Calling this old missile "pretty advanced" is a far cry from itz actual capability. First of all,it is a direct copy of Soviet R-27SLBM.Mere presence of grid fins doesnt guarantee a superior performance. An external control/stabilization surface does create a finite amount of drag vis-a-vis a design that doesnt employ any external control surfaces. The only advantage a grid fin has(in case it is being used as a control surface) is that it has a significantly smaller mean chord length and hence it exerts a lesser torque. The amount of torque required to move any external control surface against mass of flowing air is known as hinge torque. Now since the MAC is smaller the hinge torque is also small.This results in smaller actuators that can actuate the grid fins.
I would also like to point out that grid fin's performance is superior to the normal surfaces only in supersonic regime and not in sub-sonic regime.In fact it's performance is inferior to normal fins in transonic regime.
Secondly the missile still uses legacy liquid engines! which means it'd take hours for filling the main tanks.
Modern ICBMs use No external control/stabilization surfaces. The trend is to use flex nozzles using servo-mechanism.However the flex nozzle should be very very sensitive to external disturbances as well.Because now,since there aint any external stabilization surfaces,hence it will have to work as both stabilization and control.
