My good friend the The last 20 yrs of "opening up" has brought out more poor people out of poverty than the first 50 yrs of "Socialism" .... If Obama is saying something doesnt automatically mean its bad for us .... look at the pros and cons of it !!!
Firstly Socialism does not automatically mean lack of private enterprise(If it is, then liberalization would have been unconstitutional. And Nehru's brand of Socialism is not the only one out there). Nordic countries like Sweden and Norway also have socialist systems in place. Yet they are developed and have a healthy private industry. Also you are confusing privatization with opening up sectors of economy for foreign investment. If India opens up airline industry for foreigners I will be happy about it. Because it will create new jobs. Even privatizing Railways will improve efficiency. But what is the point of allowing FDI in retail?! They will employ the sons of our own pan shops as employees and at a lower salary than what they would have earned by managing their family shop. People like Obama would like India to privatize only because, that would be a first step in allowing foreign investment, not because they are immensely interested in the well-being of India.

Where as at home, Obama keeps encouraging private sector while attacking the outsourcing industry, which is a form of Indian investment. I did not make fun of his comments because they are automatically bad. But they are hypocritical and self-serving.

Yeah but this socialism is damaging us, limiting innovation and destroying competition. This protectionist attitude whether it is the guaranteed job for inept government employees, callous babus or even for that matter sluggish bureaucrats. If we have to become another Hong Kong or Singapore, we must get out of this "guaranteed and no accountability" nonsense. Remember that a healthy competition is always better for the country. It shouldn't be too much but enough to spur growth.

Again I support protectionism from foreign investment in sectors like retail, banking and finance. But privatization of government monopolies is a different thing. We as Indians should ask for it. Not some foreign government who wants to push its products to us.

Most inefficiencies in our country would end if we just let Indian private players in. Look at our net speeds, even as some countries have 100 Mbps speeds, we are still calling 256Kbps as broadband in India. The problem is not that Indian players don't have the capacity. But the problem is that BSNL won't share its last mile infrastructure with anyone even if by charging a fee. By letting in foreign investment in this space we achieve nothing but loose control over our resources.

If the voices on the left are strong, then our leaders can show them as reason for the controls on foreign investment. So we should not completely lose our left wing. The left also makes sure we don't end up in a situation like the USA where the rich people pay lower taxes than the poor. There is nothing romantic and competitive in losing a welfare state. And a welfare state need not mean government control and bureaucracy.

Can I ask guys why Indians in general are so quick to take offense? I mean a lot of these criticisms aren't about putting India down they are just the truth. I have found that Indians seem to take offense to everything, how can India improve as a nation if everything is taken as offensive?

India is second largest producer of fruits and vegetables but does not have facilities to store them and so farmers is taking the hit now as they could not reach distant market. This would mean many of these produce perish and farmers are not benefitted by it. Large retail stores can offset this wastage as they can bring in cold storage facilities and allow more efficient distribution of fruits and vegetables.(India has cold storage facilities today but is inadequate).

The mom and pop stores does not have technology to improve retail supply chains and so create artificial demands and price rise today on various products. Why do customers have to pay high prices for inefficiencies in today's retail market?

middlemen benefit the most today as opposed to farmers - it will improve the profit margin for farmers while keeping the price competitive for customers. So these two groups will get benefitted.

All these have contributed to food inflation. Allowing retail will offset the inflation.

And lastly, FDI is needed to offset negative balance of trade as we import lot more than we export.

So the question is impact for 4 crores of Indian population vs rest.

Btw, Indian Americans earn way more than Pakistani American and Asian American so this does tell us who runs more laundry shops, halal shops, fast food joints etc..

We need to look at our Econimic policy and maintain good growth rates.
