What will it take for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak out about the mounting violence against India’s religious minorities? Attacks at Christian places of worship have prompted no response from the man elected to represent and to protect all of India’s citizens. Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims who have been coerced or promised money. Mr. Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right.

Recently, a number of Christian churches in India have been burned and ransacked. Last December, St. Sebastian’s Church in East Delhi was engulfed in fire. Its pastor reported a strong smell of kerosene after the blaze was put out. On Monday, St. Alphonsa’s Church in New Delhi was vandalized. Ceremonial vessels were taken, yet collection boxes full of cash were untouched. Alarmed by the attacks, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has urged the government to uphold the secular nature of India and to assure its Christians they are “protected and secure” in their own country.

There is also concern about the mass conversions. Last December, about 200 Muslims were converted to Hinduism in Agra. In January, up to 100 Christians in West Bengal “reconverted” to Hinduism. Hard-line Hindu nationalist groups, like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (V.H.P.) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (R.S.S.), make no secret of their support for a “homecoming” campaign designed to “return” non-Hindus to the fold. More than 80 percent of Indians are Hindu, but Pravin Togadia of the V.H.P. says his organization’s goal is a country that is 100 percent Hindu. The only way to achieve that is to deny religious minorities their faith.

The V.H.P. is reportedly planning a mass conversion of 3,000 Muslims in Ayodhya this month. The destruction of the Babri Mosque there in 1992 by Hindu militants touched off riots between Hindus and Muslims across India that left more than 2,000 people dead. The V.H.P. knows it is playing with fire.

Mr. Modi has promised an ambitious agenda for India’s development. But, as President Obama observed in a speech in New Delhi last month: “India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith.” Mr. Modi needs to break his deafening silence on religious intolerance.

. . . . . .
Mass conversions are not forceful and hence not illegal so Modi does not have any moral obligation to break his silence.Conversion of Hindus into Muslims/Christians(Mostly Christians) has been going on in India from the time before Independence mostly by luring gullible people,so NYT should probably worry more about unregistered funds pouring into India from Western countries for Missionaries 'good work' ,Instead of fooling there readers into trying them to convince that Hindu militants are burning or ransacking churches(of which all we know, they could be Muslims or even Christians) which no proof exists and thus we Western Christians are so much morally superior.

This an odd headline. There was no slamming, maybe a request to say something but I'm not sure what can be said. None of the church attacks have been proven as the work of Hindu groups, the police has dismissed some as robberies & one as 3 drunk guys doing something. How do they expect Modi to condemn that? Nor can he condemn the "Ghar Wapsi" because as the editorial itself claims, the most that can be charged against the organisers is that they are indulging in coercion and offering money. Hardly an earth shattering crime. Certainly not something that requires Prime Ministerial intervention. Mr.Modi might have privately expressed his displeasure but that's pretty much all that he can do. For now.

Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims who have been coerced or promised money.

Sirji if you believe Muslims are being persecuted then why the Muslim share in total population has gone up from 13.4% to 14.2%?

Absolutely Admin.
Fate of minorities in India is zealed that is why they increase from below 10 to 14.2 % od our billion population(according to last census) .
But you nation was sooo successful in protecting minority rights ,we can see that when minorities find their way in to India and alsotheir share in population reduced from arpund 10+ to below 1%.

On topic : Foreign media should stay away from our internal affairs. This is none of their business.Neither our leaders nor our media didnt pass any comments about the discrimination of blacks in US include Ferguson protests.
Anti - national activities of Christian.missionaries will surely cut down no matter what .Theirdads in US can cry but that is not going to help them.

.
Not sure about the Muslims in the army, but Skihs form only 2% of Indian Population and Still 15% Soldiers and 20% officers in Indian Army

.
Does their % of population matches favorably with their % in Indian Armed Forces, Cabinet, Govt, education and parliament even?

As far as i Know there is no restriction for any community on any of those areas mentioned by you......If they wish to join they can, but then if their interests are different then, nothing can be done.......There are several other communities which also are not present in those areas
