N Korea 'places missile on pad'
North Korea has placed what is thought to be a long-range missile on a launch pad, Japanese and US officials say.

North Korea had already said it would send a satellite into orbit in early April, using a long-range missile.

The US, Japan and South Korea are concerned Pyongyang will test its Taepodong-2 long-range missile instead of launching a satellite.

Japanese PM Taro Aso said plans were being made to shoot down any rocket that threatens to hit the country.

North Korea has said it plans to carry out the controversial launch between 4 and 8 April.

The Taepodong 2 missile is capable of reaching Alaska from the Musudan-ri base in Hwadae on North Korea's north-east coast.

It first tested the missile in July 2006, but it failed less than a minute after launch.

Pyongyang warning

Japan has suggested it could deploy a vessel equipped with missile interceptor technology to the Sea of Japan (East Sea) to shoot the rocket down.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Aso said Japan's security council will meet this week to make preparations to shoot the missile down if it threatens to land on Japan.

Also on Wednesday, South Korea's chief negotiator to six-nation talks on ending North Korea's nuclear programme , Wi Sung-lac, said a launch would trigger "countermeasures", without saying what those might be.

A satellite launch and a long-rang missile test would both use the Taepodong 2, analysts say.

Pyongyang has already said the rocket taking its satellite into orbit will cross over Japan, dropping booster stages to its east and west.

North Korea has warned the US, South Korea and Japan not to interfere with its launch.

On Tuesday, Pyongyang said any UN sanctions imposed for the launch would mean the end of the six-nation talks.

Report: North Korea Prepares to Move Long-Range Missile to Launch Pad
Wednesday, March 25, 2009

ADVERTISEMENTNorth Korea is expected to move its highly controversial Taepodong-2 missile to the launch pad this weekend in anticipation of an early April firing, U.S. officials have reported.

U.S. counterproliferation and intelligence officials have confirmed Japanese news reports of the expected launch between April 4 and 8.

North Korea announced its intention to launch the satellite in February, however, regional powers worry the claim is a cover for the launch of a long-range missile capable of reaching Alaska.

"It is highly likely that the rocket will emerge between March 28 and 31," AFP quotes a South Korean military source, adding it will take more time to add fuel. The source also said South Korea would start a crisis management operation as soon as the rocket is set up.

North Korea faked a satellite launch in 1998 to cloak a missile development test. In 2006, it launched a Taepodong-2 that blew up less than a minute into flight.

Both the satellite launch rocket and long-range missile use similar technology, and arms control experts fear even a satellite launch would be a test toward eventually launching a long-range missile.

South Korea, the U.S. and Japan have urged North Korea to refrain from launching a satellite or missile, calling it a violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution barring the country from ballistic activity and Tokyo media reports say Japan's military may shoot down the rocket if it threatens the country.

South Korea's chief nuclear envoy, Wi Sung-lac, said Wednesday after returning from talks with his Beijing counterparts, that a launch would trigger a response.

"If North Korea launches rocket, certain countermeasures are unavoidable," he said. He refused to elaborate, saying the measures, including any sanctions, would be discussed among U.N. Security Council member nations.

North Korea insists it bears the right to develop its space program and on Tuesday warned the U.S., Japan and its allies not to interfere with the launch.

A 2006 U.N. Security Council resolution prohibits North Korea from engaging in ballistic activity, which Washington and its allies say includes firing a long-range missile or using a rocket to send a satellite into space.

The North warned that any sanctions would violate the spirit of the disarmament-for-aid pact Pyongyang signed in 2007 with five other nations: the U.S., South Korea, China, Japan and Russia.

It probably won't be clear if the latest launch is a satellite or a missile test until footage can be analyzed after the event; the trajectory of a missile is markedly different from that of a satellite.

Analysts have been watching for signs of a satellite or missile on the launch pad in Musudan-ni, the northeast coastal launch site. Satellite imagery from March 16 showed progress toward mounting a rocket, with a crane hovering over the launch pad, said Christian LeMiere, an editor at Jane's Intelligence Review in London.

He said that once mounted, scientists would need at least a week to fuel and carry out tests before any launch. Images from earlier this month did not indicate the rocket or missile had been mounted, he said Wednesday.

The Associated Press and AFP contributed to this report.

see all i am saying is this subject is related to the present tug of war between Russia-China-the U.S & Europe in this 21st century China & the europian union ( though in a ecnomical hard spot) has clearly out smarted the U.S. Russia has also done a good job countries like north korea , Iran,India,Pakistan,South Korea,Japan,BD,Burma comes in their strategies while the gulf, central asia & the Pacific's are contended see these powers to be (Russia-China-the U.S & Europe) are not india-pak or libya/egypt with respect so their proxies are even not confined to any single spot they are not World players like that
hope this helps

.
Are we watching Pakistan China India Russia Iran North Korea coming under same flag. I mean are there any chances that organization like that of Nato is going to be formed in Asia ?
I hope so coz people are tired with this Pak-India tussel and American interference in Internal matters

Clinton Says North Korea Missile Launch Would Have Consequences

Gollust report - Listen (MP3)

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Mexico City, 25 Mar 2009
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the long-range missile launch North Korea is apparently preparing for would be a provocative act that would have consequences for Pyongyang. Clinton spoke in Mexico City amid reports North Korea has moved multi-stage missile to a launch pad.

U.S. officials have warned North Korea against going ahead with what it says will be the launch of an experimental space satellite early next month.

Clinton's remarks, at a news conference here with Mexican Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa, were the most explicit on the subject to date by the Obama administration.

U.S. officials say the self-described satellite launch would only be a cover for a test of a long-range missile, perhaps a more advanced version of the one North Korea fired eastward over Japan in 1998.

Clinton said a North Korean missile launch, for any purpose, would be a provocative act and a violation of U.N. Security Council resolution 1718 - approved after its 2006 nuclear test-demanding an end to Pyonyang's nuclear weapon and missile programs.

"We have made it very clear that the North Koreans pursue this pathway at a cost, and with consequences to the six-party [nuclear] talks, which we would like to see revived and moving forward as quickly as possible," said Hillary Clinton. "And we intend to raise this violation of the Security Council resolution, if it goes forward, in the U.N., and coincidentally Mexico will be chairing the Security Council starting in April."

Clinton was not specific about diplomatic action that might be taken in the event of a launch, other than to say it would not go unnoticed and would have consequences.

North Korea has said punitive U.N. action would bring about the collapse of the Chinese-sponsored six-party talks, in which North Korea agreed in principle two year ago to scrap its nuclear program in return for energy aid and diplomatic benefits.

North Korea has shut-down and partly dismantled its nuclear reactor complex under terms of the accord. But negotiations have been stalled for months over Pyongyang's refusal to accept a verification program for the declaration of its nuclear holdings and activities it made last June.

The Obama administration in February named retired senior diplomat Stephen Bosworth as a special envoy for North Korea, with the aim of reviving the nuclear talks. But on his only mission to the region, earlier this month, he did not get an invitation to visit Pyongyang.
