NEW DELHI: India and the United States are likely to expedite during US President Barack Obama's visit discussions on joint production of electromagnetic system to smoothen takeoff and landing of fighter jets on board India's indigenously developed aircraft carrier.

Officials said India is keen to jointly develop Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) with the US for the aircraft carrier that is under production in Kochi.

Frank Kendall, the US undersecretary of defence for acquisition, technology and logistics, who is arriving ahead of Obama, will discuss with his Indian counterparts the possibility of joint production of defence items including EMALS, officials said, adding there is a possibility that EMALS might be one of the items where chances of joint production are high.

India currently operates two aircraft carriers, one stationed along its eastern coast and the other along the western coast.

EMALS is a system under development by the US Navy using a linear motor drive instead of the conventional steam piston drive. Kendall, who is visiting India after the Russian defence minister came calling, is expected to give momentum to the Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI), which promotes collaboration in defence technology and enables co-production and co-development of critical defence system.

Besides EMALS, Kendall's discussions will focus on joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles and systems for the C-130 military transport aircraft built by Lockheed Martin Corp. Some projects could be announced after the summit meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Obama, officials indicated. India has received five C-130Js built by Lockheed Martin and it has placed orders for six planes, parts of which will be delivered by 2017 and the jet planes will be delivered by 2017.< ..

DTTI will be a critical aspect of the renewed defence pact that is expected to be signed during Obama's visit.

The India-US defence framework agreement, which expires this year, was signed in the US in 2005 by the then defence minister Pranab Mukherjee and his US counterpart Donald Rumsfeld in the George W Bush administration.

The new framework is likely to enhance the bilateral defence partnership by stepping up joint military exercises and through more in-depth intelligence-sharing, maritime security, among other issues.

This would be a very mutually beneficial partnership. The EMALS system currently has a reliability issue, India can help solve this while positioning itself for the future by gaining technical experience with the system and ensuring it actually works when the IN builds its next aircraft carrier. Good for both sides.

I'd welcome any help and expertise India can provide as we deepen our defense, political and economic ties. Hope something substantial gets done in the coming months!

And though we don't converge too much, our nations share defense interests and a desire to maintain a comprehensive role in East Asia. I look forward to continued US-Indian cooperation in Japan, Australia and Vietnam.

Small steps lead to large ones, please get these deals done!

Obama's visit to India and not to Pakistan is a slap on the aspirations and demands of Pakistanis that the relationship between India and America be limited if they want a Pakistan that is on their side.

Refusal to deal with Pakistani concerns and total indifference to the Pakistani state will only weaken the United States. US has abandoned us in the past after we were used as a pawn to defeat the Soviets. Once that was done and the US did not need us anymore we suffered under the Presler Amendment where military and in many cases civilian ties were stopped.

I have no doubt in my mind the US will do this again and at that time it is my hope that we have China on our side.

We have a problem with terrorism too and should eliminate bigotry wherever we may see it. We have to make massive efforts in this field to get rid of our reputation as terrorist hub. Down with terrorists and may they suffer and die.

You would do well to try to get India to your side rather than running after US or China all the time.
You want aid ? We give aid too.
You hatred of India, irrational or otherwise, is the main reason of your problems.

i doubt india will have anything ground breaking to contribute to something as cutting edge as EMALS

Does the label of joint development help India circumvent the intrusive US checks that would be required if it was a simple sale

It will weaken Pakistan far more.

So despite knowing this and having past experience in great powers casting Pakistan aside your prescription to being abandoned by the US is to jump into bed with another larger power?

This is only going to end one way....

we are trying to move away from trying to seek parity between India and pakistan. American president cant go to china as a single trip... why not to India. Why tag pakistan along in the trip just because its nearby.
US president can always plan a visit separately(which requires careful planning by both pakistan and USA diplomats).

It looks more like the author is describing the Indian hope on joint developments (including transfer of technology), while the US is actually only talking about joint production (diverting offsets). That however still shows the difference of policies and point of views, which will remain the key limiting factor for defence deals with eachother. For EMALS however, it would a pretty interesting chance to finally get the US approval for catapults at all, no matter what kind.

No of course not, we were able to reduce the restrictions to an extend, but still any US arm will have frequent checks.

The delink between India and Pakistan happened a long time ago, it is taking time for a few Pakistanis to catch on.

US should identify the best Indian engineers and offer visa for them to immigrate to America.

You cant demand anything from US.
Because the aid and support is flowing in one way not two way.

Bhai Jaan . It's not only us. But lot of other countries too. Including Iran which can easily be Pakistan friend . Problem facing Pakistan is their own policies which failed even in cold war too. Non state actors are not neede for you. All nations moved on from it as it's counter productive . Lots can be done in Pakistan . Only growing economy will be respected by other nations as they will also benefits. What will US benefit from Pakistan ? Other than eliminating terror groups which aims US ? . I think Bangladesh is also doing well with their gdp and investments. Look at north Korea and South Korea ? US and Cuba ? Cuba might be a smaller than US but they might had grown along with other neighbours if they were not played as a puppet of Soviet. Hope new policies will be brought in Pakistan so we all can grow together . Good u rely on China but be careful they are not trust worthy. Their growth is also slowing down in future so they might tilt to centre to have wider trade to help themself .
