Nuclear Artillery has been Extensively developed by US with considerable work by Russia as well.

Coprs of Artillery has been experiementing with Depleted Uranium shells. Would like to Open a thread for much more inputs from any Arty Officer.

Don't know much but with the current line of breeder reactors coming up, India will have a huge stockpile of dirty bombs/Shells.

Depleted Uranium is a very dense materiel suitable for armour piercing/bunker bursting role as it is denser than lead. There is very little 'nuclear' about DU which has a lesser percentage of fissile material than what is naturally available.

Nuclear artillery, OTOH, implies nuclear projectiles using standard artillery guns for delivery. nuclear shells specially designed to be fired from artillery guns of 155mm calibre or higher. These are, by definition, tactical nuclear weapons. The two things are different.

Even the A-10's 30mm gun fires depleted uranium rounds. But they are NOT nuclear

..... of dirty bombs/Shells.

The word dirty bomb is associated with terrorists. It means radioactive material not sufficient enough to reach critical mass but just enough to poison lets say poison a city's water supply.

You want India to have that ?

Sunny Jim...you cant take all the credit.
It is thought that between 17 and 20 countries have weapons incorporating depleted uranium in their arsenals. They include the U.S., the UK, France, Russia, China, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Pakistan, Thailand, Iraq and Taiwan.[citation needed] DU ammunition is manufactured in 18 countries. Only the US and the UK have acknowledged using DU weapons.[35]

It was suggested in a 1999 UK MoD document that India was developing DU weapons in the early 90s. If this is the case, this was most likely for India’s domestically produced Arjun tank, which is fitted with a 120mm rifled gun and bespoke ammunition. Little technical information is available about this ammunition so this claim cannot be substantiated.

I would, personally, like India to have everything that can be used to neutralize the enemy, from a dirty bomb to an invisible soldier, so to speak.

Although I do agree with your contention that a dirty bomb is somewhat useless for a professional army.

Are you forgetting 62 Debacle. 1987 General Sundarjee and pushed Chinese Back.

We need to take revenge of 62

We have other more important things to do.

I would rather worry about the 2 million children who die of malnutrition every year in our country.

Whatever we are currently doing to modernise our military is enough for our defence needs.

Like Bill Clinton once famously said, "It's the Economy, stupid!".

You Keep on Dreaming of Economy.

We need to take more balanced approach and maintain Deterrence posture
