India had insufficient evidence against Pakistan: Cable

Updated 59 minutes ago
KARACHI: US ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson, as a result of no progress on Mumbai attacks investigation, had made it clear to the Washington in 2009 that India had presented insufficient evidence against the senior leaders of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, according to a cable released by WikiLeaks on Friday.

The leak said, Anne W Patterson the then ambassador to Pakistan had in a wire to the Washington mentioned that Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other investigators had insufficient evidence for prosecution against Lashkar-e-Tayyiba’s Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah and Mazhar Iqbal Alqama.

Patterson said that FIA was forced, as a result of political pressure, to arrest and charge the three LeT leaders and that FIA was still without solid evidence to begin a formal trial.

She also told Washington that the Indian government and FBI were in hold of significant evidence against the above LeT leaders but the FBI was awaiting a green signal from New Delhi before handing it over to Pakistan.

The wire said that Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon told a foreign envoy that India had sought permission from its court for handing over the evidence to Pakistan government.

It's no surprise there's insufficient evidence given the fat Marathi kid comes from the Deccan Plains and probably has never even been into Pakistan.

(aside from some DNA evidence which has a history of fakery in India)

You forgot to add, he was a Sikh.

iT'S HIGH TIME we should accept that ... we are the problem...we have these terrorists...and they are attacking innocent in India and Pakistan.. we should give these 26/11 criminals and lunatic terrorists to India.... we have accepted already that Pakistani soil was used ... in 26/11 ... I hope Kasab would have been killed....then maybe we would not have been so insulted....

What legal qualification does Anne Patterson have that makes her judgement on the evidence provided so credible? Isnt her job simply to improve relations with Pakistan and forward Pakistani interests in the US?
Given this, It would make complete sense that she would make such a statement....

Do remember that this is the opinion of Ms. Patterson...NOT the US establishment. So this news is pretty insignificant....and not an endorsement of the Pakistani position by the US by any means!

So far, this seems like a diplomat trying to please her country of assignment by providing some lip service...nothing else.

You have proven nothing posting links to sources, still World and other Governments don't give a damn about a bunch of Hindustanis dying at the hands of "Muslim militants". Hindustan was ruled by Muslims for hundreds of years, Muslims have taken up arms against you many times, nothing new.

Now since they have nothing better to do, they are busy killing each other.

I think the deeper they dig into Headley (an America) the deeper they will reveal some things they (the govt of USA) do not want revealed to the public

perhaps it would be in their interests to ensure that assets they have do not become compromised or go rogue.....then they can allege or do the finger-pointing after that.

from Day-1 i have made my position on this mumbai drama very clear. While it was a tragedy of staggering proportions for the nameless faceless people who lost their lives -- there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. In fact, it's also quite tragic that even though this couldnt have been a better blessing for New delhi -- no action was taken to act on intelligence that had already been had. Attacks on this financial city were imminent, and even then such half-aS$ed measures were taken by hindustani authorities

and hopefuly, if my suspicions are correct, the truth would come out instead of being buried conveniently

AZ: Let us wait for the trial to complete, much will happen.

Lol. Many of you people will simply believe what you want to believe, evidence be damned!!

The fact that seasoned members have overlooked the fact that these cables were sent in early 2009 when there wasnt much evidence collected shows the prevailing mentality. Such a pity. You also tend to ignore all the evidence collected over the months following the cowardly atrocity which clearly points fingers at Pakistan based militant groups.

Believe what you want to. Its your country and your people who are getting humiliated on an almost daily basis.

First, 'Pakistan based militant groups' does not equate to Pakistani institutions.

Second, what credible evidence since 2009 has India provided, that implicated Hafiz Saeed or any Pakistani institution?

If you are so sure that 'new and credible evidence has been obtained and publicized since 2009' please list it in detail.

Did I ever say Pakistani institutions? And yet, you constantly read news implying that some lower level officials in your establishment might surely be involved in militant activities. This cancer is eating your country from within. And most of you people are willfully ignoring it.

Regarding Saeed Hafiz, why was he lodged in Indian jail? He aint a saint, and he did form the LeT, didnt he? What does that make him? TO the rest of the world,a terrorist, but to many in Pakistani establishment - a hero for his anti-India rhetoric, a mindset which is going to prove very damaging.

And there are reams written about how LeT and some handlers directed the entire episode. Why, now US is starting to point fingers at people in your establishment for complicity in hiding OBL in Pakistan, right under the very nose of an esteemed military academy!!

But no one is directly pointing fingers at Pakistani Institutions.
