North Korea torpedoed South's navy ship: report

Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:48am EDT

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's military believes a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine sank its navy ship last month, based on intelligence gathered jointly with the United States, a news report said on Thursday.

The Yonhap news report appears to be the clearest sign yet that Seoul blames Pyongyang for what would be one of the deadliest incidents between the rivals since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. It puts more political pressure on President Lee Myung-bak, but analysts do not see it triggering a war.

The military's intelligence arm sent the report of "certain" North Korean involvement to the presidential Blue House soon after the incident, Yonhap quoted a high-ranking military source as saying.

Lee's government has come under criticism for what many see as its overly cautious handling of possible links to North Korea. It has called for a thorough investigation of the sinking, thought to have killed 46 sailors.

Market players have been calmed by the South's measured response, seeing Seoul as unlikely to take aggressive moves that would escalate into armed conflict and harm the export-driven economies of North Asia, responsible for about one-sixth of the global economy.

South Korea's defense ministry had no comment on the report.

"North Korean submarines are all armed with heavy torpedoes with 200 kg (441 lb) warheads," the military source was quoted as saying by Yonhap. "It is the military intelligence's assessment that the North attacked with a heavy torpedo.

"The military intelligence has made the report to the Blue House and to the Defense Ministry immediately after the sinking of the Cheonan that it is clearly the work of North Korea's military," the source was quoted as saying.

South Korea plans to soon raise the front half of the 1,200-tonne Cheonan, which went down near a disputed sea border with North Korea, and will issue its verdict on the cause of the explosion that sank the warship after that.

Analysts said there is little South Korea can do even if Pyongyang is found to be the culprit, because a military response was likely to hurt its own quickly recovering economy and bolster North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's standing at home.

Lee ended a decade of no-questions-asked aid to the destitute North and called for a hardline push for Pyongyang to disarm.

"The nuclear issue has still not been resolved. This and the Cheonan incident all serve to inflict a negative impact on the Lee administration," said Lee Nam-young, a political analyst at the Sejong University in Seoul.

The reclusive North has denied it had anything to do with the sinking near the disputed sea border off the west coast that has been the scene of two deadly naval battles in the past decade.

It accused Lee of using the incident for political gains ahead of crucial local elections in June.

South Korea has few economic options left to hurt the North. It has already suspended its unconditional handouts that once were worth more than $1 billion to the North, which has an estimated yearly GDP of $17 billion.

The greatest risk to the region is a brief armed conflict where North Korea fires tens of thousands of artillery shells into the Seoul area, home to about half of the South's 49 million people, and fires its hundreds of missiles at major cites in the South and Japan.

Yonhap said the South Korean and U.S. military suspected the North was stepping up drills to infiltrate a submarine south of the naval border, hidden among Chinese fishing boats, and wage a surprise attack against the South.

Lee can't do anything because he does not have command over the south korean military, the US does.

But he did make a threat to attack unarmed chinese fishing boats in an attempt to beat nonexistent north korean subs. If such an attack occurs, who knows what the barbarians up north with tactical nukes do? and who knows how we'll respond...

.
Some serious :taz: going on there.
But it is quite obvious that South Korean wont leave its mum. North Korea will go for far more crazy and deadly 'signals'. But the South won't fight. They will be kept under constant terror by US which shows them the doomsday video of what would happen if they take some action. The results of many such videos shown by the US and many techs given by China to NK is what we see today. North Korea has nuclear weapons. South Korea has rich targets.
Unless the South becomes assertive and does an Israel there is no way out especially when there are USA and China are to make sure the Koreas are there as they are now.
I don't understand how USA convinces South Korea to stay like this. Is it just that 'They will bomb you if you won't keep quiet?'. I don't understan how their people stay quiet even after incidents like this.
IMO South Korea should start going after self respect and long lasting security now that they have prosperity. How long are they willing to be blackmailed?
Can some body help me get a better picture of things here? The chronology of events and the recent turns if any? How different countries go about the Koreas?

Respond as in take action against ROK?

attacks on chinese citizens by the armed forces of another nation in chinese territory are acts of war, after all. north korea and china are real allies, with an actual treaty saying so.

if the south pulls off an "israel vs. syria" on north korea then who knows if china doesn't pull off a "us vs. iraq" on south korea? the south korean air force is extremely weak:

As of 2008, the South Korean Air Force flew more than 180 KF-16, 174 F-5E/F, 130 F-4D/E, 39 F-15K.

Most of their planes are 1960's era planes that were proven weak by their record in Vietnam. 700 F-4's were lost there when flown by US pilots, what do you think Korean pilots will do? F-15K is a GROUND ATTACK plane like the F-15E. They do not have any AEWAC planes, making their air force exactly like the Iraqi Air Force in composition.

But since our air force is not as strong as the US one, there may also have to be a corresponding ground offensive with the help of north korea, attacking from the west and north.

keep in peace and respect to each other yes but china is more stronger on ground than any other country and USA is superior in air but not that much if it war between korea morth and south then bye bye for both koreans and USA forces in the region so US want its forces in the region and thus making shut the South koreans mouth

.
Thanks. That helps me understand ROK acts like USA's bi*ch.
What brought DPRK and China close? What are their common interests and what is the conflict between ROK and China for China to side with DPRK?

N.Korea is a fanatic personified into a nation.

South should avoid war at all costs and eventually Korea might be reunified peacefully. Meanwhile the North keeps running out of resources while South keeps getting more modernized and resourceful.

Presently the GDP gap is 1:25

If deliberately blowing up and sinking your neighbour's naval ship using a heavy torpedo is not an act of war, I wonder what is?

This is an act of war, but this is not likely to "trigger a war".

For example, the French president calling up Sarah Palin and telling her how hot fabulous she is; is different from the French president getting into bed with her.

N.Korea does not have much to lose in war compared to the South.

North Koreans seem to have got a boost after their reported nuclear weapons test. Perhaps their crazy leader is itching to try out the new missiles that are tested.

Torpedoing a neighbouring country's ship that too a military one is certainly the cue to start a conflict in the region. Wonder what Kim Jong Il is thinking by taking such aggressive steps?

You wish...

If NKR called upon the PRC and China respond, it will be a slaughter for BOTH the PLAAF and its NKR bi7ch when the US enter the fight. China will not risk losing, physically and image wise, in Asia by going against the US. Chinese 'face' is more important a few NKRean troops. That leave the potential of a fight between the two Koreas and from my experience with the ROK Marines and the South Korean Air Force in Osan and Kunsan. The NKRean Air Force is already screwed.

Technically North and South Korea are at war. There was only a armistice, not ceasefire at the end of the Korean war

I agree, I have worked with ROK forces. They are a highly trained very professional force. They also have some of the best weapon systems available. If full hostilities happen North Korea would be in for a big surprise. Not saying North Korea couldn't do a lot of damage. but they would lose in the end. And if they used a nuke they would definitely bring about their demise.

Wise up. In international affairs, everyone, no matter how powerful, is either the pimp, the prostitute or the customer at one time or another.

Practically nothing worth a discussion.
