I knew we produce a lot of legal drugs being the world's second largest pharmaceutical industry.
Never knew about the illegal ones.
Some of the reasons why i think India made it to that list is:
1.A lot of drugs banned and considered illegal in the west are still in use in India.
2.When have such a large industry, obviously a lot of fake copies and imitations of those drugs will pop up.
I think Obama is talking about ClassIV drugs (cocaine, heroine, etc) banned drugs used elsewhere but not the US aren't in that class. One reason I think India may have made the list is because of its pseudoephedrine production. Pseudoephedrine and ephedrine are major pre-cursors in the product of methamphetamine, which has become the biggest problem drug in the US.
Pseudoephedrine and ephedrine are both legitimate drugs that are found in cold medicine and body-building supplements. India and China's pharmaceutical industry is where the source of illicit pre-cursor comes from. 1 kg of Pseudoephedrine retails for $68 dollars in China or India but will sell for $10,000 a kg in Mexico where the major meth labs are setup.
Oh and 1 kg of meth sells for $100,000 on the street. With margins like that drug dealers will take any risk to make and sell the stuff.
