Obama's approval rating surges

U.S. President Barack Obama is seeing a surge in support among voters, with poll numbers released Tuesday suggesting his approval rating is nearing the 50 percent mark.

According to a national survey done by CNN/ORC International Poll, 49 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, up five points from last month, with 48 percent saying they disapprove, down six points from mid-November. The 49 percent approval rating is Obama's highest since May, when his number hit 54 percent after the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The rise of the president's popularity is in part attributed to the partisan battle over extending the payroll tax cut.

"President Barack Obama's approval rating appears to be fueled by dramatic gains among middle-income Americans," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "The data suggest that the debate over the payroll tax is helping Obama's efforts to portray himself as the defender of the middle class."

The two parties have been fighting a bitter war over extending the popular tax cuts. After Senate approval of a long-awaited measure to extend the payroll tax cuts and federal jobless benefits for two months, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Tuesday scuttled it.

Obama, in a surprise visit to the White House press briefing room after the House vote, urged House Republicans to vote on the short-term Senate bill and avoid a tax hike for 160 million American workers at the start of next year.

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International from Dec. 16 to Dec. 18, with 1,015 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Obama is a fool who has no clear vision. His foreign affairs maneuvering is juvenile. Domestically, not much better, with disastrous financial decisions causing mayhem.

Our pop culture has made traits like smooth talking and nice suits more important than intellect when we select our leaders.

I can't wait to see him go in 2012.

Im really grateful for the honesty in the honesty in your post. I also have exactly the same sentiments regarding matters in the US. Half the problem is knowing and accepting errors. Obama is an error. The mass populaces in the US have the same sentiments like you - lets hope for peace and the best for the US in 2012 - we could all do with getting on in a peaceful manner!!

It looks like the Republican candidates aren't very charismatic.

Unless you could pit Ron Paul, but his ideology doesn't match with the US Global Strategy. :coffee:

Exactly the reason why democracy sucks and is a failure big time in the long run..

better to have good governance with long term goals of stability.

I think the national leader should be elected by the committee within the government, not by people.

Since the ordinary people are usually not perceptive and rational enough to choose a rightful leader for their own nation.

I like Paul's "small government" model. I like 80% of his foreign policy in that the U.S. needs to pull back and allow world events to run their course without interference. A rock solid DEFENSE is what we need. But Paul has a few ideas that are truly loony and he is unelectable.

As far as the Republican candidates, I'm not thrilled with any of them. I think Gingrich has the best brain of them all. The rest are talking manikins in a nice suit.

That makes little sense. We've talked about this before. The government known as a "benign dictatorship" can be (in theory) one of the best, but for every benign dictator, you get 99 power hungry idiots. So the question becomes, "how do you select leaders?" By blood? Dark-ages garbage. You've got to elect people to represent you. The trick is to have those casting the votes be informed.

What I'm going to say will not be popular, nor will it ever happen, but I believe the ability to vote should be earned. How? Pass a written test. The contents of the test would be crucial. A prospective voter should be aware of domestic and international affairs, should have a solid grasp of important economic issues, trade, alliances etc. A voter should pass a basic geography test.

The test would weed out apathetic people who can't be bothered, and likewise it'll eliminate bubble-gum (bubble-headed) voters more concerned with Lady Gaga than international affairs.

Just being 18 years old and a pulse; no. The USA made a mistake in going from 21 to 18 for a voting age.

Anyway, i think Obama will be re-elected in 2012 just as i thought Bush was going to win the 2004 election.

In the history of the US, the most charismatic candidate always got the nod from majority, and Bush junior is a charismatic right-wing cowboy and Obama is just another charismatic left-wing liberal.

Could you be more specific on your displeasure?Which foreign policy do you find fault with?I think he showed remarkable restraint with Egypt and entered Libya only once he was assured of quick gains and that too without any troop assignment. The rest of the engagements he directly inherited from the past governance. He is also a sensible leader, willing to talk to Iran even at inopportune moments rather than the "Shoot em first, take names later" being preached by the current Republican contenders.

Of course, He didn't turn out to be a miracle worker as Liberals painted him out to be....then again no one ever is.

I think an "action" against a nuclear "terror harboring" nation to save American lives may be a strategy being thought up to boost his ratings further. Especially before the re-elections.

What Obama has done Bush couldn't do in his lifetime as a president cuz traditional democrats would have pounded him. He bailed out corporations and gave them 100s of billions out of taxpayers pockets, n fuked the American ppl in the a$$ for another decade. Now, who do you think is going to be funding his election and marketing campaigns?? He's bound to be re-elected. He'll play the race card once again against his opponents cuz they're all white.

Youth were a major factor in Obama's victory, however they are totally disenchanted and disillusioned with him...

Bush was the least Charismatic leader yet he still got re-elected. Charisma doesn't play much in american politics, what they can do for the corporations matters a lot more. Corporations know how to manipulate public opinions all too well...
