NSG learns from 26/11, to upgrade its firepower

New Delhi: Learning from its 60-hour gunbattle during the 26/11 Mumbai Terror attacks, the National Security Guard (NSG) is all set to upgrade its equipment and weapon profile.

Having already moved on procuring body-worn video and audio bugs, mini-remotely operated vehicles and real time x-ray viewing system almost immediately after the Mumbai attacks, this elite commando force is now in the process of procuring night-sight equipment for its SIG (SWAT) assault rifles, laser listening devices and light support weapons.

Sources said procurement of these equipments was at the top of the force's agenda following an in-depth analysis of the force's strengths and weaknesses during the "debriefing" following the Mumbai operations. While NSG officials maintained that some of these equipments were already available with the force, they admitted that there was fresh impetus to plans to procure the best available, and in sufficient numbers.

So, now the force is looking to procure as many as 128 night-sight devices for its SIG (SWAT) assault rifles, 146 units of light support weapons and eight laser listening devices.

The night-sight devices NSG is looking for are essentially the ones that can be mounted on a rifle, not heavier that two kg, have a non-reflective surface, have shock-proof optics to sustain prolonged recoil, are water resistant, have a zoom facility and can detect a man standing at 300 metres on starlit night without moon. "We also want these devices to have an image intensifier technology," an official said. Sources said the need for this device was felt greatly during the Mumbai operations and this point figured prominently in the debriefing.

The laser listening device which the Black Cats now want is a laser-based audio monitoring system that can allow surveillance operation from a stand off distance of at least 400 metres. "The device should be able to pick up sounds from a minimum of 400 metres," the official added.

As for the light support weapons, the NSG is scouting for 5.56mm x 45mm and 7.62mm x 51mm weapons having a minimum effective range of 1,000 metres and minimum recoil. "Simply put, we want light guns that can incapacitate a person at a distance of 1,000 metres," the official added.

NSG to induct hi-tech weapons, to focus on heliborne ops

New Delhi, March 09: More than three months after the Mumbai terror attacks, the elite NSG is now procuring high-end gadgets, besides gun mountable night vision devices and SWAT assault rifles, to sharpen its heliborne commando operations.

The force is in the process of enhancing its armoury with the induction of 128 SIG (SWAT) assault rifles and night vision devices which will help its commandos execute anti-terrorist and anti-hijack operations in the dark, official sources said.

The SIG SWAT rifle, used by NATO forces, is a gas-operated weapon which is equipped with a highly tested and accurate sighting system.

"A pair of diopter and snapsight shooting assembly (microscope lens) is mounted on the receiver and calibrated for selected ranges making it easy to identify the enemy from a long distance," sources said.

The force will induct light firearms and special grenades to equip its heliborne commandos as during the Mumbai strikes the force lost one of its black cats, Havildar Gajender Singh, while he was coming down from a helicopter.

Sources said during the analysis of the Mumbai operation, it was decided to enhance the heliborne assaults of the force, especially in an urbanised condition.

^The news article is misleading. The NSG was trying to upgrade all along, but its demands were constantly turned down by the babus.

I do not understand why these newspapers always try to please the government. Tell the damned truth, that the NSG was being used as personal bodyguards of these ****** netas all along, and that is the reason they were not able to do their real job properly.

With a total strength of approximately 7500 personnel, the NSG is divided into two groups :-
1.Special Action Group (SAG)
2.Special Rangers Group (SRG).

The SAG, which comprises 54% of the force, is the elite, offensive wing with members drawn from the Indian Army. The SRG has members on deputation from central police organisations like the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF).
The primary function of the SRG is to play a supportive role to the SAF, especially in isolating target areas. SRG provides security to the VIPs coming under Z+ category. (Excluding PM, Former PM and their family. This is taken care by SPG).

I wanted to ask if in some serious situation if the current strength of the NSG falls short can they conscript additional members on short notice?

NGS is a special force. It comes into picture only in some special cases. There are numerous anti terrorist operations goes on in North East and Kashmir. Our Army and paramlitary force are well equiped to fight them. NSG is specialised in urban warfare..like what happened in Mumbai. But as there will be 4 new NSG hubs it's strength will be increased 12500. If I am not wrong it takes 9/10 months training for the personel from army and paramilitary force to be a black cat.

What we need is to supply whatever nsg needs to counter any anti indian movement ,.and we the citizen is accountable on seeing that the needs of nsg is fullifilled by the goverment .people tend to forget after few days . we have to check every month for it .

.
the move is a bit late, but NSG badly needed it. Considering that NSG is the elite force for internal security, their current firepower is far too low for an elite force

They are going abroad on term basis to train in joint excercises with German GSG's. Germans were greatly impressed with their performance in Mumbai.
