ditch effort to prevent Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas from submitting request to UN Security Council for full Palestinian membership on Friday.

U.S. President Barack Obama said Wednesday that peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will not come about through resolutions at the United Nations, issuing a warning to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of his UN Security Council bid on Friday.

Addressing world leaders at the opening of a UN General Assembly session, Obama put the onus on the two sides to break a yearlong impasse and get back to the negotiating table.

"There is no short cut to the end of a conflict that has endured for decades. Peace is hard work. Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations," Obama said.

"Ultimately, it is Israelis and Palestinians who must live side by side," Obama continued. "Ultimately, it is Israelis and Palestinians – not us – who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them: on borders and security; on refugees and Jerusalem."

Obama stressed that he believed in an independent Palestine, but one that will be achieved through negotiations with the Israelis.

"One year ago, I stood at this podium and called for an independent Palestine. I believed then – and I believe now – that the Palestinian people deserve a state of their own. But what I also said is that genuine peace can only be realized between Israelis and Palestinians themselves."

"Israel deserves recognition. It deserves normal relations with its neighbors. And friends of the Palestinians do them no favors by ignoring this truth, just as friends of Israel must recognize the need to pursue a two state solution with a secure Israel next to an independent Palestine."

Obama will follow up his speech with separate meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders as he seeks to coax both parties back to direct peace talks.

At the same time, U.S. officials are conceding that they most likely will not be able to prevent Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas from moving forward with a request to the UN Security Council for full Palestinian membership.

Recognizing that Abbas seems intent to proceed, Obama is expected to privately ask the Palestinian leader to essentially drop the move for statehood recognition after Abbas delivers a formal letter of intent to the UN on Friday.

Ugh - that about sums up my reaction. I know full well that Obama is only doing this because in our corrupt, Israel-coddling political system, to do otherwise would be political suicide. But that doesn't make it much easier to stomach it.

It is the worst form of self-destructive hypocrisy for the United States to be this blindly pro-Israel. It's not good for America, it's not good for Israel, and it's not good for Palestine. And given the immense power this conflict and our hypocritical role in it gives to anti-democratic extremists, it's not good for the world as a whole.

The only individuals who benefit are cynical GOP sycophants pandering to an ignorant, gullible American public, and the extremist Israeli right wingers who would rather wage jihad on their neighbors than ever see peace emerge.
-----------------------------------------

Regardless of what Obama tells them the rest of the world already knows the pathetic truth about why we are, once again, the only nation in the world supporting another injustice against the Palastinians by the Israelis. The truth they know is that American politicians are so corrupted by and afraid of the Israeli lobby in the U.S. that they will never offend them.

This is true whether it's the U.S., in a time of a supposed defecit crisis, borrowing money from China to GIVE to Israel or whether it's the U.S. supporting countless acts of aggression by Israel against it's Palastinian population and even if it means putting the interests of the people of the U.S. second to those of Israel.

The parasitic relationship between Israel and the U.S. is both shameful and disgraceful.
------------------------------------------------

Let's be honest about this. Obama's current stance reflects the politics of the next election. Hawkish Jewish voters are cementing their allegiance and money with Republicans and middle-class Democratic Jewish voters have grown disillusioned with Obama. But in the court of world opinion, which widely celebrates the progress to democracy unfolding in the Arab Spring, the Palestinians truly deserve self-determination and statehood. As a secular Jewish watcher of decades of strife in the Middle East, I can't think of a better investment in long-term peace than allowing the creation of a Palestinian state. While the issue is complex and the divide still bitterly deep, this is the best way to force true long-term responsibility on the Palestinians and Israelis. It is the right thing to do and is the single biggest step the U.N. can take to advance world peace.

Few days back, the number of countries who were supporting the bid has exceeded the quota set by the UN for the recognition of a state in the UN.

But as everyone knows that in many places the power in a way or other is in the hands of the tyrants and hypocrites.

Same applies to the state which will Veto this bid whether it be Muslims or non-Muslims, Arabs or non Arabs.

VETO POWER HAS TO GO  US is neither a super power nor a honorable nation to hold VETO power - its administered by tyrants

I just want to see what the Saudis are going to do. America has never been an honest mediator between the israelis and the Palestinians. So, what america is doing is quite expected.

America and Obama took a very bold and moral stand to support Israel against most of world countries. Thank god the US is the contemporary superpower.

The US believe strongly that Israel as a liberal progressive and democratic state is the one who should enjoy full backing against all the reactionary forces in the Middle East, the Muslim world and in the third world which comprise mainly from failed states. Thank god that outside of the halls of the UN and beside of babbling against Israel there is nothing much all this failed states do against Israel. :usflag:

You guys are jumping the gun.. what you are talking about may surely happen.. But its not gonna happen in your or my life time..

Countries dont just roll over and die..

If Pakistan can survive all the muck it has been thru in last 10 year with a screwed up economy, USA is on a different plane all together.. So while you may still get your wish, its just too soon to get the bubbly out of the chiller .. :)

Neither US is going to bankrupt nor Israel relies on US charity. Indeed, Israel is more self dependent than most of the countries.

Don't hope too much because you will be sad at end.

That is what you and your kinds are babbling about in the last 60 years, but in vain.

Israel is here to stay, and so is the US. All your wishful thinking about its collapse are too early.

I wish for the US all the best as the unquestionable leader of the free world and democratic nations.
