If you're building one to match or exceed a console, here's some important info and their cost:

RAM

You're going to want a minimum of 6 GB RAM, but most likely 8 gbs. Anything greater then 8gbs of RAM and you really aren't going to notice a difference in performance. You can get a 2x4 set up for 40 USD at Newegg:

It's best to use a dual channel approach - this being two 4 gb cards instead of one 8 gb card - single channel has around a 7% drop-off in performance versus dual channel.

GPU

Anything GTX950 or higher is going to give you superior graphics to consoles - the GTX950 goes for about 160 USD:

I'd recommend at least a GTX960 or comparable AMD card. Try for at least 3 gbs of VRAM.

PSU

You'll need a PSU with a minimum of 200w overhead to accommodate for other components.

I use something similar to this one, but so long as you know the power requirements of your GPU + 200, you should be able to find the right one for you.

CPU

For the processor, to get console quality performance you're going to need at least an i5 (possibly a late gen i3 if your VRAM and RAM or capable enough), but more likely an i7.

Mid-model i5s, 4000 series, run for about 200 USD.

Other stuff

You'll also want cooling systems, a motherboard if you bought your processor without one - be mindful of the chipset of your CPU and GPU or you could end up buying parts that don't fit the motherboard- you'll need a tower and a wireless chipset and a storage device, most probably an SSD.

The tower's an unsung, but important part. It needs to have room for all the components plus cooling. Considering CPUs and GPUs come in different sizes as they get more powerful - the GTX960 being several inches smaller then the GTX970 which is smaller then the GTX980 - it might be best to pick your components first and then find a tower to fit them all, preferably one with good ventilation to help with cooling.

Have 96 GB in my workstation with 2x Xeon 5670 six-cores running Linux.
When I run my little application (it runs for an hour and a half) it generates about
60 GB of data, so I thought a ramdisk would be nice.
It turned out that the ramdisk only shaved a minute from the run time compared to a 24GB system.
2 x 15k RPM SAS disks in a striped RAID configuration gives the same performance as an SSD.

One of CP Professors Beat you here. I am not exactly sure how much does he have but i m sure as heck its 512+GB ram , and he told us about half a dozen things he uses that for which effectively went over our heads.

As I said, my disks combined with the linux disk cache are so good that there was no noticeable
difference compared to a 48GB system.

I don't think it's a typo. Nvidia spends a lot of its revenue on R&D. In 2014 they spent nearly 1/3 of their total revenue on semiconductor R&D:
