NRO beneficiaries list issued

ISLAMABAD: The government has issued the list of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries; according to the list, 8041 people took advantage of the Ordinance; of them, 7793 belong to Sindh, which is the maximum number of beneficiaries from one province, Geo News reported Saturday.

Addressing a press conference here, Law Minister Afzal Sandhu read some of the names to the media including Asif Ali Zardari, Rehman Malik, Salman Farooqi, Hussain Haqqani, A R Siddidqui, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Haji Nawaz Khokhar, Anwar Saifullah, Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Baigum Nusrat Bhutto, Jahangir Badar, Rana Nazir, Chaudhry Abdul Hameed, Tariq Anees, Sardar Maqsood Leghari, Agha Siraj Durrani, Aftab Sherpao, Mushtaq Awan and Mir Baz Khan Khetran, Usman Farooqi, Brig. Aslam Hayat and Brig Imtiaz.
Afzal Sindhu added that persons who have been benefiting from NRO’s Article-2 in Sindh includes like

Altaf Hussein, Babar Ghauri, Ishrat ul Ibad, Dr. Imran Farooq, Nouman Sehgul, Dr. Farooq Sattar, Saleem Shehzad, Kanwar Khalid Younis, and Safdar Baqari.

Altaf Hussein comes under trial for 72 cases, while 7793 people benefited from 3230 cases in Sindh.

Shahbaz Sharif’s advisor Saeed Mehdi is also among the NRO beneficiaries.

The number of cases from Sindh was 3230, of them, 7793 people were benefited, Afzal Sandhu said adding the names of politicians among the NRO beneficiaries are quite negligible.

There were two cases against the Prime Minister; however, he was acquitted in both the cases; the name of his wife is not on the list.

The State Minister for Law said the myriad corruption cases were pending since decades; only one case was decided, after which, three judges had to resign, adding several cases were politically motivated.

On a query, he said NRO was brought to the Parliament at the bidding of Supreme Court and the verdicts of the higher judiciary would be respected in future as well.

2) Nawaz Yousaf Talpur, ex-MNA and former minister, who was co-accused in URSUS tractors case;
3) Ms Nusrat Bhutto, assets case;
4) Ex-MNA and the PPP Secretary General Jehangir Badr, assets case and corruption in Sui Southern Gas Company;
5) Ex-minister for commerce and presently Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar, misuse of authority in issuing sugar export permit to non-entitled persons in 1994;
6)Ex-MNA Malik Mushtaq Ahmed Awan, embezzlement in Octroi contracts;
7) Ex-MNA Rana Nazir Ahmed, assets case and misuse of authority;
8) Ex-MPA Mian M Rashid, assets case and illegal appointments;
9) Ex-MPA Tariq Anees, assets beyond means;
10) Ex-MPA Mian Tariq Mehmood Dina, assets beyond means

We knew ppl like Zardari are fraud but reading some other names like defence minister suprise me.

Nawaz Sharif did corruption but SCoP cleared him of all charges. Can you imagine Nawaz Sharif and his family is corruption free??

1. A decision like the April 2004 decision which accepted Gen. Musharraf as the President and Parliament was called valid because any other action will destabalize the system. In other words, nazria-e-zaroorat. In this option CJP will declare all cases closed in rder to secure the system.

2. Re-open all of the cases and and dismiss majority just like it happened in the NRO for Nawaz Sharif.

3. Re-open all cases and let them remain open as long as possible.

I think CJP, Aitezaz Ahsan, Zardari and NS will go for option 1 or 2. You may have also noticed that old statements of Ishaq Dar against NS are surfacing again. This tactic will help Zaradri and Aitezaz Ahsan to keep pressure on the CJP and NS alliance.

What about those who didn't take advantage of NRO but still have cases open against them? They will also benefit from SCoP NRO.

Everyone will get something out of this mega deal except for the poor people of Pakistan

The list of some 8,000 NRO beneficiaries with the president at the top produces no major surprises. Even the average tea-boy knew this to be the case well before the announcement by the law ministry. Apart from politicians and envoys, the list names hundreds of bureaucrats and government officials. At least five sitting ministers figure on the list of ignominy. What is still more shameful is that we are informed it is unlikely that any of those currently in office will resign. Corruption is not unique to us, but the aplomb with which public figures in our country meet charges of wrongdoing sets us apart. They refuse to step down even when faced with the most compelling evidence of misdemeanour. The revelation of wilful default by the prime minister’s wife, who apparently paid back just Rs45.5 million against Rs570 million bank liabilities, would leave many leaders red-faced. Ours are obviously made of sterner stuff. However, we can expect some fallout. Pressures on the president will increase. Some legal experts have already been questioning whether he can continue to enjoy presidential immunity. But morality has little part to play in the decisions of those ruling us. Perhaps the law will, in time, take its course and public opinion matter.

While Pakistan ranks among the world’s most corrupt countries due to the deeds of its rulers, most of its citizens work tirelessly in an often futile effort to make ends meet. People everywhere are filled with disgust at the theft of state resources by those entrusted with them. This sentiment will inevitably have some impact on the government, stripping away the support it still retains. Sadly, the faith in democracy fades too as a result of the revelations we see before us. But there are other lessons too. Much of the focus has been on political corruption. The NRO list shows the most severe problem living on within the bureaucracy which, ironically, has been quick to point fingers at politicians. From the evidence we see it seems the focus is on lining personal accounts and guaranteeing cushy retirements. The rot within ministries too kills any chance of people being given good governance. Perhaps the NRO list can serve as some kind of reminder of the urgent need to save a nation that is - like a piece of decaying wood - being eaten away from the inside.

This is not the Corruption list. It is just the list of corrupt people given the exemption.

Other corrupt people were specifically excluded (like Nawaz Sharif) to get them screwed, but they ended up better. I'm sure when the NRO was being designed, all the corrupt people must've flocked onto Musharraf and declaring that they too fall under the specific criteria (between '86 to '99) and they all got themselves registered.

In that regard, most people are terming this as Musharraf Final Act (of Service). Probably he did this "good" unintentionally, but at least we now have an official list of criminals which will go down in history as such.

What compelled you to promulgate the NRO?

I very much feel responsible for answering this question which is rightly agitating many minds. However because of certain political sensitivities, I will have to pend the answer for the time being with a promise that I will take the nation on board at the appropriate time. The one clarification that I will make is that I committed this mistake on the strong advice of the political leadership at that time who are now blatantly disowning connections with it. My interest was only national with absolutely no personal bias or agenda.

NRO may have allowed Asif Zardari or corrupt politicians to contest elections but it certainly was not the cause of their coming to power. NRO is not responsible for electing the PPP as the majority party or allowing Asif Zardari to win an election. NRO is not responsible for corrupt politicians sitting in Assemblies, or being appointed as Ministers. All this happened through the votes of the people of Pakistan. NRO is not responsible for all Parliamentarians of Provincial and National Assemblies and Senate having overwhelmingly voted for Asif Zardari as President. The nation has to learn to cast their votes for the right person and the right party.

If the infamous NRO had not put forwarded by Musharraf, this ‘drama’ would have never happened in the first place.

Not all, but on the ones he was wrongly charged or without ample proof. Put the blame on the insufficiency of the proofs and on the inability of the Government agencies not on the SCoP. If you have ample proof, you can go and get any case re-open, SCoP will not stop you doing from that. So, when you are requesting for the re-opening of the cases? If you were stopped by the honourable Justices or the SCoP, than come here and cry loud, before that, you are only accusing SCoP because you have personal issues with Justice, and democracy.

Again, you are predicting as if you are Rasool Allah; Poor people will not get anything because there are still people who do not believe in the law and justice, who do not believe in democracy, and embrace military/civil dictatorships as an easy solution. It is because of these people, no institution ever got chance to get it properly established, and when institutions do not take up roots, undesirable things happen.
