Eighty state schools are allowing boys to wear skirts and girls to wear trousers under new government-funded "gender neutral" uniform policies.

The schools have either dropped references to girls and boys in their dress codes or have rewritten their uniform policy to say that pupils as young as five can dress in the uniform in which they feel most comfortable.

It is part of a government-funded drive for schools to be more sensitive to "trans" children who are questioning their gender identity.

Diversity campaigners have warned schools that current policies risk discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pupils (LGBT).

Nice (sarcasm) way to confuse / misguided young minds. What they are up to? They want huge force of confused minds about their gender. There are far better way to guide or medically to determine real person with gender identity issue. But allowing children to wear cross dress its really a pathetic approach.

I don't see the problem: let people wear what they want. Why make it a 'medical' problem? If girls are allowed to wear pants if they want, why should boys not be allowed to wear skirts if they want. Emphasis in both cases on 'if they want'. In the Netherlands, there are no school uniforms so it is not up to the schools anyway what kids wear. Kids (esp. teens) also do things that they later grow out of. That's called development. Deal with that.

This is so much like 'boys can't play with dolls and girls can't play with cars'. Reality is that if you let kids select their own toys to play with, boys will typically gravitate to cars and girls to dolls by their own choosing. However, that doesn't mean boys never want to play with dolls and girls never want to play with cars, nor does it mean they shouldn't be allowed to if they wanted to.

While in India its worn by women, in Pakistan both men & women wear Salwar Kameez.

Do you find confused men in your country ?

The scots have worn Kilts for centuries, they seem pretty clear headed.

There are dolls for men too. In fact, it's the best doll ever made and it's catered for males. They costs around thousands of dollars though

Young minds are very immature, they are just confusing them. Children should not allowed to make choices, they should be taught to make right choice.
How are you going to teach a child to make good choices, without allowing the child any choice and experiencing the consequences of making a good and a bad choices i.e. to make mistakes? Unless you want an well programmed automaton...

Yes yes, very popular in the sex industry too.

Are you going to add anything substantive, or just are you here just to be an annoyance?

My, the level of maturity surrounding this topic....

This is 80 schools out of 24 thousand, 0.3 percent. It is not a common thing. Why don't you focus on your own savage animals wreaking havoc all over France?

In UK, school uniforms are required to be fair for both genders, be available at a reasonably low cost and tolerate religious freedoms e.g. allowing Sikhs to wear turbans

DCSF guidance to schools on school uniform and related policies
http://dera.ioe.ac.uk/7044/4/uniform guidance - final2.doc

A school must have regard to its obligations under the Human Rights Act 1998 and anti-discrimination legislation.

Equality and discrimination issues:
In formulating a uniform/appearance policy, a school will need to consider its obligations not to discriminate unlawfully on the grounds of sex, race, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief. A school should also bear in mind the concept of “indirect” discrimination. This involves the application of a requirement, which, although applied equally to everyone, puts those of a particular gender, race, sexual orientation or religion or belief at a disadvantage because they cannot in practice comply with it. Such a requirement will need to be justified.
